CATAWBA COUNTY EXTENSION DIRECTOR ELECTED VICE-PRESIDENT OF
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COUNTY AGRICULTURAL AGENTS

Fred Miller, Catawba County Extension Director, was recently elected Vice-President of the National
"I look forward to serving as Vice President of NACAA," Miller said. "My leadership role in this organization will help keep me from becoming stagnant and stale in my professional work and provide new ideas and insight into ways Extension might better serve Catawba County citizens. In the 90 year history of NACAA, there has never been a Vice President from North Carolina and I am both honored and privileged to be the first."
Miller has served as Secretary of NACAA for the past two years and, as a result of his election, will serve a one-year term as NACAA Vice President. He was one of over 1500 Cooperative Extension Service agricultural agents and their families who attended the week-long professional improvement program.

All Agree: Teenagers Shouldn't Have Babies
Mitzi Perdue, Scripps Howard News Service
Cyndy Howell has an environmental concern, but it's probably not the kind you expect to read about in an environmental column. It has to do with one of the few big, important issues that virtually everyone can agree on. Liberal or conservative, religious or not religious, people can agree that until teen-agers are ready for adult responsibilities, they are better off not becoming parents. Howell worries that as a society we haven't done enough to create an environment that supports what we believe. Howell has spent her life as an educator, most recently in Harrisonburg, Va., and her classes include courses on family, love, courtship and marriage. She has some suggestions for what we can do if we want to encourage teen-agers to postpone parenthood. But first, why is this so important? "Look at this eye-popping statistic," she answers. "The United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy and births in the entire industrialized world." She goes on to point out that our rate is double that of the next highest nation, Great Britain, and almost nine times greater than Japan. "There's no way we can put a price tag on the social and emotional costs of teen-age pregnancy," she says, "but we do know that the direct costs to the taxpayers for Aid to Families with Dependent Children is between $35 and $50 billion annually."

    The Nature of Twins
By Mitzi Perdue, Scripps Howard News Service
Dr. Nancy Segal once found herself in a disconcerting situation. As an authority on twins, she was finishing a guest segment on a nationally televised show, when, with 20 seconds of airtime left, the interviewer suddenly asked her the following question: "How much of behavior is genetic and how much is environmental?" Segal often spends as much as 15 weeks dealing with this subject during her graduate seminars at California State University at Fullerton. How could she condense such a complicated subject into the 15 seconds of television time? The question went unanswered; it was too complex for a sound bite. Still, if she had been given a little more time, there was a lot she would have liked to say. For one thing, we now know more about the relative influence of genes and the environment than ever before. In the past, it seemed impossible to separate the two. However, in the last couple of decades, scientists have gained some revealing insights from studying twins separated at birth . To see why studying twins was useful to the scientists, it helps to keep in mind the difference between identical twins and fraternal twins.

Ophthalmologist to the ocean's sharks A Florida doctor examines the eyes of wild, live sharks to understand how the feared creatures see the world, and how we see them By Mitzi Perdue Scripps Howard News Service The sharks Dr. Stanley Spielman examines can be 12 feet in length, with mouths as wide as garbage cans.
It seems like a lifetime ago now, but before Sept. 11 the two subjects over which the nation's media had been obsessing about for months were ... do you remember? First, Rep. Gary Condit, and second, the Florida shark attacks. The Florida shark attacks still fascinate Dr. Stanley Spielman, a Florida ophthalmologist. Spielman is one of the few people on Earth brave enough and curious enough to have examined the eyes of live sharks underwater while in the wild. How did he do it? And perhaps more important, why? Shark wrangler and doctor To answer the first question first, Spielman and his associates start by catching sharks in the open ocean, using fishing lines. Once they've caught a shark, they attach a hook to its mouth. Then Spielman grabs the shark's pectoral fin, and guides the shark, using the line attached to the shark's mouth as if it were the reins of a bridle. It's a maneuver that makes you think of a horseback rider, except Spielman's mount would bite him in half if it could.

Chicken magnate Frank Perdue dies at 84 In building his poultry business, Perdue was the consummate entrepreneur and workaholic, who would put in 18 hours a day and get by on three or four hours' sleep. He had a cot in his office and often spent the night there, even though his home was 50 yards away. Perdue said he was initially uncertain about whether to take to the airwaves. He said a New York ad man persuaded him to run his own commercials, but also gave Perdue a warning. "He said, 'If you do this, you're going to have some heartaches from it. You're going to have people yelling at you or maybe screaming at you or criticizing you, but I think it's the best way to sell a superior chicken, which I think you have,"' Perdue said in a 1991 interview with The Associated Press. "It was quite a shock to my nervous system because I'd never been in a school play or anything and I'm basically reticent about speaking in public," said Perdue, who ultimately did 156 different ads. Perdue Farms' expansion in the 1970s was rapid, but it also sowed the seeds of worker discontent. The company opened new plants in rural, often-poor areas of the South, where labor was cheap. Inevitably, union activism sprang up, which Perdue sought to suppress.

    Hi Dr. Weingartner!
I am thinking of updating a column I wrote on soybeans back in 1982. At the time, a spokesperson for the ASA, Judy Trujillo, told me that if you spent a couple of hours in a supermarket, you could easily find 500 products that have soybeans in the ingredients. Does anyone know what the comparable figure would be today? If that figure is hard to come by, does anyone have an estimate of how many uses there are for soybeans? I'm looking for a fact or facts about soybeans that will catch the attention of the general public. Can you help me?
