Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Represented in his personal and editorial correspondence are most of the important literary figures of his time, including Robert Frost, Vachel Lindsay, William Vaughn Moody, and Edward Arlington Robinson. Date Range: 1833-1952 (bulk, 1890-1951) Size: 55.00 cu. ft. (114 boxes, 3 cartons) Language: English Provenance: The Papers were presented to the Library in 1953 by Miss Jessie Dunbar and Findley M. Torrence, in accordance with the wishes of Frederick Ridgely Torrence, Princeton Class of 1897. Some of the papers were in the possession of Olivia Torrence, Ridgely's wife, at the time of her death; the rest had been sent by Ridgely to his brother, Findley, in Xenia, Ohio. Portions of them were selected from both places by Theodore Maynard, who at one time intended to write a life of Ridgely, and were received by the Library from him on the understanding that he might borrow them. The rest were collected by Miss Dorothea Perkins, Ridgely's secretary, and through her initiative were deposited in the Library. Photocopying, literary rights, and citation:
