LADIES AID LADIES AID REPORT The Ladies Aid Society meets in the St. Paul’s Court common room on the third Thursday of each month at 2p.m. We are a small group and would like to welcome some new members. We enjoy our meetings with a time of worship and fellowship. Our purpose is to help out with monies to the Church. We also send donations to the Canadian Bible Society, Christian Blind Mission, Caring Cupboard, St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, and wherever needed. We also have some shut-in members in Nursing homes who we visit and remember at Christmas time with a small gift. Our President Mary, very graciously invites us to her home, for our June meeting. This is very much enjoyed by all. We save pennies through the year, and have a "Bring and Buy sale" in November. This is a fun time, and makes a few extra dollars. We are looking forward to some new members in the new year. Dorothy. Secretary Annual Report 2003 The Ladies Aid Society, meets on the third Thursday of the month at 2p.m. in St. Paul’s Court lounge. We are a small group with ten members. Two of our members moved away during the summer. We would welcome any ladies of the Church to join us for an afternoon of worship and fellowship.

STAINED GLASS WINDOWS Our colourful memorial windows are much admired and we are proud of them. Dr. Moir says our windows commemorate themes of Faith and Service. There is a great deal to be noted as we look at each of the windows. Even very small details have meaning. The oldest window?...the circular "rose"-type window at the back of the gallery. It was installed when the church was built. The building was finished and dedicated in 1886. A newspaper of the time reported on the dedication service of St. Paul's, and stated, "Over the main entrance is a magnificent front window of stained glass of most elegant design." This window has no dedication or plaque. All other 10 windows are memorials. submitted by J. Aitken Window 1: On the east wall is the window in memory of the 7 men who died in the Second World War. It depicts ST. MICHAEL. "Be strong and of good courage"
St. Michael is the archangel mentioned as the leader of the angels against the dragon and his h ost in the Book of Revelation. The brilliant colouring of his raiment suggests the captain of the hosts of light, riding down the darkness. This youthful celestial warrior clad in coat of mail, sworded and shielded, stands triumphant, symbolic of victory over evil. Always a symbol of inspiration to the Christian warrior, St. Michael brings a message of special encouragement with assurance that the battle has already been won - in the eternal world. He reminds us that all the resources of the spiritual world are ours, when we battle for the right. St. Michael, as Captain of the heavenly hosts, is generally accepted as the protector of Airmen.

Church History
On August 4th, 1922 the first Protestant church in Sylvan Lake was dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of the early pioneers of the area, hence the name Sylvan Lake Memorial Presbyterian Church. However this was not the very beginning of this church. For several years previously people had gathered for worship in their homes and, later, in the Hazelwood Hotel and Dingwall Boarding House. These services were conducted by the people themselves or student ministers until finally their first resident minister, Rev. W.G. McKechnie , was appointed by the Board of Missions (as was each and every subsequent minister until Rev. Wilson was "called" by this congregation in 1995). Besides taking responsibility for their own worship services, these early Christian Pioneers set about raising funds for a church building. On January 5, 1921 the Ladies Aid Society was formed for this express purpose. By means of chicken suppers , teas, musical concerts and other activities the Ladies Aid Society and the Board of Managers were able to purchase the land (where the Memorial Presbyterian Church stands today) and the building materials required. The church was erected with volunteer labour and furnished with more money raised by the Ladies Aid Society. The first Communicant members listed in the 1927 records were:
  • Mrs. J. Dingwall

In 1924, the first church was dedicated at the corner of Liberty and Second St. As Bethlehem grew, a new sanctuary was built next to the old one. The sanctuary was built entirely of Mankato stone and an artist, Cyrus M. Running, was hired to paint a total of 58 biblical characters on the inner walls. The old church burned down in April of 1978, but the congregation rallied and built a new "Heritage" room, Youth room, and offices for Lutheran Social Services (which rents part of the facility) in its place. Bethlehem places a special emphasis on music and has four choirs which lead the congregation and perform special music for festivals and cantatas. Taken from a passage by Patricia L. Amlie

From the Hyde Park Historical Society newsletter - Winter 2001
An address given on the 50th Anniversary of Hyde Park Presbyterian Church
By Mrs. J. F. Gilchrist - May, 1910
Looking Back to Beginnings... Long years have flown since first we met In the old church that stood in the shade.Gray hairs have come, but we'll ne'er forget The good old times when we sang and prayed...No stained windows reflected the lightNor was pulpit in velvet arrayed;Yet every heart was cheerful and light,In the old church that stood in the shade. This hardly reads like a description of the Hyde Park Presbyterian church, yet the above lines were written many years ago by a former superintendent of the Sabbath School, Mr. James P. Root. The old church stood in a grove of oak trees at the corner of Oak Street and Hyde Park Avenue. It was a quaint little building with a V-shaped roof. The double doors opened upon a center aisle flanked on either side by hard wooden benches. Halfway down on one side was a short bench seating but two, the organist and choirmaster, and in the space thus made were the little melodeon and the big wood stove that smoked sadly when the wind blew from the east.

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among you." Matthew 18:20 The women of Second Presbyterian Church have a long and rich history of mission outreach, community involvement and regular Bible study. At various times called the Ladies' Aid Society, the Ladies' Benevolent Society and the Women's Auxiliary, this organization is now known as the Presbyterian Women and it is as vital and active a ministry today as ever! The Presbyterian Women's organization is dedicated to building an inclusive caring community for all women of Second Church. The goals of the Presbyterian Women are:
  • To involve women in the activities, work and worship of the congregation; To provide education in the Christian faith and to provide a place for discussion of that faith; To challenge women to identify their talents and to help them realize the joy of using these gifts in God's service; To help overcome loneliness, especially among those women who are unable to participate in church activities; and To endeavor to make our community a better place for all.

First Presbyterian Church of Clinton and Presbyterian College two institutions geographically separated by less than a mile and joined by a journey of faith and reason that has spanned 125 years celebrated their relationship Tuesday night as First Presbyterian Church was recognized as the 2005 Distinguished Member of the college's William Plumer Jacobs Society in appreciation of extraordinary leadership and generous support of Christian higher education."
The event, held in conjunction with the meeting of the Presbyterian College Board of Trustees, brought together individuals and representatives from churches, foundations, and corporations who have made gifts or pledges of $100,000 or more to the college. The society, established by the college's trustees in 1982, is named for the founder of the college and the first pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
"First Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian College share significant anniversaries this year - our 150th and the college's 125th," said Dr. Dennis Tedder, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, who accepted the award along with elders Jimmy Jacobs and Jettie Young, both descendents of Jacobs. "First Presbyterian Church was present from the college's inception. Our past and our present are interwoven, inseparable, and the opportunity to now mark this milestone year together is wonderful. We do celebrate all that our institutions have shared from our beginning and through the years."

Part 1.2: "Suprise at our own Audacity" continued Clinton in the early 1880s was a village of less than 500 population, with muddy streets and scarcely a dozen buildings altogether. Its virtues were extolled in the 1882 catalog in these words:
The health of the town is unsurpassed. It is not subject to malarial diseases, is remarkably free from pulmonary complaints, has a dry atmosphere, excellent water and is the highest point on the railway from Greenville to Columbia; the mountains 50 mites distant, being visible from the College building.
The morals of the village are the best. No liquor is sold within the limits of the town, a special law forbidding its sale within three miles of the Clinton depot... There are three churches, the Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist, and the community is almost without exception a church-going. Sabbath-keeping community.
William States Lee stepped down from the presidency in 1885 but remained for four more years as professor of mathematics and mental philosophy and as manager of the boarding department. He was succeeded as president by the Rev. Robert Perry Smith, a Davidson College graduate who had served the previous nine years as president of Reidville Female Academy.
Smith, like all of the early presidents, combined administrative duties with teaching. He was professor of natural science and English literature on the three-man faculty. The other teacher, in addition to Lee, was Edwin L. Barnes, who handled Latin, Greek and German as well as being bursar and clerk.

The Peter Plotkin Paintings Most of the settlers who came to Collin County during the decade, 1840-1850, were from Tennessee and Kentucky. This was due to the fact that Louisville, Kentucky, was headquarters for the Peter's Colony, the company authorized by the Republic of Texas to give land in this area to settlers. Many of these people were Cumberland Presbyterians, a branch of the Presbyterian church which originated in the Cumberland region west of the Alleghenies. There were three Cumberland Presbyterian churches in Collin County before the Civil War, the ones at Walnut Grove, Parker, and McKinney. After the close of the Civil War, due to the aftermath of devastation in much of the "Deep South," settlers began coming from these states to Collin County. Some of them were members of the "Southern" or "Old School" Presbyterian Church, our Presbyterian Church, U.S. So it was that our church came into being in 1874. In one of his notable addresses, the Reverend Robert I. Gannon, former president of Fordham University, said, "All true civilization is ninety per cent heirlooms and memories - an accumulation of small but precious deposits left by the generations that have gone before us." It is in the spirit of calling to mind the heirlooms and memories of our church that this little booklet is presented to the members of the congregation.

The founders opened the college on what was then an excellent site; but now that the school has outgrown its present quarters they would be the first to rejoice in the result of their labours and to give their blessing to this move which will both preserve and enrich our heritage. The unknown editor of Patchwork who wrote the above extract must have had her patience severely tried as the school did not move in its entirety until 1958. History of Hethersett In 1853 Thomas Lavidge, a Crown Land Grantee (a person to whom land is granted by the Crown) established a family homestead on 33 acres situated at the corner of Elgar and Burwood Roads in the Parish of Nunawading. The homestead was very near the site of Ballyshanassy, to be declared a township in 1854 (renamed Norwood in 1874 and Burwood less than 5 years later).
