Pliny the Younger (c.AD 61 - c.112)
Pliny the Younger, properly Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, was a Roman senator under the emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan, and is chiefly famous for his ten books of letters, which are an important source for Roman social history. He was a friend of Rome's greatest historian, Tacitus. Pliny was the son of a landowner from Comum in northern Italy, but on his father's death was brought up by his uncle, Pliny the Elder, commander of the fleet at Misenum, on the Bay of Naples, and author of the 37 volumes of Natural History . A famous orator, and pupil of Quintilian, the younger Pliny enjoyed a successful career in the civil courts and in the senate. As consul in AD 100, he delivered his

These letters concern an episode which marks the first time the Roman government recognized Christianity as a religion separate from Judaism, and sets a precedent for the massive persecution of Christians that takes place in the second and third centuries. In the year 112, Pliny the Younger was faced with a dilemma. He was the governor in the Roman province of Bithynia (modern day Turkey) when a number of Christians were brought into his court. It is unclear what the initial charges are, but he ultimately decided, despite the fact that the Christians seemed generally harmless to him, that he should execute them if they refused to recant their faith. Because he is unsure as to whether he can kill them legally for no other crime than their faith, he writes to his friend the Emperor for advice. The Emperor replies that he did the right thing in excecuting them, but advises him not to seek out Christians for prosecution. Sir, Deaconesses: but still I discovered no more than that they were addicted to a bad and to an extravagant superstition. Hereupon I have put off any further examinations, and have recourse to you, for the affair seems to be well worth consultation, especially on account of the number of those that are in danger; for there are many of every age, of every rank, and of both sexes, who are now and hereafter likely to be called to account, and to be in danger; for this superstition is spread like a contagion, not only into cities and towns, but into country villages also, which yet there is reason to hope may be stopped and corrected. To be sure, the temples, which were almost forsaken, begin already to be frequented; and the holy solemnities, which were long intermitted, begin to be revived. The sacrifices begin to sell well everywhere, of which very few purchasers had of late appeared; whereby it is easy to suppose how great a multitude of men may be amended, if place for repentance be admitted.

Pliny the Younger
It was a life-changing blow, but it was hardly unusual. Apart from the hazards of war, many Romans died young from infectious disease, famine, and during childbirth. Funerals and mourning were painful staples of daily life. Pliny wrote of witnessing one such funeral:
I've never seen a girl more cheerful and friendly; more worthy of long life. Barely fourteen, she blended virginal modesty with the wisdom and dignity of a mature woman. And her early death was all the more tragic since she was soon to marry a fine young man. The day had been chosen and the invitations sent. Such joy has turned to such sorrow! A Roman stylus used for writing. By the end of the century, he had risen to the rank of Consul, and was a member of Trajan's imperial board of advisors. But fame, he concluded, was the only tonic that would satisfy him. By chronicling his times, Pliny hoped, he might not only shape the empire's legacy, but also secure the fame he sought.
Death seems bitter and premature for those composing timeless works. My own mortality, my own writings come to mind. No doubt the same thoughts frighten you. While life is with us, we must struggle to make our mark so that death finds little it can wipe away.

Pliny the Younger's Observations
In 79 AD, Pliny the Elder died during the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius. His nephew, Pliny the Younger escaped the destruction of Pompeii and left a written account of the eruption. As you read the letter below, listen to this audio version read by a well-known actor: Now came the dust, though still thinly. I look back: a dense cloud looms behind us, following us like a flood poured across the land. "Let us turn aside while we can still see, lest we be knocked over in the street and crushed by the crowd of our companions." We had scarcely sat down when a darkness came that was not like a moonless or cloudy night, but more like the black of closed and unlighted rooms. You could hear women lamenting, children crying, men shouting. At last the cloud thinned out and dwindled to no more than smoke or fog. Soon there was real daylight. The sun was even shining, though with the lurid glow it has after an eclipse. The sight that met our still terrified eyes was a changed world, buried in ash like snow. We returned to Misenum and took care of our bodily needs, but spent the night dangling between hope and fear. Fear was the stronger, for the earth was still quaking and a number of people who had gone mad were mocking the evils that had happened to them and others with terrifying prognostications. We still refused to go until we heard news of my uncle, although we had felt danger and expected more. You will read what I have written, but will not take up your pen, as the material is not the stuff of history. You have only yourself to blame if it seems not even proper stuff for a letter. Farewell.

Pliny the Younger
Caius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, (62 – 113 AD) nephew of Pliny the elder was an influential orator and statesman of the early empire. He served all the common magistracies of the Cursus Honorum including Consul in 100 AD. He died while serving as proconsular governor of Pontus-Bithynia. He was a voluminous correspondent and we have nine books of his letters that were probably intended for public consumption. They relate to a large number of subjects and present vivid pictures of the times in which he lived. Works:

Did you know? The government of the Roman Empire changes significantly from that of the Republic. The senate, the elite class of Rome, functioned more as a club of the rich and famous families than as a governing body in the Imperial system.

C. Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Younger) : Letters
: Manuscripts and transmission The Letters of the Younger Pliny have come down to us in 10 books, 9 of his personal letters, and book 10 containing his official correspondence with the Emperor Trajan. The last was written during his tour of administration of Bithynia, during which he may well have died. The route by which the text of all these letters reached us is a little complicated. There were 4 main groups, which however are related:
  • The 10-book collection. This contained all the letters originally, although subsets circulated as we will see. Copies of this can be easily recognised by the presence of tables of contents at the start of each book. The 9-book collection. This contained books 1-9. The 8-book collection. This is a subset of the 9-book collection, and contained books 1-7 and 9. The 100-letters collection. This is a subset of the 10-book collection, containing letters from the start to V, 6.
There are also late 'mixed' manuscripts drawing on more than one of these sources; there are early editions printed from now lost MSS of excellent origin; and there is a manuscript including parts of two printed editions plus manuscript material of its own. Both the 9 and 10 book collection go back to antiquity; and books 1-9 in the 10-book collection are not copied from the 9-book collection.
