Before the soul can see,
the harmony within must be attained,
and fleshly eyes be rendered blind
to all illusion. Before the soul can hear,
the image (Man)
has to become as deaf
to roarings as to whispers,
to cries of bellowing elephants as to the silvery buzzing of the golden fire-fly. Before the soul can comprehend and may remember, she must unto the silent speaker be united, just as the form to which the clay is modelled is first united with the potter's mind. For then the soul will hear, and will remember. And then to the inner ear will speak the voice of silence. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
(an overview)
by Octavian Sarbatoare (BA Usyd)
About Yoga Sutras and its author
Patanjali , the author of the Yoga Sutras treatise is largely believed to have lived around year 200 B.C.E. Based on the comparison of the Sanskrit style of text, scholars like Dasgupta, Liebich, Garbe identify the author of YS to be the same Patanjali , the grammarian, author of Mahabhasya , a treatise on grammar. Other scholars like Woods and Jacobi believe that there was another Patanjali who has written the work around the 5th c. C.E or later. The issue of Buddhist influence and interpolation is also considered by scholars like Keith A. B. and Hauer. (Eliade,1954, p. 363). The best known first English versions were done by Woods (The Yoga system of Patanjali , Harvard Oriental Series, 1914) and Rama Prasada Patanjali ,s Yoga Sutras , Allahabad, 1910). ( Ibid ., p. 364).
YS , usually translated as Yoga Aphorisms , set the foundation of Raja Yoga , the 'Royal Yoga', a classical of Yoga systems. The well-known work is usually addressed as Ashtanga Yoga , the Yoga of eight steps/ limbs (Skr.

An insight vision of by Gurjant Singh Virk. 1.1; Discipline is the basis of Yoga. Insight vision of Step /1/:- Right from its very commencement, the practice of Yoga requires the self-discipline. It is not possible to practice Yoga without firm foundation of discipline. The beginning, in fact, is made in yoga, when a discipline starts learning the postures of control of body organs leading to self-discipline. After the discipline start learning to make static posture of body, he begins to experience that thoughts of his mind have started getting into a static state. It is said by the Maharishi Patanjali that Yoga scripture is not a subject, which falls under the purview of reading or learning. This subject can neither be learned nor understood nor taught with logic or information or argument knowledge or blind belief... Read more . Language: English

Extract fron the Sutras
From the Jacket The present work is the first complete English translation of a highly significant historical find, an unknown early Sanskrit sub-commentary purporting to be by Sankara, on the Yoga sutras of Patanjali. It is judged to be a genuine work of Sankara, India's greatest riligious and philosophical genius and architect of the non-dual Vedanta school. This is a sub-commentary (vivarana) to the terse exposition of Patanjali by Vyasa, the earliest surviving classic of the Yoga school. That school differs from Sankara's Vedanta on several philosophical points, but he regarded it as authoritative on meditation practice, which is central to both schools. The existence of this vivarana is of great importance to the study and reappraisal of Sankara's thought and teaching. It is now clear that the many references in Sankara's works to Yoga practice are not mere concessions to accepted ideas of the time, but that it was central to his practice.

Yoga Sutra
Yoga as a system of thought and practice has a primary reference to the philosophical system that flows from the teachings of the ancient Indian Yoga philosopher, Patanjali Maharishi Patanjali is believed to have compiled his Yoga Sutra around the 3rd or 4th century BC but archeological evidences and the study of ancient scriptures suggest that yoga was practiced in ancient India as early as 3000 BC.
In spite of the Yoga Sutra being by far the most definitive text on the philosophy of classical yoga, very little is known about Patanjali himself. In fact, the identity of this sage scholar is still being debated in academic circles. All that one might say about him is that he was a great philosopher and grammarian. Some also believe him to have been a physician and attribute a certain medical work to him. But even if such a medical treatise did exist, it has been lost to us through the passage of time. Scholars tentatively put his time somewhere around three centuries before Christ and though the date of the Yoga Sutra 's composition is also a controversial issue, place it within that broad time frame.

T he yoga sutra-s are considered the most authoritative of yoga texts. Authored by Patanjali, this work presents all the concepts of yoga in 195 aphorisms. Such is the respect given to this work that all great yogi-s acknowledged this work when they presented their own teaching. There is a popular saying that "what is not mentioned in the yoga sutra-s is either not yoga, or probably not important at all". A n understanding of the yoga sutra-s is necessary for any serious student of yoga. To help the many yoga enthusiasts of the modern world, we would like to share the teachings of the yoga sutra through this section. In this section we offer one sutra every week (updated every saturday), with its translation by TKV Deskachar. The section will also feature an audio recital of the yoga sutra by Mekhala Desikachar. This work is extracted from the recently released CDROM "Patanjali's Yogasutra: An Exploration".

What are the Yoga Sutras and who is Patanjali?
Over fifty different English translations of the Yoga Sutras are extant, standing as a human testament to how Universal Truth is celebrated in terms of a rich diversity. Rather than the common and external type of knowledge (emanating from book knowledge), the following translation and commentary are a result of an intimate familiarity and direct experience both with an authentic yogic tradition and with western culture, psychology, and language that has been refined, tested in fire, and integrated for over thirty five years of intense practice (sadhana). This work is dedicated toward revealing the universal message of authentic yoga that the sage, Patanjali, first wrote down approximately 2000 years ago. Patanjali is not the inventor of yoga, but rather yoga's most popularly known scribe. What has become known simply as the "Yoga Sutras

Simply by choosing the size of these particles one can alter properties such as the electronic absorption and emission spectra, vibrational spectrum, or the melting temperature. The origin of these behaviors arises from quantum confinement effects - the particle's size approaches the characteristic length scale of the electronic wavefunction in this regime. For this reason, nanocrystals are often referred to as quantum dots. Individual nanocrystals may also be constituent components of an ensemble. In the event the ensemble itself has periodicity in one or more dimensions, the ensemble is then a lattice of lattices - i.e. a superlattice. These ensembles of nanocrystals may be disordered films, have different periodicities about different axes, or even form structures with periodicity at the wavelength of visible light. Order may be present on multiple length scales. Since these systems are neither as disordered as typical liquids nor as highly ordered as typical bulk solids, the hierarchical spatial ordering can lead to novel interparticle interactions and dynamics.
