For example, "In Appendix B [1940 report] is a reprint of the general orders issued by General Howe, during the period when the British army was in Halifax between its withdrawal from Boston in March, 1776, and its departure for New York in June of that year." Francis Parkman was born to wealth in Boston, Mass., on Sept. 16, 1823. As an undergraduate at Harvard, he had the advantage of study with the historian Jared Sparks, who gave Parkman his first reading list on the "Old French War." Through letters of introduction to other scholars, Sparks eased the young man's path. While still a sophomore (he graduated in 1844), Parkman planned a history of the "Old French War" which would end with England's conquest of Canada. An older contemporary historian, George Bancroft, who had gone over some of the ground later traversed by Parkman, provided a framework for his more gifted successor. James Fenimore Cooper's "Leather-Stocking Tales" and Sir Walter Scott's "Waverley Novels" were spurs to Parkman's ambition to write a great history on a North American theme. Vassall Morton ( 1856 ). A novel.
The Book of Roses (1866). A subject on which Parkman was an expert.

Harvard in 1726: The First Prospect of an American College

A Prospect of the Colledges in Cambridge in New England
Engraving attributed to John Harris after William Burgis, 1726

First state, with hand coloring Image View Options Small Large Images from the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Not to be reproduced without permission. William Burgis's view of Harvard College in 1726 was the first engraving to focus on an American college. Of the three buildings portrayed in the engraving, only one, Massachusetts Hall, survives today. A serendipitous discovery A Prospect of the Colledges in Cambridge in New England has shaped the modern mental image of higher education in colonial America, yet the Massachusetts Historical Society's copy, the only one extant, was discovered by accident. In 1795, the Society received an uncolored 1743 version of the engraving (please see the online display ) that was mounted on a wooden panel. By 1880, the board had begun to warp. In order to protect the engraving against damage, a member of the Society removed it and underneath discovered the handsome, hand-colored, and previously unknown first state of the image, painted by William Burgis in the mid 1720s and then engraved, probably in England, by John Harris. An advertisement for the engravingnow known familiarly as the Burgis Viewin the Boston News Letter of 26 July 1726 dates the work.

The knowledge of wilderness life and American Indian culture he gained on these trips served as a basis for much of his later work. Parkman wrote both histories and historical novels. Though he suffered from poor eyesight and other health problems in later years, he kept working. Parkman produced articles and a horticultural treatise, and taught for a year at Harvard. Though notable for his wide-ranging interests, Parkman gained a lasting reputation as one of America's foremost historians.
