64. On-line Violence Often Teen Vs. Teen; Experts Tell Parents To Beware
A lot of the cases that end badly are teens doing it to other teens, says Jean Armour Polly of Jamesville, author of Netmom s Internet Kids Family
http://www.crime-research.org/library/Jeanne.htm

On-line violence often teen vs. teen; experts tell parents to beware
Much media attention about the dangers of children surfing the Internet focuses on adults preying on children.
But just as often - or perhaps more often - it's teen-on-teen harassment, or worse, violence.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, almost one in five young Internet users has received an unwanted sexual solicitation. Juveniles made 48 percent of those solicitations.
On Sunday, Nonie "Annie" Drummond, 14, was killed by a 17-year-old she met over the Internet, police said.
Drummond was home alone and meeting Spencer Lee King for the first time after nine months of chatting online and on the telephone.
For many teens, chat rooms, e-mail and instant messaging have all but replaced talking on the telephone. Teens are especially attracted to chat rooms, Polly says, because chatting gives the teen a feeling of social contact without having to look their best.
Teens are often tempted to pretend they're someone they are not.
Polly, a national consultant on Internet safety, says parents need to educate themselves on the dangers on the Internet, but the problem is bigger than the Net: Parents need to support their children, especially teen girls, emotionally.

Softcover. 101 Things to Do on the Internet (Computer Guides Series)
by Mark Wallace From Horn Book
This kid-friendly volume describes a series of Internet projects, most of which involve visiting a website. Clear instructions guide readers to point their browsers to pages about sports, dinosaurs, moviemaking, and other topics. Helpful illustrations include screenshots of websites. Unfortunately, it's tough for a book to keep pace with the ever-changing Net: at least six of the hundred or so suggested links are already dead. Glos., ind. I also quite agree with Jean and Roberto that auctioning the names in general is not desireable for the public interest. It gives more opportunity for those who have eccessive money.
I am also concerned about the bad behaviors of registrars.

For the record, I agree with the statement that deleted names should be free (in the sense that they should be publicly available, not taken as hostage by regiustries or registrars). Moreover, I am strongly opposed to *any* auction. The point is that if we start by accepting auctions on expired/deleted names, we establish a principle that can be used in the future by registries/registrars on auctioning *any* domain name. This might sound irrelevant if we think of .com or any already well-established TLD, but I'm sure you see the point for the future new TLDs.

Book Review:
by Jean Armour Polly Purchase this book here Let's face the Internet is too vast a place to always be able to find what we want when we want it. It takes a lot of human research to pull out the gems, and throw away the trash. This is the whole premiss behind the Mining Co.'s 'Take Back the Net!' philosophy. So when I was given this book by Jean Armour Polly, how could I not love it? The book is as big as my telephone book, and much more organized ;-) It starts with an A - Z index, listing topics of interst, then the sites that cover these topics. It goes on to cover sites of interest in different countries, how to keep you kids safe on the Net, and even has some family fun highlights. The only down side is, it doesn't list this site :-( The book comes with an interactive CD, and should be a standard in any parents library.

The Internet needs your attention

The good news is that the online world offers children experiences that are educational and rewarding. In addition, being able to use the Internet effectively may increase a child's school performance and future job potential. However, this new medium also can present unsafe situations. Just as you would not allow your child to wander alone into unknown territory, you also would not want him or her to interact on the Internet without parental guidance and supervision. To help you keep your child safe online, this brochure provides an overview of three areas of the Internet popular with children (email, the Web, and chat rooms). For each area, we:
  • List positive benefits, as well as possible risks, for your child
Provide a range of parenting tips that are most relevant to that area Explain what parental control tools can do
This brochure also includes a resource list for additional information.
