DUMPING ON WOMEN
By Melanie Samson, PSI's Focus on the Public Services
Volume 11, Number 1, 2004, pp. 19-22
In South Africa, hardly any women drive garbage trucks or load the bins. Waste management is traditionally a male-dominated sector. But nowadays, lots of women are employed as street cleaners. As Melanie Samson explains: “Litter picking and sweeping are seen to be related to women’s domestic work.” A recent research project has revealed that a mix of these gender stereotypes and privatisation has aggravated the situation of women employees.
Privatisation poses one of the greatest threats to South African trade unions. Public sector unions organising workers at all levels and in all spheres of government are being confronted by an onslaught of initiatives to sell government assets, bring in private sector partners, issue management contracts to private companies to run government agencies, and contract private companies to perform services previously provided by public sector workers.
The trend towards privatisation is perhaps most pervasive in the municipal sector. The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has been at the forefront of struggles against privatisation of local government services. Since its founding Congress, SAMWU has opposed privatisation and fought for the provision of high quality, equitable, and publicly delivered municipal services. SAMWU has also had a long-standing commitment to promoting and ensuring gender equity.

Black African Literature
Introduction
In July 1989, we examined our holdings of sub-Saharan African writers. We discovered we owned 401 (53%) of the 756 writers covered by Donald Herdeck's African Authors (1973) and Hans Zell's A New Reader's Guide to African Literature This guide lists the writers for whom we own at least one book in the Humanities/Social Sciences Libraries in Wilson Library. We have not listed here all the writers whose works we own only in anthologies. Such writers, as for example Jean Pliya, Zulu Sofola, or Femi Osofian, may be found in MNCAT by using a keyword search with the writer's name. The arrangement by country displays our holdings by regions and incidentally by language; the list of writers by name allows one to discover whether a writer is in our collection without knowing his or her country. Current subscriptions to periodicals emphasizing African literature are also listed here, followed by an annotated list of reference books in Wilson. Subsequent to examining our collection, we are attempting to acquire works by significant writers we lack. We hope to increase our holdings in African literature carefully in accord with in the University curriculum.

A cash bonus for creativity Wendeen Lieberman tructured to generate funds in perpetuity, the board of trustees, made up of leading artistic practitioners, is respon-sible for policy decisions and setting of criteria for the allocation of funds. During ACT’s last funding cycle for 2001 and 2002, close to a R1-million was given in cash grants to specific projects and bursaries. The trust funds creativity, infrastructure, education and distribution in all the art disciplines: film, music, theatre, dance, craft, literature, visual art, education and arts administration and community art. Beneficiaries have included developmental and educational projects, civil society initiatives like com-munity arts festivals, organisational management and infrastructure support. In the field of literature the various projects are impressive in their depth and reach. The inspiration that exists behind each is truly wondrous. And it is to nurture that very inspiration that has the potential to shift our social enlightenment to one of acceptance and growth. Here are some of the groundbreaking literary projects that ACT is supporting: Historical interest
