POTTER, HELEN BEATRIX
Mycologist, writer (1866 - 1943) She was the first child of Rupert and Helen Leech Potter, born July 28, 1866 in London, England. She is known today for her wonderful children's stories. Just about everyone is familiar with the tale of Peter Rabbit. During her later years she was widely respected throughout England as an expert on fungi, although the Royal Society did refuse to publish at least one of her technical papers. From many walks in the woods she amassed a set of detailed watercolors of fungi. The collection (some 270 completed by 1901) is in the Armitt Library, Ambleside, England. Around the time of her death in 1943 many of her notes, including her paper on spores, were burned during the bombing of London in WWII. She kept a private journal which wasn't published until 1966. The reason for this is that it was written in a code of her own invention. The code was broken by Leslie Linder, an engineer. Once the code was broken it took him seven years to decipher Beatrix Potter's journal. In the journal she details her attempts to have her theories and drawings noticed, usually to no avail. Perhaps if Beatrix Potter hadn't been so shy and if the male scientists at the Royal Botanical Gardens hadn't been so dismissive we would not have her legacy of Peter Rabbit.

Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter was born in South Kensington, London, as the only daughter of Rupert Potter, a wealthy rentier . Potter spent a sheltered childhood with her brother Bertram, who was five years younger. She amused herself by painting, using specimens from the Natural History Museum or sketching the nature in the Lake District, where the family spent summer holidays. Potter had several pets, including rabbits. She later described her London home as "my unloved birthplace." Potter never went to school, but was taught at home by a governess. She learned to read from the works of Sir Walter Scott's and Maria Edgeworth. As a young woman she still lived at her parent's house. From the age of fifteen until she was past thirty, she recorded her everyday life in her own secret code-writing. A Happy Pair and was accompanied by verses written by Fredric Weatherley. In 1893 Potter wrote a letter to a young friend, Noël Moore, the five-year-old son of a former governess. The text was illustrated with drawings of animals and contained the first version of The Tale of Peter Rabbit , a high-spirited bunny. The text also included some other characters like Squirrel Nutkin, which had first appeared in Potter's letters. The book was privately printed in 1901 and then published by Frederick Warne and Co.: the publishing company that had first rejected it. Potter and one of the publishers, Norman Warne were engaged to be married in 1905, but Warne died of leukemia only a month later. Potter turned once again to her books.

Beatrix Potter
The Blue Plaque at Gorse Hall Estate, Stalybridge, celebrates the site of Gorse Hall which was built by Beatrix Potter's maternal grandparents, John and Jane Leech. Beatrix often visited Gorse Hall with her mother, Helen Leech. It was unveiled on the 23rd November 1999, by John Heelis OBE, great nephew of Beatrix Potter's husband, William Heelis.
Gorse Hall, Stalybridge
John and Jane Leech bought the Gorse Hall estate in 1835 and built a new mansion, also Gorse Hall in 1836. This is located further up the hill, not far from the Old Gorse Hall.
Early Life
John and Jane Leech, like many prosperous families of the age, had five daughters and three sons. One of the daughters, Helen Leech, married Rupert Potter, son of Edmond Potter, another local successful businessman of the day, who ran Dinting Vale Printworks near Glossop. The happy couple married at the Unitarian chapel in Hyde in 1863 when Helen was 24. They started married life in London and spent their first three years in Upper Hartley Street.

Beatrix Potter 1866 - 1943
BEATRIX POTTER was born in London in 1866 and lived until 1943. Her love of the countryside stemmed from her childhood holidays in the Lake District. In the 19th Century, there was no formal education for girls and Victorian values also forbid her to become a farmer. When Beatrix was young she had various animals as pets, which she made drawings of, whilst watching them.
During the summer months she would go to Scotland with her parents for a 3 month holiday. When she was [16] they could not go to Scotland because the house they usually rented was not available. Therefore, her parents decided to go to the Lake District and stayed at Wray Castle near Ambleside.
Beatrix became friends with the vicar, Cannon H. Rawnsley of Wray Church, who would later encourage Beatrix to publish her first book, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit". Cannon H. Rawnsley would become one of the co-founders of the National Trust, in the hope of preserving the natural beauty of the Lake District.

Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter (1866 - 1943) is famous for her illustrated children's story books, starting with The Tale of Peter Rabbit . But the idea of depicting animals dressed, and behaving, like humans, may have come from Randolph Caldecott's earlier illustrated books of nursery rhymes . (This is not to say that Caldecott was the first to do this: see for example " The Dogs' Grand Dinner Party ", published in New York, USA, in 1869. Our thanks to www.marchhousebooks.com for the picture of this, below. Beatrix Potter's father was active in the art world (the painter Millais was a family friend), and bought the whole set of original pictures by Randolph Caldecott which had been used to produce The Three Jovial Huntsmen , and, in 1884, two of the original pictures for A Frog he Would A'Wooing Go An original oil painting by Randolph (with two pictures: one on the front, and another on the back), together with two other prints from his Picture Books, still hang in Beatrix Potter's house, Hill Top, in Near Sawrey, Lake District, England. Beatrix Potter
HELEN Beatrix Potter - author of the Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin books - was 16 when she first visited the English Lake District. But from then on it was a love affair that continued until her death aged 77 in late 1943. Beatrix was born on July 28, 1866 in South Kensington, London. Her parents lived in a large house with several servants and she was cared for by a nurse, only seeing her mother and father at bedtimes and on special occasions. Her brother Bertram was born when she was six and they were taught at home by a governess until Bertram was old enough to go to school. Beatrix stayed at home where she was encouraged to read and write and taught music and art. She had many animals as pets, which she studied and made drawings of. Overprotective, her parents discouraged friendships with other children, so instead, the young Potters collected a number of animals - at one stage they had a green frog, two lizards and a ring snake. To many, Beatrix seemed shy and reserved due to her limited contact with other people but her journal, started when she was 15 and written in her own code, revealed an outgoing woman with critical opinions of the artists, writers and politicans of the day.
