DELPHIC DICE Hermes the messenger and culture-carrier brought the art of writing and the science of number, the mason's craft of piling one stone upon another (and much else) to archaic Greece, including a magical cube: the die. The complex and frequently contradictory nature of Hermes suggests that he is a very old god. Some elements (among them dice and gaming) reveal him to be a cultural adaptation of the god Thoth, the Egyptian lord of magical lore. In some Greek myths, it is Hermes who gets credit for inventing dice, whichas god of shepherdshe is said to have fashioned from the astragaloi , or the knucklebones from either sheep or goats. Pick a Digit, Any Digit
One of the most amazing mathematical results of the last few years was the discovery of a surprisingly simple formula for computing digits of the number pi. Unlike previously known methods, this one allows you to calculate isolated digits - - without computing and keeping track of all the preceding numbers. No one had previously even conjectured that such a digit-extraction algorithm for pi was possible, says Steven Finch of MathSoft, Inc., in Cambridge, Mass. The only catch is that the formula works for hexadecimal (base 16) or binary digits but not for decimal digits. Thus, it's possible to determine that the forty billionth binary digit of pi is 1, followed by 00100100001110. . . . However, there's no way to convert these numbers into decimal form without knowing all the binary digits that come before the given string. In hexadecimal form, the number pi is written as 3.243F6A8885A308D313198A2E0. . . , where the letters stand in for the hexadecimal equivalent of the base-10 numbers 10 (A), 11 (B), 12 (C), 13 (D), 14 (E), and 15 (F). It's straightforward to convert a hexadecimal expression into binary form but not into decimal form. The novel scheme for computing individual hexadecimal digits of pi was found by David H. Bailey of the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif., Peter B. Borwein of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, and Simon M. Plouffe, now at the University of Quebec in Montreal.

" Plouffe and Sloane are two researchers who have collaborated on a text about famous and useful sequences of integers. Currently, she is a professor in the Gerontology Department and Director of the Dr. Tom Louie Living Laboratory, a joint project of the SFU Gerontology Research Centre and the BCIT Technology Centre. She is widely known in the field of gerontology as an educator, researcher, and consultant. She is the author/editor of twenty books and over one hundred scholarly articles, reports, and chapters. She has been a consultant to the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing in B.C., the Continuing Care Division of the B.C. Ministry of Health and to Health Canada. She has served on a number of federal-provincial task forces, including one that established guidelines for comprehensive services for the psychiatrically impaired elderly, and one which developed design guidelines for housing and care facilities for the elderly.

Canada Dr. Gloria Gutman, Immediate Past President of the International Association of Gerontology, developed and directs the Gerontology Research Centre and is Professor Emeritus in the Gerontology Department at Simon Fraser University, in Vancouver, Canada which she also developed. Dr. Gutman served as the 17th President of the International Association of Gerontology from 2001 -2005. Dr. Gutman is the author/editor of twenty books and over 200 scholarly articles, reports, and conference papers. She has been a consultant to the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing in B.C., the Continuing Care Division of the B.C. Ministry of Health and to Health Canada. She has served on a number of federal-provincial task forces, including one which established guidelines for comprehensive services for the psychiatrically impaired elderly, and one which developed design guidelines for housing and care facilities for the elderly. Dr. Gutman’s research interests are wide-ranging; they include seniors’ housing, long term care, health promotion, dementia care and environmental design. Recent research includes "Behavioral Outcomes of Environmental Design Interventions in a SCU" and "Housing Options for Older Canadians: Case Studies and User Satisfaction." She is currently developing a series of projects to be conducted in the Dr. Tong Louie Living Laboratory, a full-scale simulated residence established to study effective design of environments and products for older persons and adults with disabilities.

Sandra P. Hirst is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary. She has served on the Board of CAG since 1998 and is one of the CAG representatives on the Canadian Health Network Seniors Affiliate Consortium. Sandi has served the CAG in several capacities including planning for two of its Annual Scientific and Educational Meetings, and is actively involved in provincial activities of the Alberta Association on Gerontology. Louise Plouffe , PhD
Louise Plouffe is Manager of Knowledge Development in the Division of Aging and Seniors, Public Health Agency of Canada. Upon completing a PhD in Psychology at the University of Ottawa in 1983, Louise taught gerontology at the Université du Québec à Hull. In 1989, she joined the staff of the National Advisory Council on Aging as a research and policy analyst, and has worked in the federal government since then. Her work largely involves the transfer of data and research on aging to inform the development of federal policies and programs for seniors and an aging society. Louise is a member of the Advisory Board of the CIHR Institute of Aging.

BERKELEY, CA — David H. Bailey, chief technologist of the Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and his colleague Richard Crandall, director of the Center for Advanced Computation at Reed College, Portland, Oregon, have taken a major step toward answering the age-old question of whether the digits of pi and other math constants are "random."
