The Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali and The Cloud of Unknowing : A Preliminary Step in Assessing the Ontological Accuracy of the Mystical Experience (1996)
Mark I. Vuletic
This paper was written for a seminar in mysticism taught by Neal Grossman at The University of Illinois at Chicago in Spring, 1996 Proponents of mysticism sometimes offer the alleged uniformity of mystical experiences across time, distance, and culture as evidence of the epistemological value of the insights into reality one supposedly acquires from having such an experience. Obviously, to assess the claim to its fullest extent would require a thorough examination of all representative mystical texts - far beyond the scope of a single paper - and a detailed consideration of several epistemological issues regarding criteria of evidence and parsimony. However, a preliminary step towards full assessment can be made through consideration of two representative mystical texts from as radically different cultural contexts as can be found, and a survey of some of the epistemological issues involved in assessing what kind of evidence, if any, they offer for the ontological accuracy of the mystical experience. This paper will attempt to offer just such a preliminary analysis. The first text I will consider is a collection of

Therefore, salvation is, first, freedom from sin and the sorrow which comes from sin, and then a divine and eternal well-being, wherein the soul partakes of the being, the wisdom and glory of God. Introduction
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are one of the six darshanas of Hindu or Vedic schools and, alongside the Bhagavad Gita and Hatha Yoga Pradipika , are a milestone in the history of Yoga . The book is a set of aphorisms , which are short, terse phrases designed to be easy to memorize. Though brief, the Yoga Sutras are an enormously influential work that is just as relevant for yoga philosophy and practice today as it was when it was written. To understand the work's title, it is necessary to consider the meanings of its two component words. The Sanskrit word Yoga , as used by Patanjali , refers to a state of mind where thoughts and feelings are held in check.

The Book of the Spiritual Man
An Interpretation By Charles Johnston Bengal Civil Service, Retired; Indian Civil Service, Sanskrit Prizeman; Dublin University, Sanskrit Prizeman
  • Introduction to Book 1 Book 1 Introduction to Book 2 Book 2 ... Book 4
  • INTRODUCTION TO BOOK I The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are in themselves exceedingly brief, less than ten pages of large type in the original. Yet they contain the essence of practical wisdom, set forth in admirable order and detail. The theme, if the present interpreter be right, is the great regeneration, the birth of the spiritual from the psychical man: the same theme which Paul so wisely and eloquently set forth in writing to his disciples in Corinth, the theme of all mystics in all lands. The teaching of the East is, that all these are true powers overlaid by false desires; that though in manifestation psychical, they are in essence spiritual; that the psychical man is the veil and prophecy of the spiritual man.

    Patanjali's Yoga Sutras Explained
Some variants of confusion may temper one' will. THIS EXPOSITION is centred on the ancient classic Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (its first three parts from 2nd century BC) and follows Swami Vivekananda's commentary [in Via ]. The Yoga Sutras is a text of ancient yoga, quite a milestone work, and an ancient Sanskrit primer of a sort. We would not let it go uncommented.
The sutras are very terse and need to be explained. And could solid, wise parts of it be formed to get even more culinary? If so it could very well pay to look into these matters.

In ancient times an Indian rishi Patanjali highlighted the principal stages of the ascent to spiritual heights, to the Primordial Consciousness. He distinguished eight major steps of this ascent: yama – niyama – asana – pranayama – pratyahara – dharana – dhyana – samadhi. However, since the first two of the above-mentioned steps are very similar and are supposed to be practiced simultaneously, it makes sense to regard them as one and view this system as a seven-step “octave”. Let us look at these steps. Yama and Niyama Asana Pranayama Pratyahara ... Samadhi

The Ancient Secret Sacred Yogic Sutras of Patanjali... How to Know God The origination of the word Yoga dates back thousands of years, and actually means "Union". This Union is a unification of your body, mind, emotions, and ego with the Divine Source of all existence. The great sage and master Avatar Patanjali was the founder and father of Yoga. He was considered to be a fully self-realized avatar, who had mastered the mind, the body, its senses, and even this physical world. He was also a profound knower of knowledge which made him an amazing philosopher and teacher of how to master your life. The Ancient Yoga Sutras of Patanjali date back more than 1500 years. In my experience they are the foundation and essential training manual for mastering the Mind and achieving Oneness with the Universe. In this world no one can give you health, happiness and wisdom, you have to achieve it. Yoga is one of the best ways to achieve it.
-Yogacharya Dr. Sushil Patanjali is a Linux-based version of Raja Yoga, a system of yoga that starts with the mind rather than the body. It is to be gradually understood over a period of time by reading through successive "sutras", or verses, that create mental references to abstract states of mind. According to this system of thought, as these states of mind are recognized, it gradually leads to increased liberation, and therefore to greater enlightenment. The greatest classical text from the yoga school of Indian philosophy are the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, thought to have been written in the second century BC. The threads are very concise, and outline with precision the main points. Yoga practice is considered complementary to the Sankhya philosophy, the goal being the "realization" in Spirit.
This psychological method of liberation is called "Raja" or "royal" yoga; "The Kingly Science of the Soul"; the 'Eight Steps' may be listed as follows:

    Patanjali
Codifier of the Yoga Sutras Codifying the Yoga Sutra : Patanjali codified, or compiled in a systematic way, the art and science of Yoga in the Yoga Sutras. The Yoga Sutras succinctly outlines the art and science of Yoga for Self-Realization. Nothing new was created with the Yoga Sutras , but rather the ancient practices were summarized in an extremely organized and terse way. While the Yoga Sutra itself is ancient, archaeological evidence and other texts suggest that the methods described in the Yoga Sutras were being practiced as early as 3000 BCE. Oral tradition states that the date may be even earlier. Dates : Scholars estimate that Patanjali lived some time between 400 BCE and 200 AD, though they are in disagreement about these dates. While the scholars debate the actual dates of Patanjali, oral tradition accounts for the apparent time differences by explaining that the name Patanjali is a surname, and is the name of a lineage and school of teachers, students, and sages, rather than being only one person. However, for convenience sake, Patanjali is spoken of as a single person, who might have been founder of the lineage. Although Patanjali is a surname of the lineage, there have also been several individuals with the name Patanjali, which may or may not have been related with the lineage relating to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Oral tradition : In addition, the Yoga traditions are historically oral traditions, and some say the Yoga Sutras were not written down for at least a couple hundred years after they were systematized by Patanjali. During that period it was the custom for the entirety of the Yoga Sutras to be memorized as a part of the practice. This type of learning is still done today by a few teachers and students, though many of them now do this as an intellectual study of Sanskrit, rather than as an aid to practice and direct experience.

    > Patanjali - The Foremost Guru of Yoga
It is one of India's typical paradoxes that the greatest book ever written on the spiritual aspect of Yoga also conceals any details about its author. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are only 196 terse aphorisms in number, but for over two and a half millennia they have been the ultimate authority on the subject. All the stranger therefore that we have no details about the author of this work of genius that has any historical certainty. In any case, India has always preferred mythical narrative over historical drudgery, and Patanjali has been fitted out with a sufficiently impressive myth.
Historically, we are aware that about 500 BCE, an unusually intelligent man named Patanjali codified into a text of brilliant compression the fundamental and vital principles of the practice of Yoga. He is also supposed to have been the man who wrote the first commentary on the famous Grammar of Panini, who was his guru. From the evidence available the two seem to have been different people sharing the same name, a common enough practice, with later commentators using a more distinguished predecessor's reputation to gild their particular lily. Traditionally, Patanjali is supposed to have written three important works; his commentary on the grammar called the Mahabhasya, a work on the ancient Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda, and the work he is most well known for, the Yoga Sutras.

When our children were young, my husband and I would occasionally summon up enough courage to take them out for dinner. As we stood outside the selected restaurant, one of us would stare down into their upturned innocent faces and remind them, to “be good” or we would leave the restaurant. This warning was only mildly successful until one day my husband reasoned out a more effective approach. He explained and I agreed that telling the children to “be good” was just too vague; we needed to be specific. With this revelation in mind, on our next outing we stopped before entering a restaurant and reminded them of these specifics, “Stay in your chair; don’t throw food, and do not yell. If you do any of these things, one of us will take you out of the restaurant at once.”
We gave them clear guidelines and immediate consequences to stepping over the line. We had stumbled upon a very effective technique and it worked like a charm. Each child tested the limit once, was quickly taken out, and after a very short time we had restaurant-capable children.
Similarly, we as students of yoga are interested in learning the guidelines (discipline) and welcome the consequences (health and self-awareness) that come with the practices of yoga. Interesting, the author of the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali, actually presents an approach to the study of yoga which is
