CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF COLUMBUS - 100 WARREN W. SIMMONS CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF COLUMBUS - 101 returned to Virginia and was married. The young couple made their wedding journey on one horse, which they rode alternately in returning to the Ohio home which Mr. Simmons had prepared for his wife. Their first bed was made of elm bark and animal skins. A little cabin was furnished altogether in a most primitive manner and they entered into the hardships and privations of pioneer life and as the years passed they were able to add many of the comforts of modern civilization. John J. Simmons, the father of Warren W. Simmons, was born at Homer, Ohio, September 17, 1826, and his environments in youth were those of the pioneer district. He attained manhood and married Miss Mary J. Wise, who was born in Washington, Pennsylvania, and was of Dutch lineage. She was the niece of Governor Wise, of Virginia, and cousin of Judge Wise and the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Wise. On the 11th of May, 1882, Mr. Simmons was united in marriage to Miss Hattie G. Lake, a daughter of Vincent V. and Amy Lake, of Johnstown, Ohio, her father being one of the best known stock-breeders of that locality. Mr. and Mrs. Simmons are the parents of five sons and a daughter: John V., twenty-six years of age, residing in Licking county, who married Essie Harris and has one son and one daughter, Fred and Louise H.; Austin A., twenty-four years of age, who married Olive Dewitt and makes his home at No. 86 Hayden avenue, Columbus; Scott E., twenty-two years of age, who married Winnifred Wickham, now living at No. 86 Clarendon avenue, Columbus; Louise. who died at the age of four years; Park, thirteen years of age; and Rolf. nine years of age, both of whom are still under the parental roof. The family residence is at No. 82 Hayden avenue.

TABLE OF CONTENTS History of PUCK MAGAZINE
Scope and Contents Note
Organization of the Collection Description of the Collection HISTORY OF PUCK MAGAZINE Joseph Keppler, a cartoonist working for Frank Leslie's Illustrated established Puck Magazine in 1876. The name of the magazine was taken from the elfin character in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream . Up until this time, American humorous journals had been modeled on Punch Magazine . However, Keppler refused to do this and created a different type of magazine. Each week the front-cover of the magazine featured a different cartoon. The centerfold and front and back covers were also in color. Puck started as a German-language weekly but an English version appeared the following year in March, 1877. The 16-page magazine sold for ten cents. For several years the English language magazine operated at a loss and was subsidized by the German version. However, circulation gradually increased and by the early 1880s Keppler was selling over 80,000 copies a week.

Henry Charles Lea Papers - Scope and Content
Correspondence According to the Lea's biographer, Sculley Bradley, Lea destroyed his early correspondence (prior to 1860). There is some significant correspondence during the Civil War, but the bulk of correspondence in these files dates from 1868 to 1909. Very little material in these papers is revealing of Lea's personal life or family relations. One very early letter (undated, ca. 1837) was written by Lea to his parents while he and his brother Carey were staying with relatives; there also is a single page from a letter that appears to be from his mother, Frances Anne Carey Lea, to Lea in 1853. An interesting group of ten items from his father, Isaac, to Henry C. Lea were written while Henry was sailing on his yacht through New England waters during the summer of 1881; these letters describe the assassination of President Garfield. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt were among Lea's correspondents, and there is a letter from Woodrow Wilson addressed to Arthur H. Lea, written when Wilson was president of Princeton University. Other United States officials to whom Lea wrote include James M. Beck (1861-1936), solicitor general of the United States; Dorman B. Eaton (1823-1899) of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, who drafted the Pendleton Act of 1883; and Noah H. Swayne of the United States Supreme Court. Lea corresponded with the following who were or later became mayors of Philadelphia: Rudolph Blankenburg (1843-1918); Edwin H. Fitler; Daniel M. Fox; Alexander Henry (1823-1883); W. S. Stokely, and John Weaver. Other prominent Philadelphians among his correspondents are: John J. Ridgway, Jr.; Joseph Wharton (1826-1909); William Sellers (1824-1905); Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912); and his father, the Rev. William H. Furness (1802-1896). Lea's papers are a source of information about the Wistar Association, open only to members of the American Philosophical Society, and the Wistar Party, of which Lea was dean for many years.

YALE'S MEMBERS
By Eric Samuelson, J.D. I am presently researching a biography on David Rockefeller. An overview of the book will soon be sent to a New York City agent for circulation among all the major publishing houses. Among the topics that will be covered is the role of British USA Round Table member Rep. Wayne Hays (Demo-Ohio) in "killing" the Reece Committee investigation of tax-exempt foundations, the disappearance of the research on the Rockefeller-funded Kinsey studies and the "disposal" threats made to Reece Investigator Norman Dodd by a lobbyist for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). In 1986, Hoover scholar Antony C. Sutton published his "magnum opus" - AMERICA'S SECRET ESTABLISHMENT: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ORDER OF SKULL AND BONES. In his preface Sutton said he had been given an eight-inch batch of documents which was "nothing less than the membership lists of an American secret society. Glancing through the sheets it was more than obvious this was no ordinary group. The names spelled Power with a capital P." Throughout the book Sutton hinted at even deeper revelations he would make in books to come. However, the full list never was published by Sutton. In making inquiries of those who knew Sutton, I was told that he had become exiled in his own country. For months I searched the Web looking for a list of the members of Skull and Bones. At long last, a notebook was given to me which required the use of a magnifying glass to make out the names. So, the following semi-final list is about 97% accurate. It opens the door to the Bones realm at a time that one of their own is now hitting the campaign trail for the Republican presidential nomination.
