Beatrix Potter Art Prints are no longer being published Beatrix Potter is best known as the creator and illustrator of the children's book, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit." Born in London in 1866, Potter had a lonely childhood, much of which was spent in the English countryside, away from friends and neighbors. Her pet rabbit Peter helped relieve her boredom and eventually became the inspiration for the main character of her book. Potter began her writing career after completing her studies in art and natural history. "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," published in 1900, was the first in a series of books. For the remainder of her life, Potter continued to create wonderful fantasies about rabbits, squirrels, mice, frog and other creatures that have constantly piqued the interest of children. She died in 1943, leaving a legacy of tales that still retain their popularity with children today. home my account artist biographies email ... help cart checkout

Beatrix Potter 1866-1943 Beatrix at age 16 Beatrix Potter was born in England and lived there all her life. She is known today for her wonderful children's stories, especially Peter Rabbit. From childhood, Beatrix was an avid student of Nature. She drew and painted all the animals she could find, and loved painting mushrooms. Her two strongest interests were always being in the natural world and painting what she saw there. Beatrix filled many sketchbooks and kept a journal all her life. Beatrix was financially self-supporting at a time (early 1900s) when women were not really supposed to be. With money earned from her books she eventually bought land and became a farmer. During her later years she was widely respected throughout England as an expert on fungi (a mycologist). She was also a respected watercolor painter; she painted many landscapes and over 270 watercolors of mushrooms (see below). A lonely and sheltered child, she loved animals and took up drawing and painting at a young age. Children like a fine word every now and again," she once observed. In 1890 she began illustrating greeting cards with delicate watercolors. She transformed a picture letter to a young friend into her famous classic The Tale of Peter Rabbit "Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail and Peter," she wrote... After rejections from at least six publishers, the tenacious artist used her savings to privately publish the book in 1901. She designed the small book (5-3/4" X 4-1/4") for tiny hands to hold comfortably. She found a publisher in 1902 and by the end of 1903, she had sold 50,000 copies. The first of a series of 23, the novel featured precious illustrations of Potter's furry friends and launched her remarkable career as a storyteller, celebrating

More Than Just Bunnies: The Legacy of Beatrix Potter
by Deborah Straw Beatrix Potter may be best known as the creator of charming characters like Peter Rabbit, Mrs. Tiggy Winkle and Hunca Munca, but, as is true in most lives, she was in reality many other things, as well. A product of Victorian times, she far surpassed societal expectations of women of her era and class. She was an accomplished botanical illustrator, a sheep breeder and farmer, a wife, and a conservationist greatly devoted to her home, the Lake District of England.
Born in 1866 in London, to a wealthy Victorian family, (Helen) Beatrix was one of two children (she had a brother, Bertram). She was home schooled by governesses. As Bertram was sent away to private school, Beatrix was often alone. She always loved animals. Whenever possible, she smuggled mice, rabbits and hedgehogs into the house.
Another artistic pursuit for the teenage Potter was writing a journal in a code no-one could read. The Journal of Beatrix Potter 1881-1897 (first published by Frederick Warne in 1966) is part of this document, transcribed from code by Potter scholar Leslie Linder. She kept this type of journal until the age of 30.

Her father was a wealthy investor. Potter lived a secure childhood at home, with her youger brother Bertram. She was taught by governesses, and learned reading by Sir Walter Scott's novels. At age fifteen, she began a diary, and invented a code to write in it. This she continued till the age of thirty. It was decoded by the engineer Leslie Linde, and after seven years of deciphering, it was published.
In the 1890's, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," and some other short animal stories, originally written to amuse the sickly child of one of her governesses, after first being rejected, were published. They brought her immediate recognition. Up till 1913, she continued to write her animal stories and illustrate them with water-colour. Her books portray animals wearing clothing, but otherwise, she did treated her animal or human characters realistically, without sentiment, imaginatively, but clearly. Among her stories their are a few poems, as well. Their simple humor had appealed to children and adults alike since their first publication.

Potter, Beatrix
Beatrix Potter was born in South Kensington, London, as the only daughter of Rupert Potter, a wealthy rentier . His father's property came from the Lancashire cotton industry as her wife's. Potter spent a sheltered childhood with her brother Bertram, who was five years younger. She amused herself by painting, using specimens from the Natural History Museum or sketching the nature in the Lake District, where the family spent summer holidays. She never went to school, but was taught at home by a governess. As a young woman she still lived at her parent's house. From the age of fifteen until she was past thirty, she recorded her everyday life in her own secret code-writing.
In 1893 Potter wrote a letter to a young friend, Noël Moore, which was illustrated with drawings of animals and contained the first version of THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT. The book was privately printed in 1901, and then published by Frederick Warne and Co. Potter and one of the publishers, Norman Warne, engaged in 1905, but he died of leukemia only a month later. Potter turned back to her books as the one creative impulse left to her. "If it were not impertinent to lecture one's publisher - you are a great deal too much afraid of the public, for whom I have never cared one tuppenny button. I am

http://www.foolishgames.com/luke/beatrixpotter/
Lucas Holt English 242 May 29, 2001 Helen Beatrix Potter "It is all the same, drawing, painting, modeling, the irresistible desire to copy any beautiful object which strikes the eye. Why cannot one be content to look at it?" (Beatrix Potter) The life of Beatrix Potter is a reflection of her works, a marvelous story with a simple beginning. A governess looked after the children, and taught them at home. Music, and art were common in the curriculum. The nurse taught Beatrix about witches, and fairies, which later inspired some of her work. During the summers, the Potter family would rent a home in the Scottish Highlands or in the Lake District. The children explored together, drawing woodland creatures they encountered during their travels. "At times they would even skin and dissect dead animals to further understand their skeletal structure" (Women Children’s Book Illustrators—Beatrix Potter (1866-1943). Bertram matured. His parents decided to send him to boarding school. Again, Beatrix found herself alone. At age fifteen, Beatrix began to write in a journal. She used a cryptic code that she devised from letters, numbers, and symbols. The journal logged events dating as early as 1881. She recorded conversations with relatives, observations, and reactions to events happening in other parts of the world. Her journal begins with a conversation with her grandmother:

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 2 items Potter, (Helen) Beatrix (1866-1943), English writer and illustrator of children's books, born in London, and privately educated. During most of her adult life, she lived in a farm cottage in Sawrey, Westmoreland County, where she kept many animals as pets. Unsuccessful in attempts to publish her serious botanical work (watercolor studies of fungi), she wrote (1893) and published privately (1900) for an invalid child The Tale of Peter Rabbit. This story about the first of many animal characters she was to create became a children's classic throughout the world. Other diminutive animal characters created by her include Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Inseparable from her whimsical tales are her delicate but exact and detailed watercolor illustrations depicting her characters in domestic scenes. Potter's other works include The Tailor of Gloucester (1902) and The Tale of Tom Kitten (1907). Interested in the preservation of the natural landscape, she bequeathed her property in Sawrey to the National Trust, which also maintains her home as a museum.
