Salvation Army The following has been taken from the booklet called SHAUNAVON Town and Community published in Saskatchewan's Golden Jubilee Year 1955 The opening of the Shaunavon District for settlement in 1907 to 1908 brought people of many faiths to this prairie area. One of their first tasks was to organize their churches. Today there are many congregations in Shaunavon, giving opportunity for freedom of worship. There were many hardships in forming these churches but through the passing years they have grown in God's Strength. The History of the Anglican Church On Good Friday, 1914, the first Anglican service to be held in Shaunavon took place at the Princess motion picture theatre with the Rev. A.E. Burgett, later Bishop of Edmonton officiating. A week later, on April 19, the Rev. T.J. Davies took first service in the town. He was the first Vicar of Shaunavon. In the fall of 1915 the All Saints' Anglican Church was built, an the first service was held on Christmas Day. Earlier, a two-room vicarage had been built where the Parish Hall is now. This is part of the present vicarage which was built in 1917. The Parish Hall was constructed in 1924.

The Stamford Historical Society
The Stamford Ladies Soldiers' Aid Society The Stamford Ladies Soldiers' Aid Society In Stamford, the Stamford Ladies Soldiers' Aid Society was formed, bringing together women from several churches. As an auxiliary to the Sanitary Commission , the Society collected money and food, bought and made useful articles to alleviate the soldiers' suffering. Twenty percent of the women in Stamford joined the Society. Many other church women, not formal members, knitted, sewed, and baked for the boxes and baskets that were sent to men in hospital at David's Island, off New Rochelle.

Formed in July 1861, the ladies organized a fund-raiser in August, a Promenade Concert. Mrs. Truman Smith, president of the Society, arranged for shipments of goods to the David's Island hospital, and for visits of members of the Society to the Island. Few names of other members are available. A Mrs. Hoyt, Miss Aiken and Mrs. Baldwin are mentioned. Women of the Baptist, Congregational, Episcopal, and Presbyterian churches were involved in these efforts. When the ladies found their contributions were not always safely delivered, they organized their own deliveries and hand-carried baskets of food and boxes of clothing, apparently by boat down Long Island Sound. When visiting on the Island, the women wrote letters, made note of problems with wages and mail, read aloud to the patients, and did whatever they could to be helpful.

1925- AND CHURCH UNION
The congregation of the Squamish Presbyterian Church realized that a Union of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches in Canada was fast becoming a possibility, after more than thirty years of discussions. On June 10th, 1925 a majority of the three churches united to form the United Church of Canada, and on August 23rd, 1927 the Squamish Presbyterian Church decided to become the Squamish United Church. As yet, there was no resident minister; theological students still served the congregation, and a minister from Lillooet came to Squamish occasionally to hold a Sunday Service. Finally, in May of 1929, the Rev. Evan Baker was posted to Squamish, serving our church for one year. He was succeeded by the Rev. J.G. Gibson who, with his wife, ministered to the Squamish United Church from 1930 to 1942, broken only by a nine month period holiday in Europe in 1933. Rev. Gibson's long ministry gave the congregation a much needed feeling of solidarity and permanence.
BUILDING THE MANSE
With a resident minister and his family firmly settled in Squamish, permanent living quarters were needed within easy reach of the church. In 1930, the Ladies Aid under the presidency of Mrs. D.D. Morrison bravely undertook the task of providing a manse; Mrs. Morrison retained that post until 1939, when the mortgage on the manse was finally burned.

Sunday School Picnic, 1934 style! With the Anglicans firmly settled into their own church building, the Presbyterian Church of Canada took the remaining Protestants of the Squamish Valley under its wing. Mr. Matheson, a Theology student from Queen's College, Kingston, Ontario, was appointed to serve Squamish, or Newport as it was then known, for the summer months. Services were held in the school building, a two room wooden framed building which had been constructed on the west side of Third Street, almost directly across the lane behind the present Christian Education Centre. In 1914, Mr. Matheson was replaced by another student from Queen's, a Mr. Corkill, who served the Squamish community until he enlisted in the First World War. During the next few years, services were taken by Mr. Robert Young, a lay member of the Presbyterian Church, and by Mr. William Mashiter, a lay member of the Anglican Church. A number of students from Westminster Hall, the Presbyterian Theological College in Vancouver, also travelled to Squamish to hold Sunday Services. Among these travelling ministers-in-training were J.C. Goodfellow, J.L. Clerihue, D. Donaldson, A.C. Smith and H.M. Rae. The first Sunday School in Squamish itself was started by Robert Young. He served as Superintendent, assisted by Mr. William McNeil. This Sunday School also included the Anglican children until 1927, when aa second Sunday School was started in the Anglican church. When the new Mashiter School was opened, the Presbyterians continued to hold services in the unused school building 1919, when Dr. N.J. Paul returned from overseas and purchased the structure for his home. During the next two years, services moved to the Rex Theatre, now the Howe Sound Business Centre.

Scope and Content Note
The Records of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale consist of materials relating to the establishment and growth of the church and the development of the city of Carbondale. The records date from the 1850s to the 1970s. A history of the church’s early years, contained in the collection, was written by Daniel Harmon Brush, a founder of Carbondale and a founding member of the church. The collection is divided into three sections: Historical Materials, which document church history and Carbondale city development; Business Materials, which are financial records documenting primarily construction of the Carbondale Presbyterian churches; and the Women’s Association History, which contains material on various church women’s groups such as the Ladies Aid Society and the Missionary Society. The Historical Materials section contains church histories, records of church groups, church newsletters, materials documenting relations with national and state Presbyterian synods, dismissions and transfer certificates of members, lists of ministers, missionaries, and subscribers to the church, cornerstone contents, and centennial celebration plans. The Business Materials series contains the financial records of the church such as accounts, treasurer’s reports, mortgages, bonds, vouchers, loans and invoices. Well-documented in this section are the plans for, the construction of, and the invoices of transactions for erecting the new church in 1905-06.

Patchwork Lives
Believing
For many women their church provided a bedrock foundation of faith that they could turn to in good times and bad. Their strong beliefs and a sense of belonging to the church were often expressed in the themes they chose for their quilts. The vast majority of women were from a Judeo-Christian background and their quilts reflect that faith. "It seems to me we can never enough praise our Father for leading us to this part of the west, where we have so many congenial Christian friends with whom we can enjoy such sweet communion."

Often women expressed religious beliefs in their quilts, choosing patterns whose names included biblical references like Jacob's Ladder, which refers to a passage in Genesis. A multitude of fabrics and patterns are used in this quilt's construction, evidence of the wide availability of fabrics in the last decades of the nineteenth century, as textile production became easier and less expensive.

The United Church Women's Participation in Helping to Build St. Paul's United Church Trinity Methodist Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church were both established in Estevan about the same time 1892. Being no church to go to, services were first held in homes and then in the original part of the stone school, called Central School. (This school was where the Post Office is now) During 1902 and 03 the two church buildings were erected, on opposite sides of 3rd and 12th Ave. The women immediately became very involved and formed the Ladies' Aid. Mrs. John Gallaway was the first president of the Methodist Ladies' Aid and Mrs. L. A. Duncan of the Presbyterian. The duties of the Ladies' Aid were as numerous as they are today. No doubt the raising of money for the building of the church and the current expenses the main objective. The manse was built in 1915 by the Methodist Congregation and the furnishing of the manse became the responsibility of the Ladies' Aid. This was added to the work of the women. In both churches, during the years that followed, a worthy succession of Ministers came and went. The congregation knew days of encouragement and seasons of difficulty but, by and large, the story of those days in one of growth in numbers and in influence. Through the dark days of World War I the records show many from these congregations serving in the armed forces. When the war was over plans were carried out to welcome the men home. The memory of those who did not return was honored in the beautiful stained glass window in the south of the sanctuary of the present church, unveiled and dedicated in 1925.

A History Ever Unfolding
The church thrives today, due to the vision, dedication, and hard work of many 19th and 20th century men, women, and children.
The Early Years: 1839-1889
On February 6, 1839, seven founding members gathered at the home of Christopher Walkup. They named their congregation the Presbyterian Church of Virginia, McHenry County, Illinois, because the earliest settlers in the area were from Western Virginia. The first minister was Rev. Lemul Hall. He lived in Geneva, Wisconsin (about twenty miles north) and rode out to the new congregation bi-weekly. A late nineteenth century church historian wrote this about the first church members: "The settler from the East, with his energy, enterprise, and economical habits, and the settler from the South with his kind, open-hearted, hospitality, exerted the one upon the other an influence that was mutually beneficial." Around 1847 a 30'X36' church was built near Mr. Walkup's house. Soon thereafter, a good brick school house was erected nearby. In 1872, the people of Ridgefield began to feel the need of a new and more suitable house of worship. This new church was 36'X56', cost $6,000, and is the same sanctuary that is seen today. When the church was finished in 1874, a parsonage was constructed costing $2,500.

In October 1855 six years before Lincoln became president in 1861, services began in the Santa Rosa Court House that would result in the organization of the church (1856) we now know as First Presbyterian Church, Santa Rosa according to the record of Presbytery of the Redwoods. Reverend James Woods was the Pastor. Rev. James Woods was one of the renowned pioneer Presbyterians of the Pacific Slope. Rev. Woods once wrote in his journal...
"the best Sunday School I ever saw in any city or county, chapel or cathedral was held from Sabbath to Sabbath in this courtroom. The superintendent was John Treadway, an elder in my church. The county was new then, a great many ranches were occupied by bachelors, so of course children were scarce compared to what they are now, even in towns of the same size. But that courthouse was packed and crowded with children, some of whom came from ten miles every Sabbath." In 1878 the Woman’s Home and Foreign Missionary Society was founded in 1878. Its Constitution read “Article 111 - the object of this society shall be the cultivation of a missionary spirit by prayer for the success of missions, increased knowledge regarding mission fields. and the collection of money for mission purposes”. Later, in 1888, the Ladies Aid Society found their ministry in raising funds to supply Sunday School materials, carpeting, and dishes, for all the basic needs of the church. In 1934 the two societies realizing in “union there is strength consolidated under the title of Women’s Association, with all the women of the church considered members.
