A year later, Dryden turned the table around and began writing in blank verse . This led him to the creation of his greatest play, All For Love (1678). After becoming Poet Laureate (1668) and historiographer royal (1670), Dryden produced a series of satires . His most successful was Absalom and Achitopel (1681). The same decade also withheld Religio laici The Hind and The Panther (1687), and William III (1688). Before his death at the age of 69, Dryden also wrote a few critical works.
Pepys, Samuel

Samuel Pepys was born in London, England and was educated at Cambridge. After going to university, Pepys joined the naval service and quickly moved up the ranks which soon brought him to the position as a secretary to the Admiralty (1672). After being accused of taking part in the Popish Plot (1679), Pepys was imprisoned and lost his position in office. In 1684, Pepys was reappointed to his position, and in that same year he also was appointed the president of the Royal Society. Pepys was never a major writer but from January 1, 1660, to May 31, 1669, he held a diary. His philosophy on everyday subjects and his paragraphs on the Great Plague (1665-1666), The Great Fire of London (1666), and the arrival of the Dutch fleet (1665-1667), have made his diary intriguing to many. Due to the diary being written in cipher, the diary was not decoded until 1825. Pepys died at the age of 76.

You certainly don't know any of his poetry. Or do you? Ever heard the expression "a little learning is a dangerous thing"? That's from Pope. How about "fools rush in where angels fear to tread". No, it's not Elvis Presley. Or "To err is human, to forgive divine"? Pope again. Or "Woman's at best, a contradiction still"? The hoary old chauvinist is Alexander Pope. Read Pope and you continually come across bits you already know, quotations you thought were from Shakespeare or Anonymous. Alexander Pope in his day was the master of the one-liner. Or two-liner actually, since much of his work is in rhyming couplets. For example, that famous passage about forgiveness is half of: Good nature and good sense must ever join

POPE, ALEXANDER for, though we had several great poets, we never had any one great poet that was correct, and he desired me to make that my study and aim (Spence, p. 280). Trumbull turned Popes attention to the French cnTtics, out of the study of whom grew the Essay on Criticism; he suggested the subject of Windsor Forest, and he started the idea of translating Homer. Popes next publication was the Essay on Criticism (1711), written two years earlier, and printed without the authors name. In every work regard the writers end (1. 255) is one of its sensible precepts, and one that is often neglected by critics of the essay, who comment upon it as if Popes end had been to produce an original and profound treatise on first principles. Pope took an amusing revenge, which turned the laugh against his assailants. He sent Steele an anonymous paper in continuation of the articles in the Guardian on pastoral poetry, reviewing the poems of Mr Pope by the light of the principles laid down. Ostensibly Pope was censured for breaking the rules, and Philips praised for conforming to them, quotations being given from both. The quotations were sufficient to dispose of the pretensions of poor Philips, and Pope did not choose his own worst passages, accusing himself of actually deviating sometimes into poetry. Although the Guardians principles were also brought into ridicule by burlesque exemplifications of them after the manner of Gays Shepherds Week, Steele, misled by the opening sentences, was at first unwilling to print what appeared to be a direct attack on Pope, and is said to have asked Popes consent to the publication, which was graciously granted.

ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
literature
Pope, Alexander (1688-1744)
The works.
London : Printed by W. Bowyer, for Bernard Lintot, 1717-1735.
One of the greatest poets of the eighteenth century, Alexander Pope was very careful with the publication of his writings and exercised strict editorial control. This edition of his Works , issued when he was only 29 was a meticulously self-crafted presentation of the poet. From the youthful portrait on the fontispiece to the selection and editing of the poems themselves, this was tailored to present the Catholic writer in the most favourable light. It was released at the same time as the 3rd volume of his translation of Homer's Illiad which was an enormous success and dominated the reception of Homer until the Romantic period.

    Abstract:
It has been argued that the Marriage Act of 1753, which put the law of marriage in England and Wales on a statutory basis, was a harsh measure that caused hardship to women, who were thereby deprived of the protection offered by the previous law. This essay challenges this view, showing that the formalities prescribed by the Act were hardly novel, and had been observed even when they were not essential to the validity of a marriage, while the protection afforded by the previous law was not as generous as has been claimed. It also argues that the courts adopted a purposive approach to the interpretation of the Act that softened its impact. Winston, Michael.

    Abstract:
Seventeenth-century poets of postwar England address the aftermath of regicide through traditional elegy and funereal lament. As the century wears on, however, artists come to write about the beheading of the king using a more sophisticated sentimental idiom. Poets such as John Denham, Margaret Cavendish, and Andrew Marvell utilize the allegorical figure of the stalked deer to illustrate more clearly the brutality of which men are capable and to vivify the pain and suffering experienced by the vanquished monarch. This essay examines their methods and reasons for fusing Charles's memory with the pathetic symbol of the hunted stag. Richardson, John, 1944-
