NET-MOM APPROVED!

BERKELEY, Calif., October 2001 (ISBN 0-07-219247-X) by Jean Armour Polly. Jean recommends and reviews engaging, educational, and recreational Web sites that are age appropriate for her readers - wired families with preschool to high school kids. She emphasizes that the sites she selects offer both online fun as well as suggest activities to do offline. Jean personally explores and scrutinizes all sites she lists in her book, making sure they are family-friendly and do not contain adult content. "Because of my unique background as a public librarian, Internet pioneer, and mom, I wrote this book because I believe kids belong on the Net," she explains. "I set out to find places on the Net that were built expressly for children or where people of any age could find real value and answers to their questions," she adds. Following are new items and highlights of the 2002 edition:
  • More than 3,500 educational and entertaining Internet sites, all handpicked and family-friendly. Sites are arranged in broad subject headings, organized alphabetically. The main A-Z section is written for kids in grades K-12, although many general reference works for all ages are included
  • Star symbols highlight important sites worthy of special mention
  • "Rubber Ducky" symbols draw attention to sites best for preschoolers
  • A large "Family Fun" section, which provides lots of elements for mixed age groups to do together with sites the whole family can enjoy

Jean Armour Polly will describe how and why she took on the role of Net-mom, and developed her book and database of more than 3,500 recommended web sites for children. Jean believes that the most common danger on the Internet is not pedophiles lurking behind every web site, but misinformation contained in web sites, email, and other online information resources. Parents should definitely teach their kids Internet safety rules, but they shouldn't think their jobs are done. Just as important is teaching children to evaluate information on their own. Not everything on the Internet is true, authoritative, or right for kids to use. Learn how to become a Net-mom or Net-dad, and teach your children media literacy that skill will follow them throughout their lifetimes. Jean Armour Polly , USA http://www.netmom.com/

Net Mom
Jamesville's Jean Armour Polly delivers the Internet to kids
By Russ Tarby
Jean Armour Polly is a thoroughly modern mom. She cooks meals, washes her share of dishes and laundry and feeds the family pets, including several furry felines, a school of goldfish and a flock of ducks which frolic outside her rural Jamesville abode. In her cyber-persona as Net-Mom (her own legally registered trademark), she also monitors the ever-expanding Internetnot only for her own family, but for children and families worldwide.
As Net-Mom, Polly works as a private consultant, researcher and speaker. Recent clients include America Online, Germany's Bertelsmann Foundation, Leadership Texas and Disney Online. Recently she started a new project for the Children's Television Workshop, the outfit that produces Sesame Street for PBS-TV. "I used to work for Mickey Mouse," Polly jokes, "but now I work for Big Bird." Polly attended the White House Kids Online Summit last December. "Safety on the Net is one hot topic these days," she observes. This year, she'll also participate in five "Safe Surfing Workshops" around the United States, sponsored by MCI Foundation. Central New Yorkers may also recall hearing Polly and her co-host

From British Columbia
Monty Moose is one of many stuffed animals that travel the world and report about their adventures to Mrs. Boekhout's class at the Nestor Elementary School in British Columbia, Canada. In fact Monty was the first "stuffie" to go on a stuffie exchange with another classroom across the world. One of Monty's trips took him to visit Jean Armour Polly, author of Bird Studies Canada . She offered to drive Monty to the Lab of Ornithology for a visit. Monty and his class were thrilled. The class routinely visits the project's web site to submit data and to watch birds at the Lab's feeders through FeederCam . Monty volunteered to help fill the Lab's feeders while Mrs. Boekhout's class watched from Canada through the FeederCam. Monty Visits Monty came to the Lab on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Polly, Jean Armour. The Internet Kids Family Yellow Pages (includes CDROM), third edition, Osborne, 1999, $34.95. http//www.osborne.com; for updates on
http://www.joycevalenza.com/print.html
With these 3 print directories, teachers can surf with certainty tech.k12 / Joyce Kasman Valenza Directories help us plan and locate the things we need when we need them. It would be tough to find a home without the Yellow Pages or a family room without the television listings. A directory is perhaps even more critical for planning our use of the Web with children. With its millions of items to index, selection and quality control of Web resources are major issues. For teachers, directories can be a first step in integrated lesson planning and a major tool in designing classroom-tailored directories, whether on a Web page or simply a list of bookmarks. With limited access to workstations and limited time online, planning may be essential. "You can't carry the whole Internet around with you. You can share a book with others, especially people who really haven't seen the Internet. Your principal, your parents, your grandparents each will have their own hot buttons. It could be astronomy or recipes using asparagus," she said. Polly says books can be a "good convincer" of the Internet's value, especially if you can help a person find his or her own niche topic. "Books are great for pre-surfing," she said. "It saves people a lot of time. They can plan their Internet adventure offline. I may not want to look up every Web page on the United Kingdom, but I could browse through the links in a book to find good starting points." And speaking of the United Kingdom, Polly's Yellow Pages devotes 111 pages to countries of the world. While most of those other thick yellow Web directories do a fine job, Polly's is really the only comprehensive offline guidebook for children, listing more that 3,500 child-friendly sites.

Product News highlights new products of interest to our readers. These are not product endorsements, nor are they paid advertisements. Information and news releases furnished by the members of PR Newswire, who are responsible for their fact and content. Known as Net-Mom(TM) by cyberkids everywhere, Polly's unique background as a public librarian, children's Internet expert, and mother makes her the perfect Internet tour guide for kids and families. By capturing so many valuable and child-friendly alternatives, her new book derails the problem of children being exposed to violence and other adult content on the Internet. "It's important to remember that the Internet is not the enemy," said Polly. "The Net is only the transport method, just like the telephone system. What needs to be filtered out are the places you can 'call.'" Polly and her research team of professional librarians, teachers, and Internet specialists carefully hand-selected only the best, safest, and most appropriate listings for family use. All of the listings are organized by subject category in an easy-to-use, alphabetical directory and include detailed site descriptions and personal recommendations. Kids of all ages can now safely access thousands of fun and educational web sites on their favorite topics such as Books and Literature, Comics and Cartoons, Endangered and Extinct Species, Pets and Pet Care, Music and Musicians, Sports, and more.

Interview with the original Net-mom
Jean Armour Polly talks about her #1 selling Internet and children's book.

by Melissa Burgos Brown
SCR*TEC
It started to look like kids might be kept off the Internet until their 18th or 21st birthday. I thought that was a terrible shame for two reasons. One would be because kids wouldn't have access to the really good information that was on the Net. The second reason was that the Internet wouldn't have access to kids. Jean Armour Polly
ean Armour Polly, the original Net-mom, is an internationally known expert on the Internet from the family's point of view. As an author, librarian, public speaker, and consultant, Jean has worked with such clients as Disney Online, the Children's Television Workshop, and America Online. She is co-founder and moderator emerita of PUBLIB, which is the oldest and largest Internet discussion list for public librarians. She is also known for coining the phrase "surfing the Internet," when she wrote an article by that title in 1992.
Jean is the author of the best-selling book
