Know then thyself, presume not God to scan; The proper study of mankind is Man. Placed on this isthmus of a middle state, A being darkly wise, and rudely great: With too much knowledge for the skeptic side, 5 With too much weakness for the Stoic's pride, He hangs between; in doubt to act, or rest, In doubt to deem himself a god, or beast; In doubt his mind or body to prefer, Born but to die, and reasoning but to err; 10 Alike in ignorance, his reason such, Whether he thinks too little, or too much: Chaos of thought and passion, all confused; Still by himself abused, or disabused; Created half to rise, and half to fall; 15 Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all; Sole judge of truth, in endless error hurled: The glory, jest, and riddle of the world! Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Pope, Alexander (1688-1744), English poet, who, modeling himself after the great poets of classical antiquity, wrote highly polished verse, often in a didactic or satirical vein. In verse translations, moral and critical essays, and satires that made him the foremost poet of his age, he brought the heroic couplet, which had been refined by John Dryden , to ultimate perfection. Pope was the son of a London cloth merchant. His parents were Roman Catholics, which automatically barred him from England's Protestant universities. Until he was 12 years old, he was educated largely by priests; primarily self-taught afterward, he read widely in English letters, as well as in French, Italian, Latin, and Greek. A devastating illness, probably tuberculosis of the spine, struck him in childhood, leaving him deformed. He never grew taller than 4 ft 6 in and was subject to violent headaches. Perhaps as a result of this condition, he was hypersensitive and exceptionally irritable all his life.

No other poet in the history of English literature has handled the heroic couplet with comparable flexibility and brilliance. Alexander Pope inherited from John Dryden the verse from that he chose to perfect. He polished his work with meticulous care and, like all great poets, used language with genuine inventiveness. His qualities of imagination are seen in the originality with which he handled traditional forms, in his satiric vision of the contemporary world, and in his inspired use of classical models. Pope was born on May 21, 1688, in London, where his Roman Catholic father was a linen merchant. After the Glorious Revolution of 1688 his family moved out of London and settled about 1700 at Binfield in Windsor Forest. Pope had little formal schooling, largely educating himself through extensive reading. Sir William Trumbull, a retired statesman of literary.....

November 20 ~  Never Be Disappointed Poems of Pope
B l e s s e d is he who e x p e c t s nothing, for he shall n e v e r be disappointed." ~ Alexander Pope Called "the great moral poet of all times" by Lord Byron, Alexander Pope (1688-1744) was born to a wealthy family and attended Catholic schools in England . At age 12, a crippling spinal curvature disease forced him to learn on his own at home. By the time he was 23, Pope wrote the poem, An Essay in Criticism , which defined the doctrine of Classicism and included the famous line: "To err is human, to forgive , divine." Well-known in his time as a level-headed satirist and master of double-meanings, he made classical ideals contemporary using the heroic couplet. "The hidden harmony is better than the obvious," he said. Called the poet of sanity and daylight, he made a fortune with his translation of the Iliad and Odyssey. He moved in 1717 to a villa in Twickenham, where the property's stunning gardens became a haven for his continued deteriorating physical health. "Fools rush in," he wrote, "where angels fear to tread."

Bibliographies
  • Primary Works
    • Reginald Harvey Griffith, Alexander Pope: A Bibliography , 2 vols. (Austin: Univ. of Texas Press, 1922-27). A bibliography of Pope's published writings, from his earliest publication in 1709 to the posthumous appearance in 1751 of his collected Works , edited by William Warburton. Considered a landmark in bibliographical scholarship, but limited by the state of bibliographical knowledge in Griffith's day and by the great complexity of the many editions of Pope's works. Should be supplemented by Foxon, Kowalk, and the English Short-Title Catalogue (ESTC)
    • David Foxon, English Verse 1701-1750: A Catalogue of Separately Printed Poems with Notes on Contemporary Collected Editions , 2 vols. (Cambridge: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1975). Pope's publications are covered in vol. 1, pp. 613-35. Because the scope of this bibliography goes well beyond Pope, it is not as detailed as a descriptive bibliography, but it contains a wealth of information that supplements and supersedes Griffith.
    • English Short-Title Catalogue (ESTC) . This electronic catalogue, retrievable on CD-ROM and in other electronic forms, aims "to provide a comprehensive bibliography of the printed output of the hand-press era," from approximately 1473 to 1800. Entries in the bibliography list library locations of copies and note the existence of facsimiles, including microfilm copies. Lists over 700 texts and editions by and about Pope.

Alexander Pope
Short Biography Birth
Alexander Pope was born in Lombard Street, London, the son of a prosperous merchant and Roman Catholic. Education
He was largely educated at home. His parents moved to Binfield in Windsor Forest in 1700 (12), probably in response to laws which, among other restrictions, prevented Catholics from living within 10 miles of London. Here he contracted the first of a series of illnesses, which, together with his physical deformity (he had a hunched back and was only four feet six inches tall), left him a semi-invalid for the rest of his life. The precocious poet
By 1700 (12) he was already writing imitations of Cowley Chaucer and Spenser , and translating Ovid and Homer . His Pastorals appeared in Tonson ’s Miscellany (1707, 19), and in 1711 (23) his Essay on Criticism was published, quickly establishing his literary reputation. The Scriblerus Club
He jointly founded the Scriblerus Club in 1713 (25) with the intention of composing joint satires on false learning and pedantry. Mature poetry
A short version of The Rape of the Lock , a mock heroic poem on the theft of a lock of hair from a society beauty by a society beau, was published in 1712 (24), followed by Windsor Forest in 1713 (25), and the full version of
