    Synopsis
To this day Legends of the Jews remains a most remarkable and comprehensive compilation of stories connected to the Hebrew Bible. It is an indispensable reference on that body of literature known as Midrash, the imaginative retelling and elaboration on Bible stories in which mythological tales about demons and magic coexist with moralistic stories about the piety of the patriarchs. Legends is the first book to which one turns to learn about the postbiblical understanding of the biblical episode, or to discover the source for biblical legends that cannot be traced directly to the Bible. It is also the place to find answers to such questions as the date of Abraham's birth; what was Moses physical appearance; and what was the name of Potiphar's wife.

Quotes of the Day for 3 October 2004 - Physicians
Johns Hopkins University opened on this day in 1876, the first school in the US to train physicians. In many ways it became the model for modern medical training worldwide. We seem to have mixed feelings about our doctors, and the quotes in my collection reflect this. In the name of Hippocrates, doctors have invented the most exquisite form of torture ever known to man: survival.
Luis Bunuel Illness is the most heeded of doctors: to kindness and wisdom we make promises only; pain we obey.
Marcel Proust The best doctor in the world is a veterinarian. He can't ask his patients what is the matter - he's got to just know.
Will Rogers The physician must not only be the healer, but often the consoler.
Harriot K. Hunt A physician can sometimes parry the scythe of death, but has no power over the sand in the hourglass.

    http://www.womenofbrighton.co.uk/thrale.htm
MRS HESTER THRALE PIOZZI In 1741 Hester Salusbury was married to Henry Thrale, a prosperous businessman who owned a Brewery in Southwark, London. Henry had a country home in Streatham in South London and they had 12 children of which only 3 (daughters) survived to adulthood. Mrs Thrale was very well known for her salons where authors, poets and writers congregated, she was also sympathetic to the Bluestockings - women of literature and erudition - and highly thought of by the intellectual giant of the day Dr Samuel Johnson. The Thrale family spent much time in Brighton from 1775 - 1785 where Mr. Thrale had bought a house in West Street opposite the Kings Head (long demolished but there is a Blue Plaque) being visited often by Fanny Burney the writer of the scandalous best seller of the time Evelina Sea bathing was essential, the Thrale ladies and Miss Burney dipping even in the cold waters of a chilly November ! Widowed in 1781 Mrs Thrale at age 43 fell overwhelmingly in love with and married Gabriel Piozzi an Italian singer whom she had met in Brighton. Neither her daughters nor Dr Johnson nor even Miss Burney approved of the marriage but it was a true love match and the happy couple spent many years abroad before returning and retiring to a cottage in Wales. Mrs Piozzi continued to write and published two books about Dr Johnson but remained living in retirement with her beloved Mr. Piozzi who was never accepted by her daughters. She died in 1821.

Hester Lynch Salusbury Thrale Piozzi Diaries Manuscript, 4 volumes, 1789, 1815, 1816, 1820 Best known by the name Mrs. Thrale, Hester Piozzi was a close friend of Samuel Johnson, who lived and traveled with the Thrales much of the time in his later years. Mrs. Piozzi, a prolific bluestocking writer whose works include Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson ...(1786), kept diaries over many years. Four of these, along with three written by her second husband, Gabriel Piozzi, are in the James Clifford Collection and are the only Piozzi diaries known to be in the United States. The entries for the week of July 3, 1815, are a typical reflection of Mrs. Piozzi's wide-ranging interests, including theater and world events: Edmund Kean's performance as Shylock and Napoleon's final abdication both appear in the entry on July 8; Monday's entry refers not to the weather but to Mrs. Piozzi's regular weekly analysis of her finances; "Laura" in the Sunday entry is the Laura Chapel in Bath, where Mrs. Piozzi regularly attended services. Gift of James L. and Virginia Clifford
