THE HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE ISLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 1766 - 1970 by Thomas R. Bayles The first settlement in Brookhaven Town was made at Setauket in 1655, and a church was built there in 1671 which for a great many years was the only church in the town. About 1740 a church was built at South Haven, and in 1766 the first church in Middle Island was erected under the leadership of Rev. David Pose, pastor of tile South Haven church. This was located on a piece of ground four rods by five rods at the corner of Church Lane and the Middle Country Road, which was purchased from Selah Brown for sixteen shillings. That first "meeting house" was a plain box like structure about 26 feet square. Logs from the nearby forests were hauled to the sawmill at Yaphank to be sawed into boards and timbers, and labor was furnished by the men of the church. No heating facilities were provided, and the women brought "foot stoves" to warm their feet. The church was organized in the fall of 1767 by the Presbytery of Long Island as the "First Presbyterian Church of Middletown, as this section was known in those days. It was not until about 1829 that the name of Middle Island was adopted. Rev. David Rose, who was pastor of this church and the one at South Haven was born at Branford Conn., on December 11, 1736. He prepared himself to be a doctor and graduated from Yale in 1760. He decided to turn to the ministry, and studied theology under Dr. Samuel Buell, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Easthampton.

History of St. George United Church
Early History
Methodism was first on the scene in 1831 followed by Presbyterianism the next year and finally in 1925 Union was achieved and the St. George United Church has been active ever since. In those very early days when Methodism held sway, residents settlers if you will around the Village of St. George were eager for religious experience and spiritual guidance. So it was that in 1831, a circuit rider rode through bush country along a trail only a horse could follow, called on a few settlers, asked them to meet for a church service at Tykerts Schoolhouse, about a mile northeast of St. George, and the first Methodist services commenced in the district. A frame church was erected at the site of what is now the United Church Cemetery in about 1840. In 1867 with Rev. James Harris as pastor, the first organ was placed in the church. In 1869 the foundation stone of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, on Main Street, was laid and 10 years later came dedication of a new stone and white brick church. The circuit rider mentioned earlier was Rev. G. Ferguson and his field of labour extended into the County of Waterloo. The St. George Circuit included St. George, Sheffield, Branchton, Tranquliity, Germans, Steel's, West's, and Harrisburg. Between 1867 and 1925, revival meetings and Camp meetings characterized early Canadian Methodism and, as far as the church itself was concerned, it seated 400, the men and women sitting on opposite sides of the sanctuary. Following Rev. James Harris there were a number of preachers with some conducting Union Evangelistic services around 1900.

Raymond Presbyterian Church
The first Presbyterian Church was organized April 30, 1880 and was called Little Salt Church because it stood near the Little Salt Creek three miles east of Raymond. Neither the town of Raymond nor the railroad were in existence at that time. Two years later on October 22, 1882, the congregation erected a new building in Raymond with the total cost of building and furnishings amounting to $2,000. After an urgent plea from the Rev. E.M. Lewis, the congregation provided the balance and church was dedicated and presented, debt free, to the Almighty God. The building was located on out Lot No. 1, which is now known as 2nd and High Streets. Later, the congregation bought three lots and moved the building to the location now known as 3rd and Clark Street. When the building was moved it was enlarged and improved, the cornerstone being laid November 9, 1907. The church was dedicated, free from debt, September 20, 1908. Twenty-four years after the founding of the church, a fine two-story seven room manse was built. It was finished in April, 1904, and, has always had the policy of the congregation to use the pay-as-you-go plan. The manse was also debt free. In October, 1922, work was begun to rebuild the foundation, enlarge the basement and add an annex to the west side of the church. Art glass windows were also attached. Since all the labor on this improvement was donated by members and friends, the congregation saved approximately $1,600. The project was completed by the spring of 1923.

Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church was formed in 1966 by the merger of the Fullerton and Christ Presbyterian Churches. The Fullerton Church was itself the result of a merger in 1932 of the Covenant and Fullerton Avenue Presbyterian Churches. The roots of these predecessor churches date back as early as 1843 as shown in our family tree below. Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church inhabits the building that was originally the second home of the Fullerton Avenue Presbyterian Church. This building was erected in 1888 using Michigan buff sandstone and contains red oak pews, a historic and unusual stained glass (some of which is featured on the secondary pages of this web site).
The following section provides highlights of the history of Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church from the time of its formation in the merger of 1966. Other sections follow which give brief summaries of the histories of the predecessor churches and sabbath schools.

Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church
Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church is officially formed on October 11 when the Presbytery of Chicago approves the merger of the Christ and Fullerton Presbyterian Churches. Rev. Eldon Lindberg, pastor of the Fullerton Presbyterian Church, continues as pastor at Lincoln Park. The Fullerton Church building becomes the new home of the Lincoln Park congregation.

http://www.tisd.net/~preach/History.htm
One of the first pioneers of the Presbyterian faith in Texas was the Reverend W.C. Blair who was sent in 1838 by the Synod of Mississippi as a teacher and foreign missionary to the frontier. He and his family built a house and school in Victoria in 1839. In that house the First Presbyterian Church of Victoria was organized on October 2, 1841, by eight charter members: James Norman Smith (ruling elder), Mrs. Smith, John Gray, Mary Keith, F. Leiter, Mrs. Chenault, and Susan M. Blair.
The first building was constructed on "Presbyterian Church Square," the Ecclesiastical Square on the east of Constitutional Square (now DeLeon Plaza), by petition of the church trustees to the city officials who granted the request of the church as long as they would build a "descent house" on it within thirty months. This church was a frame building 39' by 52' without a roof or floor. It remained that way until the Reverend Daniel Baker came and gave a series of evangelical sermons and the Reverend was able to raise more funds. Then the building was finished.
The growth of the church was assisted when the Texas Legislature passed an act authorizing the trustees of the church to sell all or part of the church square as long as the proceeds were applied to building a church and improving the church grounds. The lots formed by this subdivision were sold, and the proceeds were used to build the church and manse at Forrest and Liberty. The white frame sanctuary built there was occupied October 23, 1873. It is interesting to note that no pastor served the congregation continuously until April 5, 1874 when an official call was accepted. The building was declared free of debt and dedicated to worship on October 8, 1876. The list of officers of the church shows only elders serving until 1874. At that time, the church elected and ordained men to serve as deacons to the congregation. These officers and the minister led the work and worship of the congregation.

Introduction The First United Presbyterian Church collection (1861-1978) contains minutes, membership roll books, treasurer's records, annual reports, and United Presbyterian Women's record books. The collection was loaned to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University for microfilming in March 1978 as a result of the Wood County Historical Church Records Survey. The collection is contained on two rolls of microfilm. The manuscript register was compiled by Mark Barnes in March 1980.
Agency History On July 19, 1861, seventeen members of Plain Congregational Church were dismissed to organize a Presbyterian Church in Tontogany, with the Rev. Perry C. Baldwin serving as first minister. The church was governed until 1959 by two boards: the session, comprised of elders having charge of the spiritual life of the church, and the trustees, having charge of the church property. In 1959, a unicameral system was adopted, consisting of one board of twelve elders, with committees being appointed to implement policies. The original church building, erected in 1861, as been remodeled many times over the years. The latest addition, an education unit, was built in 1961.
