Parry's Thoughts About the Book ... Reviews of the Book One of my favorite parts of the book features the famous "moms" on the Internet. Sites which have developed around an Internet-savvy woman, who created a special place for other parents. This is an amended excerpt from A Parents' Guide to the Internet.
Net Mom (www.netmom.com).
Internet Mom (www.familypc.com) SGT Mom's Kidz (www.sgtmoms.com) Kathleen Motteler is Sgt Mom. Kathleen is an army wife and mother currently stationed at NAB Little Creek VA. She first dreamed up the idea for SGT MOM'S when she felt a need for a more casual form of support that couldn't be found in official channels. Being an army wife meant losing friends every time they moved. When she moved one more time she found that although she treasured her children dearly, she craved friends and adult conversation. In her own words, I'll let Kathleen tell you how she wandered around cyberspace, clueless about where she was going or how to get there. It'll also show you how nervous she was getting online. And just look! A few years later and she's one of the leading "moms" online. It'll inspire even the most fearful among you. [After we got our computer] Updated: 4/17/04

Chapter 24
Some Great Family Websites and Parenting Resources Parenting Sites I've found some favorite parenting sites, and there are new ones daily. They are a wonderful resource for parenting tips and can help you when you're feeling all alone, as parents. There are two sites that I think parents should be bookmarking before any others, Family.com and FamilyPC.com. Family.com (www.family.com) This site has taken over the old Family Planet site and added Disney pizzazz. It's clear that a lot of thought has gone into making it easy to navigate and user-friendly. It contains something for every family. Want an activity for your 6-year-old? Insert your child's age, and click. Voila! Thinking about adopting? . . . no problem. Planning a family vacation? You've got it. Everything for everyone. Disney's cornering the children's market continues into cyberspace with this site filled with activities and subjects ranging from Learning, Travel and Food, to general parenting. This site is filled with a number of useful family tools including free electronic greeting cards and reference sites to help kids with homework and other projects. A separate message board and chat section add an interactive aspect to the site giving parents and kids alike the opportunity to comment and converse with other visitors to the site. Andy King
First registered in March 1995, this Michigan license plate (WEBMSTR) adorns the rear of a gold 1998 Honda Accord. The front plate reads WEBREF, which when typed into your browser, redirects to webreference.com. One of the principals of Athenia Associates, and an employee of internet.com as WebReference.com's Managing Editor/webmaster, Andy King tried out numerous combinations of possible plates for fun when he was younger, including his personal favorite IAMYODA. Andrew decided instead to grab a vanity plate about his profession, that of WEBMASTER. WEBMSTR fit nicely and Andrew enjoys the smiles he sees in his rear view mirror.
Rich Wiggins
First registered in 1993. This Michigan plate is currently registered to a reliable aging hunk of metal, a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis. Rich's significant other, Judy Matthews, wanted to get him an INTERNET plate when Rich started work on a book

by Jean Armour Polly This 576-page softcover book is nearly twice the size of the first edition with its topical content well-organized in alphabetical order. I consider this book a requirement for all kids who surf the Net, whether they're at home or in school. It also is a great reference book which serves up a healthy menu of quality Internet resources for kids and familieseasily accessible to newbies and intermediate users. If you know a skeptical parent or two who believes the Internet is loaded with bad stuff or if you'd like to encourage your child's teacher to become Net-savvy and blend more technology into the classroom, this book would be also be ideal. Aside from providing a slew of "family friendly" web sites, it also shows that with the proper guidance (including tips on parental filtering software, magic cookies, how to stop unwanted e-mail and more) the Net can be a ideal educational resource and source of fun for kids. Net-mom web site, which has a lot of hypertext links from the book, that are easy to double-click (instead of entering lengthy URLs). It would have been nice if this book came with a CD-ROM, which would help eliminate the need for kids to type (and make typos on) individual web site addresses. Perhaps, there's hope for aCD-ROM included with the Third Edition (or a stand-alone CD-ROM)!

At-risk high school students in the states of Washington, Texas, Massachusetts, and California "meet" online to discuss teenage pregnancy, drug prevention, Middle East foreign policy, and other topics of current interest. (Jensen, 1991/92) Students of all ages collaboratively produce a newspaper, Global Village News, using input from dozens of worldwide student "news bureaus" linked through more than 15,000 free computer bulletin boards in over 50 countries. The paper is distributed to thousands of users throughout the world. (Rose, 1992) Students from the United States and other countries go on a simulated space shuttle journey, assuming various roles including secondary mission control, selecting alternative landing sites and docking other shuttles. (Clement, 1992) What makes these common educational experiences exciting and unique? They all involve students and teachers from around the world interacting through computer networks.

BERKELEY, Calif., June 24, 1997 Osborne/McGraw-Hill and author Jean Armour Polly have teamed up again to prove that the Internet is not the enemy and that it can be safely explored with "The Internet Kids & Family Yellow Pages, Second Edition" (June 1997, $19.99), an updated and expanded version of the original and best-selling "Internet Kids Yellow Pages." Created specifically with parents and children in mind, "The Internet Kids & Family Yellow Pages, Second Edition" is a comprehensive yet friendly guide brimming with over 3,000 quality kid-safe listings, plus a new Parenting and Families section, and many unique features to help families, libraries, and schools plan fun and rewarding Internet outings. Known as Net-Mom(TM) by cyberkids everywhere, Polly's unique background as a public librarian, children's Internet expert, and mother makes her the perfect Internet tour guide for kids and families. By capturing so many valuable and child-friendly alternatives, her new book derails the problem of children being exposed to violence and other adult content on the Internet. "It's important to remember that the Internet is not the enemy," said Polly. "The Net is only the transport method, just like the telephone system. What needs to be filtered out are the places you can 'call.'"

Thank you to Marjan Glavac for this July 2000 award! Marjan is many times a master teacher and his "Busy Educator Website" is full of wonderful ideas for teachers. I am proud to have warranted his seal of approval, and shall strive to follow in his footsteps of "teachers helping teachers"! Do take the time to visit his website, and to sign up for his free online newsletter too! Thank you Jean Armour Polly for this June 2000 award! Jean Armour Polly, aka Net-mom, was a public librarian for many years before becoming a best-selling author. She is credited with coining the phrase "Surfing the Internet", back in 1992! Her approval of this site indicates it will be listed in the 5th ed of her book, "Internet Kids and Family Yellow Pages". Wow! I'm very proud to have received her "slice o' pie", because "only the top sites make it into this book as I am very picky! " Thank you, Jean... glad you approve!

There is an interesting (but disturbing, on many levels) article regarding
use of a public terminal and a hotmail e-mail account. The fugitive had
been using a library computer and Hotmail to communicate with relatives. He
was unaware that the message headers allowed police to track the message
back to the library.
