Quotations About / On: KISS Page: John B. Watson, the most influential child-rearing expert [of the 1920s], warned that doting mothers could retard the development of children,... Demonstrations of affection were therefore limited. "If you must, kiss them once on the forehead when they say goodnight. Shake hands with them in the morning."
(Sylvia Ann Hewitt (20th century), economist. A Lesser Life, ch. 11 (1986).)
More quotations from: Sylvia Ann Hewitt The kiss of the sun for pardon,
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.
More quotations from: Dorothy Frances Gurney When Wilson got upon his legs in those days he seems to have gone into a sort of trance, with all the peculiar illusions and delusions that belong to a pedagogue gone mashugga. He heard words giving three cheers; he saw them race across a blackboard like Mexicans pursued by the Polizei; he felt them rush up and kiss him. (H.L. (Henry Lewis) Mencken (1880-1956), U.S. journalist, critic. Originally published in the Smart Set (January 1921). The Vintage Mencken, ch. 20, p. 119, ed. Alistair Cooke, Vintage (1956).)

Coventry Patmore
Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore was born in Woodford, Essex,
to Peter George Patmore and Eliza Robertson. His father, a passionate and skilled writer who made his living by writing, editing and reviewing, educated his son and endorsed an unconventional upbringing (Sussman 13). Soon, however, young Patmore was forced to support himself with his own writing when accusations regarding railway shares exiled his parents from England and thus orphaned him.
Despite his struggles with poverty, Patmore managed to publish Poems in 1844 with the aid of his father. Though his work received mixed reviews, it caught the attention of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB), a group of English artistsamong them John Everett Millais William Holman Hunt , and Dante Gabriel Rossettiwho sought to reestablish the simplicity and charm of the medieval period (3). The PRB would eventually award Patmore one star on their "List of Immortals." Only Jesus Christ received four stars on this list. Among those sharing Patmore's one-star notability were Boccaccio, Raphael, Elizabeth Barrett Browning , and Alfred, Lord Tennyson

BOOKS on-line My childhood was a vision
Compensation

My childhood was a vision heavenly wrought;
High joys of which I sometimes dream, yet fail
To recollect sufficient to bewail,
And now for ever seek, came then unsought:
But thoughts denying feeling, every thought
Some buried feeling's ghost, a spirit pale,
Sprang up, and wordy nothings could prevail And juggle with my soul; since, better tought, The Christian's apprehension, light that solves Doubt without logic, rose faith that hope involves And joys, like stars, which, though they not illume This mortal night, have glory that dissolves And strikes to quick transparence all its gloom Compensation That nothing here may wants its praise Know, she who in her dress reveals A fine and modest taste, displays More loveliness than she conceals.

Biography PATMORE, COVENTRY KERSEY DIGHTON (1823-1896). —Poet, s. of Peter George P., also an author, b. at Woodford, Essex, was in the printed book department of the British Museum. He pub. Tamerton Church Tower (1853), and between 1854 and 1862 the four poems which, combined, form his masterpiece, The Angel in the House, a poetic celebration of married love. In 1864 he entered the Church of Rome. Thereafter he pub. The Unknown Eros (1877), Amelia (1878), and Rod, Root, and Flower (1895), meditations chiefly on religious subjects. His works are full of graceful and suggestive thought, but occasionally suffer from length and discursiveness. He was successful in business matters, and in character was energetic, masterful, and combative. He numbered Tennyson and Ruskin among his friends, was associated with the pre-Raphaelites, and was a contributor to their organ, the Germ.

    Abstract:
Emily Dickinson and her sister Susan read with interest Coventry Patmore's The Angel in the House . Susan even quoted lines from it in her obituary for Dickinson. Many of Dickinson's poems, in which the speaker is a newlywed bride are attempts to fill the lacuna of Patmore's verse novel in which the point of view is exclusively that of the groom. Dickinson also inventively responds to some of Patmore's metaphoric allusions, e.g. to cochineal and to Franklin's lost Arctic expedition. Among the poems treated are several of Dickinson's wife as well as several of her Arctic poems. Ladin, Jay, 1961-
