"The two great turning points in my life," Oscar Wilde wrote in De Profundis, "were when my father sent me to Oxford, and when society sent me to prison." At Oxford, Wilde, in Richard Ellmann's words, "created himself." Perhaps the most important influences on Wilde at Oxford were Walter Pater, John Addington Symonds, and John Ruskin. The Literae Humaniores or "Greats" program that Wilde studied at Oxford centered on the history, philosophy, and literature of ancient Greece, particularly the work of Plato but he did not limit himself to its requirements. Wilde was exposed at Oxford to most of the major intellectual controversies of the day. During Wilde's years at Oxford, the university was a site of considerable controversy. Within months of Wilde's matriculation in 1874, Walter Pater and the "Conclusion" to his Studies in the History of the Renaissance were being denounced from the pulpit as immoral, and a few years later attacks on Pater and Symonds, and on Aestheticism and Oxford Hellenism, including W. H. Mallock's The New Republic

After doing refugee relief work in France, she emigrated to the United States in 1941, where she taught at several universities including the New School for Social Research. Her major works include a study of the origins of totalitarianism, several volumes of essays on modern politics and political philosophy, and her controversial account of the Israeli trial of Adolf Eichmann in terms of 'the banality of evil'. Coleridge, Samuel Taylor (1772-1834) Having become religiously radicalized at Cambridge as a young man, Coleridge embarked on a difficult and turbulent career as writer, poet, and sometime philosopher. His travels in Germany in 1798-99 made him one of the first Englishmen to understand the idealist philosophical revolution, which he popularized once back in London. His aim was to defend an active role for the mind, imagination, and conscience, and he had an enormous influence both on his friend and contemporary Wordsworth with whom he issued the Romantic manifesto, Lyrical Ballads, and on the younger generation of Romantic poets who followed them.     Abstract:
      This essay discusses two eighteenth-century English literary fairy tales for children. The first, "The Dice Box," included by Horace Walpole in his six Hieroglyphic Tales (1785), written for the nine-year-old niece of a friend, probably in 1757, is unique, surreal in its nonsense, Rabelaisian with sophisticated sexual innuendo. In sharp contrast Jane Johnson's "A Very Pretty Story," the earliest known English fairy tale for children, written in 1744 and published for the first time in 2001 by the Bodleian Library, Oxford, who have recently acquired the manuscript, is decorous and benign, and was extemporized by a mother for her two small children. Both authors draw on French sources, particularly on Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy and, in Walpole's case, on Anthony Hamilton, and the article discusses the influence of these on eighteenth-century English writing.
