L ike Fanny Butcher, Josefa Veronika Humpal-Zeman (1870-1906) was a journalist, but her life was quite different. Josefa Humpal was a Bohemian immigrant who came to Chicago with her family in 1874, when she was four years old. Almost 45,000 Bohemians were living in the city. Seven years later, the family returned to Bohemia so the children could be educated there, and she attended high school. After her mother died in 1884, the family came back to the Chicago area. Josefa Humpal would become a journalist, a publisher, and a women’s rights activist. She married Robert Zeman in 1887, and they moved to Cleveland. Josefa Humpal-Zeman quickly saw that the marriage was a mistake and left her husband eight months later. Six months after the breakup, she had a son, Benjamin, who lived for just a year. During this difficult time, Mary Ingersoll, a prominent Cleveland churchwoman, became Josefa’s patron and mentor. Under Ingersoll’s influence, Humpal-Zeman, who had been a freethinker, joined the Presbyterian church and accepted temperance as a cause. She registered for courses in the College for Women of the Western Reserve. At the same time she traveled to Chicago and founded a chapter of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union among Bohemian women. She became a journalist, editing the student newspaper. She also wrote articles for Midwestern Slavic periodicals. When the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 was being planned, she exchanged letters with prominent American and Bohemian women, including a Czech poet and a Czech women’s rights advocate, about representation of Czech women at the exposition. Humpal-Zeman accepted the position of secretary of the Bohemian Columbian Exposition Committee and left college to work on the Czech exhibit.

In the early 1900's a new series of books appeared in print: the Twins books, by Lucy Fitch Perkins (1865-1937). These are excellent "Living Geography" materials. Each book contains the story of a set of (fictional) twins into which the authors weave historic, geographic, and cultural information. The books proved so popular that after Lucy Fitch Perkins' death, further titles were added by Daphne Rooke. For those who enjoy the Twins books, here is a list of them (taken from the front of The Japanese Twins ), together with suggested grade levels for each book. I have included asterisks against each of the books currently online

PREFACE
In this sad hour of the world's history, when so many homes have been broken up, and so many hearts burdened with heavy sorrows, it is comforting to think of the many heroic souls who, throughout the struggle, have gone about their daily tasks with unfailing courage and cheerfulness, and by so doing have helped to carry the burdens of the world, and to sustain other hearts as heavy as their own. It is comforting, also, to know that there are many instances of happy reunions after long and unspeakable anxieties, adventures, and trials. This story of two little Belgian refugees is based upon the actual experience of two Belgian children, and the incident of the locket is quite true. The characters of the eel-woman and the mother of the Twins have also their living originals, from whose courage and devotion the author has received much inspiration. [Page] [Page] CONTENTS I.

THE SUMMER DAY
I
day . For three whole bright months it was just one daylight picnic all the time! The people ate when they were hungry and slept when they were sleepy. The men caught hundreds of salmon, and the women split them open and dried them on the rocks for winter use. The children played all day long. The men hunted deer and musk-ox and bears up in the hills and brought them back to camp. They hunted game both by land and by sea. There was so much to eat that everybody grew fatter, and as for the Angakok, he got so very fat that Koko said to Menie, "I don't believe we can ever get the Angakok home in the woman boat! He's so heavy he'll sink it! I think it would be a good plan to tie a string to him and tow him back like a walrus!" "Yes," said Menie. "Maybe he would shrink some if we soaked him well. Don't you know how water shrinks the walrus-hide cords that we tie around things when we want them to hold tight together?" It was lucky for Menie and Koko that nobody heard them say that about the Angakok. It would have been thought very disrespectful.
