Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Pepys, Samuel (1633-1703), English diarist and civil servant, who kept one of the most candid, self-revealing diaries known, and who in his official capacity helped to give Britain one of the strongest navies in the world. The son of a tailor, Pepys was born in London February 23, 1633. After graduation from Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, he worked as a secretary for a relative, Admiral Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich. In 1660 Montagu had him appointed a clerk in the navy office. By diligent application he advanced himself rapidly, becoming one of the key people in that office. In 1673 Charles II made Pepys secretary of the admiralty, a post in which he worked effectively to strengthen the navy. In 1679 he became a member of Parliament. That year he was accused of being a Roman Catholic and of passing naval secrets to the French; after being briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London, he was released and the charges dropped. Pepys was chosen president of the Royal Society in 1684 and was again named secretary of the admiralty. When James II came to the throne in 1685, Pepys continued in his post but retired after James was deposed (1688). Pepys died May 26, 1703, in London.

Name: Samuel Pepys Birth Date: February 23, 1633 Death Date: May 26, 1703 Place of Birth: London, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: writer Samuel Pepys Main Biography The English diarist and public official Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) kept a diary that provides a graphic account of English social life and conditions during the early period of the Restoration. Samuel Pepys was born on Feb. 23, 1633, in London. His father was a tailor. Pepys was sent to school first at Huntingdon and later to St. Paul's in London. In June 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, but he transferred to Magdalene College the following October and graduated in 1653. In 1655 Pepys married Elizabeth St. Michel, the young daughter of a Huguenot exile. The couple was apparently supported at first by Pepys's cousin Sir Edward Montagu, later the Earl of Sandwich, whose service Pepys entered. In 1660 Pepys accompanied Montagu as secretary on the voyage that returned Charles II to England. That same year Pepys was appointed clerk of the acts at the Navy Office. This appointment was significant because Pepys was to serve the navy in some capacity for the greater part of his.....

Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) is famous for the frank and detailed diaries he kept. A BBC History page puts it this way:
Do you want to know what people ate and drank in Restoration London? Or what they wore and how they amused themselves? Apply to S. Pepys. He was a serious, career-minded civil servant for most of the working day, but as soon as his duties were done - and sometimes sooner - he had fun. Providentially for us, he wrote it all down.
Well, best news: a Samuel Pepys blog has appeared. This should be very fine. Related Mirabilis.ca entry:

Illustration from: Memoires Relating to the State of the Royal Navy of England. Samuel Pepys, [London: s.n.], 1690
23 June - 29 August 2003 The Library has mounted a small display from its collections to commemorate the tercentenary of the death of the diarist Samuel Pepys (1633-1703). As Secretary of the Admiralty, Pepys was for a while one of the most important men in England. His diary, written between 1659 and 1669 and filling six volumes of frank shorthand, is famous for its vivid recreation of events, including the Plague of London (1665) and the Great Fire (1666), and for its wealth of detail. The items on display include a first edition of the Memoirs of Samuel Pepys and a 17th century treatise on tachygraphy shorthand, which was used by Pepys when writing his diary.

A year later, Dryden turned the table around and began writing in blank verse . This led him to the creation of his greatest play, All For Love (1678). After becoming Poet Laureate (1668) and historiographer royal (1670), Dryden produced a series of satires . His most successful was Absalom and Achitopel (1681). The same decade also withheld Religio laici The Hind and The Panther (1687), and William III (1688). Before his death at the age of 69, Dryden also wrote a few critical works.
Pepys, Samuel

Samuel Pepys was born in London, England and was educated at Cambridge. After going to university, Pepys joined the naval service and quickly moved up the ranks which soon brought him to the position as a secretary to the Admiralty (1672). After being accused of taking part in the Popish Plot (1679), Pepys was imprisoned and lost his position in office. In 1684, Pepys was reappointed to his position, and in that same year he also was appointed the president of the Royal Society. Pepys was never a major writer but from January 1, 1660, to May 31, 1669, he held a diary. His philosophy on everyday subjects and his paragraphs on the Great Plague (1665-1666), The Great Fire of London (1666), and the arrival of the Dutch fleet (1665-1667), have made his diary intriguing to many. Due to the diary being written in cipher, the diary was not decoded until 1825. Pepys died at the age of 76.

Samuel Pepys
Samuel Pepys, who lived from 1633-1703, was a naval administrator and diarist. He was most famous for his diary which he wrote between 1660-69. In his diary of 1668 he states that having visited Salisbury, he and his party wished to proceed to Bath. They started with a guide at about 6 o'clock and travelled across the Salisbury Plain until night, when by a happy mistake they were carried out of their way to a "town", which he later calls Chitterne. Here they found accommodation at an inn, "by and by to bed, glad of the mistake because it seems, had we gone on as we pretended, we could not have passed with our coach and must have lain on the plain all night." He relates that they found their beds, "good, but lousy: which made us merry". They then took the landlord of the inn as guide to Bath and arrived there without further trouble. The inn mentioned in his account is widely believed to have been the "White Hart", which stands on the junction of the B390 with the Tilshead road, in the village. It has been a private house for some years but it's name "White Hart House", serves as a reminder of it's origins and most famous customer. Back
