Sol T. Plaatje: Native Life in South Africa
Native Life in South Africa Native Life in South Africa The opening words of the first chapter have become famous:
Awaking on Friday morning, June 20, 1913, the South African native found himself, not actually a slave, but a pariah in the land of his birth (21). … a person other than a native shall not enter into any agreement or transaction for the purchase, hire, or other acquisition from a native of any such land or of any right thereto, interest therein, or servitude thereover (quoted on p.62).
Plaatje makes us see the Act as having an almost conspiratorial dimension: it makes black tenant farming illegal; tenants and their families may stay on the white-owned farms only on condition of accepting employment as servants or farm workers and Searching fruitlessly for some institution in the social landscape of the time which could effectively oppose the injustices overwhelming his people, Plaatje decides: to the top

Honouring the authors
Wars are usually associated with heartache and destruction, but they also touch people's deepest emotions thereby stimulating creativity. With this stamp issue we focus on four people whose writing skills came to the fore as a result of their involvement in the Anglo-Boer/South African War. These writers each experienced the war from a different perspective, giving us their own unique views. On the R4,40 stamp two authors who wrote on the war from a British perspective are depicted. They are Winston Churchill and Arthur Conan Doyle. On the R2,30 stamp two authors who told their story from a South African point of view, Johanna Brandt and Sol Plaatje, are shown.
  • Winston Churchill - Churchill who came to South Africa as a war correspondent, was taken Prisoner of War by the Boer forces. In one of the controversial incidents of the war he escaped and returned to London in a blaze of glory. He wrote two books on the war, From London to Ladysmith via Pretoria and Ian Hamilton's March.

Man’s Point of View of a White Man’s War, éd. Life in South Africa, Before and Since the European War and the Boer Rebellion

SOL T. PLAATJE

Music teachers discover mine of choral gems in South Africa When Steven Fisher was planning his South African tour, travel agents told him not to go to Kimberley. Fisher, assistant director of the Philadelphia Boys Choir While the school had no formal music program, it certainly had music. At the end of his South African summer, Fisher was reluctant to abandon the connection he had made, and started thinking about how he could continue it. So he booked a South African tour for the world-renowned Philadelphia Boys Choir. When the choir went to Kimberley, the boys brought school supplies for their South African counterparts. Last year marked the first official exchange, when Temple opened up the opportunity to select music students with teaching experience. Robinson and Fisher returned to Kimberley, bringing along Temple student Lynnel Jenkins to teach and conduct the choir at Sol Plaatje. They had to take more than manpower, however. Robinson describes the exchange as a triangle: the Philadelphia Boys Choir holds an annual fund-raising concert for travel expenses, the Esther Boyer School of Music She was awe-struck by one of the very first performances she heard.

The Sol Plaatje Programme The Sol Plaatje Programme for the Development of Teacher Education in South Africa In his 'Call to Action' statement issued on 27th July 1999, South Africa's Minister of Education, Professor Kader Asmal MP outlined his education priorities. He wrote: "Despite our success stories we are failing especially with those wide-flung tracts of the [education] system that serve poor urban and rural communities. Our new systems of governance, administration and finance have not yet succeeded in hauling these communities out of the arbitrary and unequal conditions imposed by generations of apartheid and minority rule. In some areas and some respects the situation has deteriorated." A most serious weakness is that one third of all educators in South African schools are under-qualified or unqualified. This is a result of poor teacher training and education during the decades of apartheid rule. Changes in the curriculum, in the methods of governance and funding included in the Outcomes Based National Qualification Framework, Curriculum 2005 and the South African Schools Act make additional demands on teachers and emphasise the need for further training.
