Edgar Allan Poe is one of the great American poets of the fantastic and macabre. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who made their living by acting in touring companies. His father died when he was an infant, and his mother Eliza moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she continued to act until she too fell ill. She was cared for by the charitable women of the city, and when she died her two youngest children, Edgar and his sister, were sent to live with Richmond families. Edgar went to the household of John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant in the firm Ellis and Allan, whose wife Fanny had assisted Eliza during her illness.
In 1825 Poe's brief engagement to his childhood love, Sarah Elmira Royster, was broken off by her father, and in 1826 he entered the University of Virginia, then a chaotic place where the sons of the southern aristocracy carried pistols and unpopular professors were liable to be shot. Finding himself short of money, he gambled to supplement Allan's allowance. By the end of his first year he was $2500 in debt. Allan refused to pay his gambling debts or send him back to the university, and arranged for Poe to work at Ellis and Allan. Instead, Poe left for Boston, where he printed his first collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827) and enlisted in the army under the name Edgar A. Perry, eventually rising to the position of sergeant major. He determined to enter West Point and, during a brief reconciliation following Fanny's death, asked Allan to help him gain admission. He also published a second collection

It is generally considered to be the first detective story (called "a tale of ratiocination" by Poe) and the origin of many of the genre's prototypes: the 'locked-room' crime, the sidekick-narrator, the gentleman-amateur detective from whom no orangutan can hope to escape. Biography Edgar Allan Poe's odd life begins with his birth on January 19th, 1809 to the actor David Poe, and the actress Elizabeth Arnold Poe. The best way to begin the story of his life would be to have a bit of understanding about his parents. His father, David, was a member of a band of traveling actors known as the "Charleston Players". He toured around until he met Elizabeth Arnold, whom he married. Elizabeth was also in the theater business. A young, talented actress, she had been married to an actor by the name of Hopkins before she met David. Unfortunately, Elizabeth was suffering from tuberculosis, which was known as "consumption" at this time. Her having children only accelerated her condition. She stayed in pretty good health after her first child, William Henry Leonard, but she started to turn for the worse after Edgar's birth. By the time that her third child, Rosalie, was born, she was in poor health. No one knows what happened, but during a show in 1810 Poe's father David disappeared. Mrs. Poe and the children then rented a room from a Mrs. Phillips. By this time Elizabeth was in such poor health that she often had to skip plays. It was in this rooming house that Edgar met Mrs. Allan, who would later become his foster mother. Mrs. Allan and a Mrs. Mackenzie helped Elizabeth as much as they could. They even wrote an announcement in the newspaper asking for people to help Elizabeth's situation. All this was in vain, because on December 8, 1811, she died.

May 30, 2004 This section is to help advise on which kinds of authors to watch out for and which ones to avoid when it comes to reselling. I will be highlighting one author in each Bookologist newsletter that you could look out for in your travels to buy books. Please feel free to write in and disagree with me or give your opinions. Please also email me and nominate authors you think should be included. By working together, we can perhaps compile a good list of authors that would sell well in your book business. Edgar Allan Poe (1809 -1849)
Edgar Allan Poe has always been one of my favourite authors. All my life, I seem to have been interested in authors that died young and who passed away before they reached their full potential in life. Writers who died young seem to have had a touch of genius in them that was not fully exploited or appreciated. I firmly believe that Poe fits into this category. He joined the army and after he was discharged, he went into a life of writing and publishing. He self-published his first book Tamerlane in 1827, paying for the whole project out of his own pocket. He died at the age of 40 in circumstances that are still unclear and spawned a multitude of theories about how exactly he died. But he left behind him a legacy of books and poetry that have lived on and will continue to live on in people's minds. Who hasn't heard of books such as "Murders in the Rue Morgue," "Fall of the House of Usher" and poems such as "The Raven"?

Poe wrote of poetry's purity in his criticism, while writing theatre reviews that would shift copies for their ruthlessness. He began his literary career with verse that would charm readers with its musicality, and became famous for later stories of imponderable bleakness.

One the greatest and unhappiest of American poets, a master of the horror tale, patron saint to the practitioners of the detective story. Poe's stormy personal life postponed honest evaluation of his work in the United States - first he gained critical acclaim in France and England. His reputation in America was relatively slight until the French-influenced writers like Ambroce Bierce, Robert W. Chambers, and representatives of the Lovecraft school secured his place in the literary hall of fame.
