An annotation to his diary says, "This portrait of Pepys records his likeness at the age of 29 in an ‘Indian gown’ he hired for the occasion. He had already commissioned a portrait of his wife Elizabeth from the same artist and the painting took five separate sittings from the life."

Click for enlarged image. Samuel Pepys (pronounced "peeps) 1633-1703, is best remembered today by his remarkable biography of the Restoration Era during the reign of King Charles II. He is regarded in maritime circles as one of Britain’s ablest naval administrators. During his 30 year tenure at the Admiralty, Pepys brought the Royal Navy to peak performance, paving the way for great victories in later years.
In 1660 Pepys was appointed to the Naval Board as a patron to the Earl of Sandwich. Because of his exceptional organizational skills and his success at eliminating graft, he soon became an advisor to the Lord high Admiral, the future King James II. During the 2nd Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667, he organized the supply system which kept the navy in fighting trim. When James resigned in 1673, Charles II took personal control of the navy, and appointed Pepys Secretary to the Admiralty Board. With the king’s backing, he began a series of reforms, including the introduction of examinations, standardizing ship types, the provision of officer’s pensions, and payments to sailors’ widows. In his attempt to eliminate corruption, Pepys made few friends. In 1679 he was falsely accused of treason and sent to the Tower of London.

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Previous Politics is hurting primary education in Kenya February 06, Samuel Pepys learns Latin – and nothing but Latin The Internet is paying quite a bit of attention to Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), now that you can read his diary on line. So around now was a good time for a new Pepys biography, and Claire Tomalin's Samuel Pepys: The Unequalled Self has attracted further attention to Pepys. Today I bought it in paperback. Here (pp. 30-31) is one of the more striking passages concerning Pepys' schooling, which took place during the time of the English Civil War: I guess that in all sorts of places around the world of now, there must be young people experiencing something similar, but this time it is English that is to them what Latin was to young Sam Pepys. English now being the official public language of large tracts of the world. There is something more about Pepys' education here Posted by Brian Micklethwait at 09:01 PM

Comments Brian, have you read anything about Montaigne yet? Latin was actually his first language his father hired a tutor to speak to him only in Latin from the time he was small, and the family and servants followed along. He didn't learn French until he was in school.

Karirnya kemudian bertambah menjadi Sekretaris Raja Charles II hingga meninggal dan James II of England naik tahta.

Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) maintained a detailed daily diary for 10 years, covering 1659 to 1669. The diary, written in code, is the most extensive source of information on "The Restoration" in England. Because Pepys was an up-and-coming young civil servant, he was in a position to record a number of historical events with an insider's view. Pepys is considered to be the first great modern bureaucrat, and was the founder of the professional navy in England. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) gave up teaching to become a hack writer for Gentleman's Magazine . He then went on to start his own his own periodical

The son of a tailor, Pepys was born in London February 23, 1633. After graduation from Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, he worked as a secretary for a relative, Admiral Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich. In 1660 Montagu had him appointed a clerk in the navy office. By diligent application he advanced himself rapidly, becoming one of the key people in that office. In 1673 Charles II made Pepys secretary of the admiralty, a post in which he worked effectively to strengthen the navy. In 1679 he became a member of Parliament. That year he was accused of being a Roman Catholic and of passing naval secrets to the French; after being briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London, he was released and the charges dropped. Pepys was chosen president of the Royal Society in 1684 and was again named secretary of the admiralty. When James II came to the throne in 1685, Pepys continued in his post but retired after James was deposed (1688). Pepys died May 26, 1703, in London.
