Walter Horatio Pater Walter Horatio Pater (1839-1894), English essayist and critic, born in London, and educated at the University of Oxford, where he spent most of his life. He concentrated on interpreting to his age the art and literature of the Renaissance, through historical novels, stories, and, mainly, essays. His attention to elaborate, exquisite phrasing reveals his preoccupation with perfecting prose style without neglecting depth of subject matter. Pater is remembered primarily as an innovator in aesthetics who celebrated the pleasurable effects of art on the viewer or reader. "Art for art's sake," a phrase taken from his Studies in the History of the Renaissance 1873), was Peter's credo and became a rallying cry for the aesthetic movement of the 1880s. His hedonist philosophy greatly influenced (his younger contemporary, the Irish-born writer Oscar Wilde. Pater is best known for his novel Marius the Epicurean (1885), a study of the "sensations and ideas" of a young 2nd-century Roman confronting Christianity. His other works include

Walter Pater (1839-1894) But as the alma mater of Water Pater, the in Canterbury can claim some credit for kickstarting the aesthetic movement in all its exotic, sensual and unhealthy glory. Not that Pater himself was the fey, swooning aesthete of popular imagination. As an Oxford undergraduate, Max Beerbohm was shocked to encounter a "small, thick, rock-faced man" with a military-looking moustache and dogskin gloves. "I nearly went down when they told me this was Pater," he remarked later. Pater is still worth reading not least for his magnificent prose. His Studies in the History of the Renaissance is almost unique in being an interesting book about Art History, while Marius the Epicurean

By the 1880s, Pater's criticism was well established among younger writers as exemplary of avant garde aesthetic attitudes. Pater, Walter (1839-1894)
page: The aesthetic of the important and influential Victorian critic Walter Pater reflected a homosexual sensibility. Among British prose writers of the Victorian era, Pater stands as the embodiment of stylistic elegance. His critical essaysranging widely over Classical, Renaissance, Romantic, and contemporary artists and writersare themselves literary works of the first order. William Butler Yeats called Pater's novel Marius the Epicurean (1885, rev. 1892) "the only great prose in modern English." Sponsor Message.
A close student of German philosophy (particularly the work of Hegel) and well read in the French writers of the period, Pater's criticism and fiction were highly cerebral, yet embraced the purely sensuous dimensions of art and life. From the 1870s through the 1890s, he was regarded by the reading public as a major theorist and practitioner of Aestheticism and Decadence. (Pater himself regarded this identification with some perplexity, though his influence on Oscar Wilde, for instance, was clear). His stylistic elegance and his dangerous ideas about art's autonomy from morality, combined with rumors of homosexuality at Oxford, where he taught, made Pater's name virtually synonymous with gay sensibility during the late nineteenth century. In 1876, speaking as a guardian of public morals, W. T. Courthope announced: "we repudiate the effeminate desires which Mr. Pater, the mouthpiece of our artistic 'culture,' would encourage in society."

Name: Walter Horatio Pater Birth Date: August 4, 1839 Death Date: July 30, 1894 Place of Birth: London, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: writer Walter Horatio Pater Main Biography The English author Walter Horatio Pater (1839-1894) was the most influential figure in the Esthetic movement of the late 19th century. His writings reveal a mind of sensibility and discrimination, embodying its judgments in carefully wrought prose. By the 1860s and 1870s the younger generation of British intellectuals was beginning to react against the excessive weight of moral criteria prevalent in critical judgments on the fine arts. Walter Pater led the way in this reaction by stressing the diversity of artistic experience and the need for flexibility in judgments. He directed critical attention to discrimination of the special and essential character of each work of art or artistic personality and to precise analysis of the effect each produces upon the individual. In effect, he developed refinement of critical response into a philosophy of life. Pater was born at Shadwell, East London, on Aug. 4, 1839. His father, a surgeon of Dutch descent, died when Walter was a child, an.....

In 1867 Pater became a lecturer at Brasenoe, establishing a name for himself. In the year of 1876, three years after the release of The Renaissance , Pater was involved in a satirical piece by W.H. Mallok entitled The New Republic Oscar Wilde His work had a certain appeal to it, an underlining meaning which was often seen as a belief in the beginning of spiritual life is a moment, an intense and wholly individual moment of experience. He was a strong believer in solipsistic premises, which state that each person must concentrate full attention on each moment as it passes, since that moment is all there is and all anyone has. These viewpoints demonstrated Pater's thoughts on life, allowing his readers to see life as he intended rather than a distorted point of view that has been manipulated by an organized religion. After resigning from his position at Brasenose, Pater moved back to London to live with his sisters, Hester Maria and Clara Ann, where he lived until his death on July 30th, 1894.
