  • Westport braces for beachgoers
By David Levesque, Standard-Times staff writer
WESTPORT If winter's misery has anything to do with it, beach towels will cover every inch of sand at Horseneck Beach this Memorial Day weekend.
The beach will officially open its season Monday, but the parade of beach-goers has begun already. More...
    Fence creates budding controversy
My apple trees will never get across
and eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, "Good fences make good neighbors."

From "Mending Wall," by Robert Frost By Hans Schattle, Standard-Times staff writer
NEW BEDFORD A good cedar picket fence made for two furious neighbors Sunday afternoon one of them a city councilor. Robert Frost's poem aside, the tension stems from a disfigured rhododendron.
The battle began when Michael Murray, preparing to install his new fence, chopped down half the rhododendron, which is rooted in his neighbor's Robeson Street property but had protruded into his own yard.
The aggrieved neighbor, City Council President George Rogers, did not take kindly to the assault on his beloved bush, 40 years old and 12 feet tall.

National/US: How to Save 60,000 Lives a Year
February 23, 1999 MITZI PERDUE: Saving 60,000 lives annually Are you ready for an extraordinary statistic? Dr. John Graham from the Harvard School of Public Health says that if we allocated our treatment and prevention resources more wisely, we could save 60,000 lives a year in this country alone. To get an appreciation for the stakes involved, remember that 40,000 people a year die of AIDS in this country each year and 48,000 die in traffic accidents. "Imagine a pill," Graham says, "that would eliminate the equivalent of all of the AIDS deaths or all the traffic deaths." Graham and his colleague, Tammy Tengs from the University of California at Irvine, have been studying what really works - and what doesn't work - when it comes to keeping us safe and healthy. The results are surprising. "We investigated 500 programs," Graham says, "and we learned that some are highly effective: vaccinating children for mumps or rubella, painting edge lines on rural highways or taking the lead out of gasoline." On the other hand, the data show that a number of programs accomplish very little while costing a great deal. Included in the list: reducing exposure to radiation from nuclear waste storage facilities or power plants, or reducing further the already minute amounts of pesticides in our foods.

Curated by Sumpter Priddy III, American Fancy brought together, for the first time, many of the finest objects of the 19th-century artistic movement known as "Fancy" from some of the nation's leading museums and private collections, including the MdHS. Detailing a previously unexplored cultural and historic movement, American Fancy captivated audiences with more than 200 examples of the visually stimulating, ornately patterned, and engaging fine arts and domestic objects embodying the "Fancy" style. Characterized by light, color, motion novelty, variety, and wit, the style identifies its relationship with important cultural developments and beliefs in early 19th-century America. Fancy objects in the exhibition included furniture, ceramics, textiles, metals, glass, paintings, and prints purposefully designed to stimulate the senses, stir the emotion, and please the eye.
