SU HOME Mitzi Perdue Appointed to National Library Commission (June 22, 2004) SALISBURY, MD-When thinking of the phrase “endangered species,” images of African elephants and grizzly bears often spring to mind. Few think of libraries, another “species” endangered not by hunters and harsh weather, but by escalating journal costs and frozen or prorated budgets. Salisbury University’s Blackwell Library honored philanthropist Mitzi Perdue for her dedication to supporting the country’s libraries and her recent appointment by President Bush as one of 12 members of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. A 12-year member of the Library of Congress’ James Madison Society—the library’s primary link to the business community—she believes the finest use of taxpayers’ money is library support. “Libraries are fortunate to have Mitzi Perdue as their advocate,” said Dr. Alice Bahr, dean of libraries and instructional services at SU. “She brings her considerable intelligence, organizational talent and unflagging enthusiasm to the support of libraries at a time when they are all asked to do more with less.”

MITZI PERDUE: Is Global Warming Real? Yes
(July 28, 1998 1:16 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Is global warming real? You can find experts who say that it's a clear and present danger. You can also find others who insist that the whole issue isn't worth worrying about. Which of these groups should we believe? Jonathan Overpeck, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has some thoughts on this. First of all, he doesn't have a high level of trust for the opinions of politically motivated people "who are not climate change scientists themselves and therefore lack firsthand knowledge." Conversely, he would be inclined to trust what real climate scientists say. These men and women, he points out, have actually done the research. And more often than not, he adds, they've had their work published, which means it has been reviewed by other knowledgeable scientists. And, according to Overpeck, among these specialists, "There is a strong consensus that global warming is taking place." So the guys who know best say, yes, global warming is taking place. Recently, Overpeck and an international team of 20 researchers worked together to summarize what we know about the climate changes that have taken place in the past 400 years. Their tools included analyzing and reviewing the growth of tree rings, examining lake sediments, studying written records and checking gas bubbles trapped inside glaciers.

What should I look for when I shop for chicken?
Whatever city we're in, whether it's on the East Coast, or Puerto Rico, or even London or Moscow or Tokyo, Frank visits supermarkets the way other people visit museums or monuments. He notices the following kinds of things himself and would recommend that you do also when selecting chicken. Give the package a little squeeze. Are there signs of ice along wings, backs, or edges? Some chicken producers blast their birds with air as cold as - 40F, but Perdue never does. Freezing causes a breakdown in protein, loss of natural juices, and could reduce tenderness. Also, when you cook a frozen bird, the bones and nearby, meat may turn an unappetizing dark color. Look at the thickness of the meat in proportion to the bone. If, for example, the breast looks scrawny, you're paying a lot for bone rather than meat.

In January 1952 at the Boston Poultry Show, a few people met informally and organized a committee to discuss the possible formation of a poultry historical organization. In June of 1952 this committee met in New York City and organized the American Poultry Historical Society (APHS). It was subsequently incorporated under Illinois laws as a non-profit organization. The stated purpose of the APHS was to find, collect, and preserve records, printed materials, and other objects connected with the development of the poultry industry in America, to make available its great history to this and future generations, and to recognize and honor persons for outstanding achievement or leadership in the industry. To carry out the objectives of the Society, the following program was developed:
  • Obtain valuable historical objects and pictures and assure their permanent protection in appropriate archives.
  • Provide facilities for the suitable display and preservation of all historical material obtained.

Via Krempasky HTML PDF In general, they advocate broad reform of campaign finance rules in response to new technology, much of which cannot be done without Congress. Fine, whatever. But when it comes to bloggers, watch out: Bloggers have "democratized' journalism, and a coalition of bloggers has demanded the same wholesale exemption from the federal campaign finance laws that is currently provided to so-called mainstream media. That exemption allows traditional journalists to fully communicate and coordinate with candidates, online or offline, and then spend, through their corporate employers, unlimited amounts of money publishing whatever news or commentary they please, favorable or unfavorable, fair or unfair, in any distribution channel: TV, radio, newspapers, magazines or the Internet. The bloggers are correct about the broad scope of this exemption: the news media can interview candidates, get leaked stories from them about their opponents, hold editorial board meetings with them, endorse them and even follow them around all day long if they are so inclined, none of which is subject to regulation by the FEC, regardless of how much money they spend. On its face, the bloggers' request for rights equal to those of mainstream media seems reasonable. . . .

Dustin Bratcher/Times-New photo Perdue introduces program to promote healthier life styles
The Perdue Chicken Cromwell plant earned a personal visit from Frank and Mitzi Perdue last Friday after winning the company’s Health Improvement Incentive Award for a new pilot program that is designed to help its employees lead healthier life styles. Called the Health Improvement Program or HIP, it was designed by Dr. Robert Merill, the chief medical officer for Perdue, to focus on the two main health risks of a particular patient. Fourth-graders sample farm life For two days last week, Darren Luttrell’s Olaton farm was turned into an outdoor classroom for the eighth annual Youth Agriculture Days. Over 600 fourth-grade students from the county’s six elementary schools — Wayland Alexander, Beaver Dam, Southern, Western, Horse Branch and Fordsville — spent Wednesday and Thursday learning about farm equipment to livestock nutrition.

On the witness stand Creek admitted that he drove Paul Shephard and Clay Gaither to set several of the vacant home fires and the building supply business but never lit any of the fires himself. Times-News photo Coleman calls Creek’s testimony ‘powerful’:Ex-Beaver Dam firefighters plead guilty to 20 years
Shortly before 3 p.m. last Wednesday, two former Beaver Dam firefighters opted for a plea agreement instead of going forward with their arson trial. While the trial was in recess for lunch, John Clay Gaither, 21, and Paul Willis Shephard, 26, decided to hear a plea offer from Commonwealth Attorney Tim Coleman. The pleas came after Aaron Creek, 21, testified that he drove the defendants to several vacant homes so they could burn them and wait to be paged for the fire alarms. “It was just to give us something to do on a boring night, when there was nothing going on,” Creek said while referring to a vacant home fire on Liberty Road set on Dec. 27, 2003. “What firefighter wouldn’t want to fight a structure fire?” Hunsaker blasts state’s money allotment For some county officials in some Kentucky counties it’s time for sitting back and soaking up the latest and extravagant handouts from the Kentucky General Assembly. Not so in Ohio County. Judge-Executive Wayne Hunsaker is sitting back wondering how the short end of the stick got even shorter. “I simply don’t understand it,” Hunsaker lamented this week. “We, in Ohio County, are as much in need of state support as any other county and we end up with what amounts to little more than the leftovers.”
