In the early 1900s there were two Methodist Episcopal churches in Rogers. First M.E., North, was located on the northwest corner of Second and Chestnut. Central M.E., South, was located on the northwest corner of Third and Elm. The north and south designations didn’t reflect the churches’ geographic locations in the city, although that was certainly the case. Instead they represented a denominational split that occurred in the church in the mid 1840s over the issue of slavery. By the turn of the 20th century there weren’t any major doctrinal differences between the two.
But the churches didn’t just share similar names or doctrines, they shared similar facades thanks to A.O. Clarke, a prominent local architect. (

The United Church of Montague (Later Trinity United Church)
The little white church at the top of the hill on the South Side of Montague was built in 1876. It was built on land donated by Dr. Robertson, who had offered the site tot he first Protestant demonination who would erect a church. The Presbyterians took advantage of this offer and they built the church at a cost of $1400.00. The builder was Alexander MacVarlane. The wooden structure was built with a spire but without the east wing. (Other additions were to be made at a later date.) The church had its opening service on September 24th, 1876 with Rev. Isaac Murrary D.D., minister of the Free Church in Charlottetown, and Rev. John MacLeod of Zion Presbyterian Church, also in Charlottetown, taking part in dedicating the church. At this time, there was a large shed built at the rear of the church to accommodate the horses and wagons and for storage of coal for heating. Coal oil lamps were in use until electricity was available in the region. Plumbing and running water, were non-existent until much later (in the early 1950's). When it was decided in 1925 to join the Methodists to become the United Church of Montague, those of the Presbyterian Congregation who did not wish to join, moved into the Methodist Church on the other side of Montague. At this time, the Minister Rev. John Sterling continued on and remained head of the Montague United Charge until 1931. There was much sorrow during the union of the Methodist and Presbyterians and some families were split by the change. Even to this day, some of these wounds have not been healed among the oldest generation.

In the summer of 1904 Rev. Bramfton, an Adventist minister, held services in Mt. Vernon followed by Rev. Black, a Baptist, from Burns, Oregon. Rev. Black held services every three months. In 1905 two ministers of "The Church of God" held a week of services followed by Rev. Peak who preached regularly every two weeks in the community hall until what is now known as the Mt. Vernon Community Presbyterian Church which was built in 1909. This church is on main street and on the bank of Beech Creek which runs through town and is usually a quiet little stream coming in from the north and joining the John Day river southwest of town. the river runs through the southern part of town.
The cost of the church building was $800.00. All being free of debt as the land was donated by Mr. and Mrs. McClellan Stockdale. The neighborhood elected trustees. Some of the first ministers holding services in this building was Rev. Peak who in 1910 secured the services of Rev. George Coopinder, a traveling evangelist. Together they held two weeks of meeting which resulted in twenty converts and seven baptisms. The first Presbyterian man to visit the field was Rev. J. V. Millegan D.D., State Superintendent of Sunday School work in the spring of 1910, followed by a Theological Seminary student, Mr. Bernard Brasscamp who spent the 941mer of 1910 at the Murray ranch in Dayville holding services in that community also. In later years Mr. Brasscamp became an ordained minister and served fifteen years as Alin of the House of Representatives at Washington, D. C. He was still there at the time of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's death.

Next Our Local Church History Over all, thirty pastors have served the Presbyterian Church. The most recent, Rev. Darin Bentzinger, makes thirty one. Two former pastors, Reverend Tinkham and Reverend Nelson, came from Ireland. The others came from all over the country. Youth Groups This church has a rich history of active youth ministry and activity. Each summer, youths are able to attend summer camp at Westminster Woods, South of Lexington, NE. In the past two years, we have had youth take part in the Westminster Woods Mission trip (last year they went to Southern Colorado) and in the Sports Camp (directed by Rev. Bentzinger). During the school months, the youth from the Presbyterian and United Methodist Churches combine to form the United Youth Fellowship. Together they meet twice a month for study and fun. Each year they try to do at least one fund raiser, a community service activity, and either a mission or ski trip. This group numbers approximately 20-25 youth. They also handle the Easter Sunrise Service each year. This year (1998) we will be sending three youth to the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, an event sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA) where 6,000+ Presbyterian youth meet at Purdue University for a week of learning and fun.

He returned to describe what he found there was worship everywhere, but none at Okanase. They drew up a sketch. Heavy spruce timber was cut from the land at Clear Lake, floated down to Alex Kippen's mill, sawn, and hauled to the building site. Sam Havelin, a stonemason, did the foundation. Women prepared meals on the spot. Chief George Bone, Solomon and David Burns, Bill Bone, Joe Boyer and younger men did the work. They got $300 from Toronto for flooring and siding. All funds for other material was raised and contributed by the Okanase people. In 1911, the Christmas Tree Concert was held in the new church. George Bone put up his horse as security to buy the embossed steel for the walls and ceiling, but he lost the horse when the loan was not paid. The
