They came from Lincolnshire and shaped the World.
Lincolnshire's history has been influenced by people from other lands; Romans, Normans, Saxons, Danes. But in later times it was Lincolnshire people who would help shape the modern world. The driving forces were curiosity, a sense of adventure, the desire to exploit the riches of the New World, and religion.
Pilgrims from Lincolnshire headed west. The Pilgrim Fathers set sail to escape persecution, starting communities in a young country – America. Later 250 of Boston's most influential citizens set sail to the New World, founding Boston, Massachusetts amongst others.

Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers The breaking waves dashed high On a stern and rock-bound coast, And the woods against a story sky Their giant branches tossed; And the heavy night hung dark The hills and waters o'er, When a band of exiles moored their bark On the wild New England shore. Not as the conqueror comes, They, the true-hearted, came; Not with the roll of stirring drums, And the trumpet that sings of fame; Not as the flying come, In silence and in fear - They shook the depths of the desert's gloom With their hymns of lofty cheer. Amidst the storm they sang, And the stars heard, and the sea; And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rang to the anthem of the free. The ocean eagle soared From his nest by the white wave's foam; And the rocking pines of the forest roared - This was their welcome home! There were men with hoary hair, Amidst that pilgrim-bank; Why had they come to wither there, Away from their childhood's land? There was woman's fearless eye, Lit by her deep love's truth; There was manhood's brow serenely high, And the fiery heart of youth. What sought they thus afar? Bright jewels of the mine? The wealth of seas? The spoils of war? They sought a faith's pure shrine! Ay, call it holy ground, The soil where first they trod: They have left unstained what there they found- Freedom to worship God!

Maritime Topics On Stamps : The Pilgrim-Fathers’ Voyage with the 'Mayflower'
In 1620 a group of religiously separatists chartered a ship called 'Mayflower'. Around that time, there were supposedly four different ships with this same name, so we do not know exactly which one it was that sailed to America. It is said that the 'Mayflower' fought against the Spanish Armada in 1588. From this we may assume that she had similar measurements and appearance of a galleon. A three-masted ship with a high platform aft, of approx. 180 tons, length of 90', beam 24', depth 13', armed with 10 cannons (in 1588), crew of 40. It is not known whether there were three square sails set on foremast and main mast (as shown on the Mali stamp) or just two. The 'Mayflower' was employed bringing wine from the Mediterranean to England and outward bound she carried furs and bales of cloth to France.
The Pilgrim Fathers were a small group of English Puritans who had separated from the Anglican Church. After fleeing to the Netherlands, in 1607/08, seeking refuge from persecution in England, they decided to pursue greater religious freedom in Colonial America.
They made a contract with English merchants who chartered two ships for the pilgrims and financed the journey. In return, the emigrants were to send back cargoes of fish, furs and lumber. On July 22, 1620, the emigrants boarded the 60 ton ship 'Speedwell' (left stamp) in the Dutch port Delftshaven and sailed to Southampton. There they changed over to the larger 'Mayflower', and both ships were intended to sail to America together. Both ships left port on August 5, 1620. Shortly after departure the 'Speedwell' was found to be leaking and both ships returned to Dartmouth (right stamp).

Thanksgiving Day, Harvest Festival Celebrations Mankind throughout history has held thanksgiving ceremonies. In Celtic Britain people believed that the success or failure of a crop was caused by good or evil spirit forces. The 29th September being Michaelmas Day marked the end of harvesting and is also a Celtic Quarter Day. Thanksgiving was offered to the Spirits and the harvest celebrated with a traditional meal of roast goose and apples. The origins of this festival still survive today as many communities in the UK enjoy their Harvest Festivals. In the United States, Thanksgiving Day is a time for a family thanksgiving celebrations. On this day a traditional meal of turkey and pumpkin pie is eaten. The origins of Thanksgiving Day in the United States date back to 1621 when the Pilgrims celebrated their first year and first harvest in the New World. The harvest was successful and plentiful, therefore the Governor, William Bradford announced a day of Thanksgiving for all. This tradition continued annually and in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln made a proclamation that a Thanksgiving Day be held annually on the 4th Thursday in November and in 2004 this will be on November 25th. To celebrate your Thanksgiving Day we offer the following Gift selections: The design for the Cloisters Goblet (below left) was taken from St. Botolph's Church "The Stump", Boston, England. The Pilgrim Fathers first set sail from Boston, England but were betrayed and sent back. The Puritans, who originated from Boston, England later set sail and founded Boston, Massachusetts.

The Pilgrim Spirit
The timeless words of advice of John Robinson “I am verily persuaded the Lord hath more truth yet to break forth out of His Holy Word.” A sweeping assessment of approximately 2000 years of Church history could be summarised thus… The story of the Church is one of an almost immediate falling away (from revealed New Testament truths and practices) followed by staggered periods of notable recovery. Such a statement is of course a broad generalization. Much of what is called ‘the Church’ today is still so obviously very far from New Testament purity. On the other hand, a reading of a good Church history book (such as Broadbent’s Pilgrim Church) shows us that there have always been pockets of faithful ones scattered throughout the centuries who have sought in varying measure to maintain New Testament teachings and practices - God always has His remnant! However, in the more mainstream story (as has been summarised above) we see that there has been times and seasons of men returning to an understanding and experience of some New Testament truth. The ever-present danger in all such ‘reforms’ is that people will have a tendency to think and say, “Ah, now we’ve got it,” and from thenceforth to become once again stuck on the treadmill of ‘religion’ instead of being carried along by the moving of the Spirit into the next phase of God’s blessing.

A Haven for Refugees : the Dutch Republic

One of the reasons for the Dutch to revolt against Spanish rule was the harsh treatment given to religious dissenters by the Spanish authorities - they burnt so-called heretics at the stake. By 1600, the Dutch Republic was firmly established and economically prospering. While wars over religion were fought in many regions of Europe, and religious minorities were persecuted according to slogans such as un roi, un loi, un foi (a king, a law, a belief) or huius regio eius religio (in whose territory you live, his religion you have), the Dutch Republic, a state in which (Calvinist) Protestantism was state religion, practiced religious TOLERANCE, i.e. everybody was permitted to practice his faith no matter if it was conform with the state religion or not, as long as he did not break the country's laws.
Many of the Dutch burghers, during the long years of the Dutch War of Independence (1568-1648) had lved in exile, mostly in EMDEN. They new the hardship refugees had to go through, but also the economic potential of refugees. The majority of AMSTERDAM's citizens of 1600 originated from ANTWERP, which was taken and sacked by the Spanish in 1585. Amsterdam's diamond cutting trade was established there by refugees from Antwerp.
Refugees arrived from elsewhere, Jews from Spain and Portugal, the most famous being philosopher BARUCH SPINOZA, Puritans from England who in 1620 would sail to Massachusetts; for years the PILGRIM FATHERS community lived in Rotterdam. Czech educator JAN AMOS COMENIUS settled in the Netherlands, as did French philosopher RENE DESCARTES for a while.

97. The Great Controversy - Chapter 16 - The Pilgrim Fathers
The world is on the verge of a stupendous crisis. Here is the authoritative answer to the confusion and despair of this tense age.

The Great Controversy
between
Christ and Satan

Chapter 16 The Pilgrim Fathers T HE English Reformers, while renouncing the doctrines of Romanism, had retained many of its forms. Thus though the authority and the creed of Rome were rejected, not a few of her customs and ceremonies were incorporated into the worship of the Church of England. It was claimed that these things were not matters of conscience; that though they were not commanded in Scripture, and hence were nonessential, yet not being forbidden, they were not intrinsically evil. Their observance tended to narrow the gulf which separated the reformed churches from Rome, and it was urged that they would promote the acceptance of the Protestant faith by Romanists. To the conservative and compromising, these arguments seemed conclusive. But there was another class that did not so judge. The fact that these customs "tended to bridge over the chasm between Rome and the Reformation" (Martyn, volume 5, page 22), was in their view a conclusive argument against retaining them. They looked upon them as badges of the slavery from which they had been delivered and to which they had no disposition to return. They reasoned that God has in His word established the regulations governing His worship, and that men are not at liberty to add to these or to detract from them. The very beginning of the great apostasy was in seeking to supplement the authority of God by that of the church. Rome began by enjoining what God had not forbidden, and she ended by forbidding what He had explicitly enjoined.
