    Civil Disobedience - Part 3 of 3 Thoreau Reader: Home Civil Disobedience Intro He occupied one window, and I the other; and I saw that if one stayed there long, his principal business would be to look out the window. I had soon read all the tracts that were left there, and examined where former prisoners had broken out, and where a grate had been sawed off, and heard the history of the various occupants of that room; for I found that even here there was a history and a gossip which never circulated beyond the walls of the jail. Probably this is the only house in the town where verses are composed, which are afterward printed in a circular form, but not published. I was shown quite a long list of verses which were composed by some young men who had been detected in an attempt to escape, who avenged themselves by singing them. I pumped my fellow-prisoner as dry as I could, for fear I should never see him again; but at length he showed me which was my bed, and left me to blow out the lamp. It was like travelling into a far country, such as I had never expected to behold, to lie there for one night. It seemed to me that I never had heard the town-clock strike before, nor the evening sounds of the village; for we slept with the windows open, which were inside the grating. It was to see my native village in the light of the Middle Ages, and our Concord was turned into a Rhine stream, and visions of knights and castles passed before me. They were the voices of old burghers that I heard in the streets. I was an involuntary spectator and auditor of whatever was done and said in the kitchen of the adjacent village-inn—a wholly new and rare experience to me. It was a closer view of my native town.

    Italian Literature
    Origins and Development The modern language of Italy is naturally derived from Latin, a continuation and development of the Latin actually spoken among the inhabitants of the peninsula after the downfall of the Roman Empire. It is still disputed how far this spoken Latin was identical with the classical literary language of Rome, the Latinus togatus, and how far it was a merely popular tongue, the sermo rusticus. Crusades and through commerce; the Saracenic In the "De Vulgari Eloquentia" (i, 10-16), Dante speaks of the "many discordant varieties of the Italian vernacular", and rejects them all in favour of the "illustrious, cardinal, courtly, and curial vernacular in Italy", the standard and ideal national language, "which belongs to every city of Italy, and seems to belong to none, and by which all the municipal dialects of the Italians are measured, weighed and compared". These dialects fall into three groups:
    • (1) Ligurian, Piedmontese, Lombard and Emilian, and Sardinian, which form a Gallo-Italian group apart from the vernacular of the rest of the peninsula;
    • (2) Venetian, Corsican, Sicilian, Neapolitan, Umbrian, and the dialects of the Marches and of Rome, which, though diverging from true Italian, form one system with it;

    Introduzione ai Promessi Sposi
    Alessandro Manzoni inizia a scrivere I Promessi Sposi il 24 aprile 1821, mentre si trova con la famiglia nella bella villa di Brusuglio, immersa nella campagna, a pochi chilometri da Milano. Sono tempi difficili: in città la polizia austriaca sta arrestando, uno a uno, i patrioti affiliati alla società segreta della Carboneria. L'anno prima è stato arrestato Pietro Maroncelli e ora sono in corso i processi nei quali sono anche implicati i collaboratori del Conciliatore , tra cui il direttore del giornale, Silvio Pellico (1789-1854).
    Molti di loro sono amici e conoscenti di Manzoni che spera, nel suo rifugio, di non essere coinvolto né chiamato a subire estenuanti interrogatori.
    Ha con sé alcuni libri: le Storie milanesi di Giuseppe Ripamonti (1573-1643) e il saggio di Melchiorre Gioia (1767-1829) Sul commercio di commestibili e caro prezzo del vitto , dove legge il passo di una grida (legge emanata dal Governatore di Milano, chiamata così perché veniva gridata nelle strade da pubblici ufficiali, al fine di informare i cittadini, spesso analfabeti) del Seicento, che commina pene severe a chi impedisca la celebrazione di un matrimonio.
    Nell'arco di quaranta giorni Manzoni stende di getto l'introduzione e i primi due capitoli del romanzo che, in realtà, sta enucleando nella mente da alcuni anni e che rappresenta una vera e propria sfida, per la sua novità formale e di contenuto. Ricostruire il processo di ideazione, stesura e revisione di questo capolavoro significa aprire anche uno spaccato sulla vita culturale dell'Ottocento e calarsi in quell'affascinante fase della cultura italiana che segue e sorregge le prime fasi del processo di unificazione nazionale.
