Greetings birdcam and NYSERNet reflector fans
This is to let you know as of tomorrow I am resigning from NYSERNet to
write a book for children called The Internet Yellow Pages for Kids. It
will be published by Osborne-McGraw-Hill in the Spring.
Maybe I'll CU sometime again, and the birdcam can resurface, if I can get
bonded ISDN to my house (I don't have a "last mile" problem, I have a "last
18,000 feet" problem, sigh).
This should not affect the reflector, which NYSERNet will continue to
support, I hope.

90. Rader's KAPILI.COM:Press Information
by Jean Armour Polly Publisher Osborne/McGraw Hill Copyright 2000 Author Jean Armour Polly Publisher McGraw Hill, Berkeley, CA 94710 Copyright 1999
http://www.kapili.com/index_press.html
One of the most asked questions we receive is "Who makes these sites?" and "Why do you make these sites?" There is one driving force behind all of the sites created by Andrew Rader Studios... Andrew Rader.
Andrew has a background in both science and computers. While he graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in Physiology and Cell Biology, he found success working with computers in the corporate world. For several years, he worked as a freelance designer and then moved to Los Angeles to complete his studies in screenwriting.
He found work in the entertainment industry acting as an Associate Producer for an interactive television network. At that time, the Internet was starting to grow in popularity and he began producing small web sites. As he gained experience, he moved on to work as Producer for the Nissan and Infiniti web sites. Returning to entertainment, he was also Senior Producer for StarTrek.com.
During the time he produced commercial sites he was able to maintain his pet projects with a small group of volunteers. The most notable of these projects is the web site Chem4Kids.com. As the years passed, the original chemistry site blossomed into the four companion sites. Biology4Kids, Geography4Kids, and Physics4Kids eventually joined Chem4Kids. Then there was Kapili.
Andrew envisioned a science and math destination for students of all skill levels. The site would have tutorials, activities, and expeditions from around the world. Not only would Kapili be a solid educational resource, Andrew insisted on making Kapili a distinct environment. His desire to create a protected world led to the development of the Kapili Islands. Not until recently were the resources made available to make this site possible and re-launch Kapili.com as a subscription site. The content of Biology4Kids, Geography4Kids, and Physics4Kids has now been incorporated into Kapili.com. Chem4Kids.com will remain a free service.

Jean Armor Polly is the author of "The Internet Kids Yellow Pages" and the original "Surfing the Internet". Her home page is available at http://www.well.com/user/polly Polly's talk was titled "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road, Hello Information Superhighway: Net-mom Explains it All," an explanation of why kids should be using the Internet, and what parts they should be using. What makes a good site?
  • Authority
  • Appropriateness
  • Timeliness
  • Exists on a stable site
  • Low-bandwidth friendly
  • Actuates "wow!" button
  • It has what we're looking for
  • It's within our selection policy
She strongly recommends that parents and teachers use the net alongside their children. She demonstrated 10 good sites and 10 sites that didn't make it into her book. Links to the pages are available on her homepage Who builds/controls content? People with/without decency? Many sites are built by people with very good intentions, but on the other hand people are allowed to put whatever they want on their own web sites. Oftentimes it's difficult to determine what's educational and what's offensive it depends on the views of the user. People can solicit ratings for themselves from existing ratings groups: W3, Information Highway Parental Empowerment Group, SafeSurf, McKinley/Magellan, Net-mom (her own rating), "Green Light" sites.

Advertising is often aimed directly at young people. Not only do they spend $70 billion a year, but they influence their parents' purchases also. Youth are hit by certain appeals - appeals to be like everybody else, sex appeal, even negative appeal. This activity is to increase student awareness of persuasion tactics as seen in magazine advertising.
Sponsor: The lesson was developed by a teacher at Daly Middle School, Lakeview, OR. The site is part of the Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM).
