Summer Celebrations 2: Family Fun on Little-Known Holidays
July 28 — Beatrix Potter’s Birthday Today we celebrate one of the greatest names in all of children’s literature — a name loved all the world over by children and adults, a name that will live on as an example of all that is good in books for kids. That name is Potter. No, not Harry. The other Potter. Beatrix Potter. In all the hubbub of current book trends, it’s easy to overlook those titles that are somewhat dog-eared. We neglect those illustrations that are slightly faded. Beatrix Potter’s work, though old, is worth remembering. You may know her from her most famous book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit . As of 2001, it was still ranked second in the Publishers Weekly all-time children’s best-sellers list. In her lifetime (1866-1943), she wrote over 30 books for children, all filled with illustrations that weave together detail and whimsy, two kid-friendly ingredients. Her eye for detail is astounding. As Margaret Lane writes in The Tale of Beatrix Potter , “She drew like a naturalist — no leaf too modest, no twig too small for her attention.”

A book review of Beatrix Potter’s “The Fairy Caravan”
by Laura Hart - as published in the Summer 2004 issue of the Fell Pony Journal
If you thought that Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck were all there was to Beatrix Potter’s writings – think again! From England, where all things ‘fairy’ seem to emanate, came her book “The Fairy Caravan”. This book is a treat not only for children of many ages, but for adul ts it is quite intriguing and offers a wealth of insight into the British country life and language. Indeed in her preface Potter admits that she only published this compilation at the insistence of her “friends beyond the sea” and that she “left them (the stories) in the homely idiom of our old north country speech”. As one of her friends beyond the sea, I am grateful to her for this! Words such as lish, kine, stirk, merks, and of course fell will send you running for your colloquial dictionary. (I discovered that lish means active and stirk means young bullock or heifer). But there is also uveco, demerara, kesh, mowdie-warps, snod, Oxo, and my personal favorites – Pony Billy in Pringle Wood (the fairy wood) “always going widdershins” and whinnying “Hinny Ho!

In 1901, Arthur Conan Doyle (one year before he was knighted) bought one of the few hundred privately printed copies of The Tale of Peter Rabbit for his children. The next year Peter Rabbit became available to a wider audience, and over the next 10 years, Potter wrote and illustrated 20 more books for children, including The Tale of Benjamin Bunny The Tale of Tom Kitten The Roly-Poly Pudding (1908), and The Tale of Mr. Tod (1912). Potter's first professional work, in 1890, was for a German greeting card firm, which commissioned her to illustrate a volume of children's verse in 1893. She brought to her work her governess-supervised childhood study of plants and animals, from which she gathered so many of the structural details that are evident in even her early work. John Everett Millais, the Pre-Raphaelite painter best known for Ophelia, was a friend of Potter's family and encouraged her work. While her illustrations have none of the gilded ornateness of the Pre-Raphaelites, their influence can be seen in the meticulous attention to detail in her reproduction of nature (if mice wore dresses and carried brooms, they would no doubt look just like Potter's drawing for The Tale of Two Bad Mice).

English author and illustrator of picture books for the very young, creator of the characters Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and others. Potter's popularity has shown no sign of diminishing since she created the timeless children's books. "Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were - Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter. They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big tree"
(from The Tale of Peter Rabbit, 1902) Beatrix Potter was born in South Kensington, London, the only daughter of Rupert Potter, a wealthy rentier . Potter spent a sheltered childhood with her brother Bertram, who was five years younger. She amused herself by painting, using specimens from the Natural History Museum or sketching in the Lake District, where the family spent summer holidays. She never went to school, but was taught at home by a governess. As a young woman she still lived at her parent's house. From the age of fifteen until she was past thirty, she recorded her everyday life in her own secret code writing.

MAKES HIS MARK IN HIEROGLYPHICS! Tale of Peter Rabbit Includes brief footnotes from the translators on the difficulties of turning Edwardian English into Ancient Egyptian. For example Cotton-tail has been re-written as 'Linen-tail' and Mr. McGregor is written as 'son of Gregor'. The result is a fascinating cocktail of an ancient language with modern text and illustrations, which has been made accessible through the use of this much-loved classic.
