American historian whose works include The California and Oregon Trail Encyclopedia Parkman, Francis, 1823–93, American historian, b. Boston. In 1846, Parkman started a journey along the Oregon Trail to improve his health and study the Native Americans. On his return to Boston he collapsed physically and moved to Brattleboro, Vt. There Parkman dictated to his cousin The Oregon Trail, published in book form as The California and Oregon Trail (1849); the shorter title was resumed in later editions. Despite ill health, he labored on his History of the Conspiracy of Pontiac (1851) and wrote an unsuccessful novel, Vassall Morton (1856). Following a trip to Paris in 1858 to seek medical aid, he was for several years unable to continue his historical researches. He took up the study of horticulture and became an expert in the field. In 1866, The Book of Roses was published, and from 1871 to 1872 he was professor of horticulture at Harvard. He eventually resumed his studies of the history of Canada and the early Northwest, publishing

[Letter] 1890 November 5, Jamaica Plain, Mass. [to] Charles Brodhead / F. Parkman [Francis Parkman]. Parkman, Francis, 1823-1893. 1890 November 5. [1] leaf. 18 X 22 cm. folded to 18 X 11 cm. The letter is written on Jamaica Plain/ Mass. letterhead. See also another letter in the collection referencing the engraving from Parkman; the unnamed recipient may also be Brodhead. Parkman thanks Brodhead for sending the Niagara engraving and the "curious account" of the Old Sun Inn. Stating that his books are all in Boston, he cannot recollect the Hennepin engraving exaclty, but contends that the maker of the engraving "must have seen the Hennepin picture which was not published before 1683." The description accompanying Brodhead's engraving, however, is free from Hennepin's "gross exaggeration of measurement." Charles Brodhead was a student at Lehigh where he presented a thesis for graduation; he became instrumental in the development of south Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the 1850s. Parkman published several volumes about French and English exploration of North America with attention to New York state and relations to Native American tribes, as well as the experiences of settlers on the Oregon Trail. Francis Parkman
Excerpted from White on Red , Eds. Black, Nancy B. and Bette S. Wiedman, New York; Kennikat Press, 1976. Introduction: As a Harvard undergraduate, Francis Parkman had already decided on his life's worka history of the French, British and Indians in America. In the summer of 1845 he traveled west with a friend; among Pawnees and Sioux, he hoped to gather firsthand impressions for his history. In 1849 he published The Oregon Trail , an account of this trip based on his journals. Despite a lifetime of physical sufferingnervous ailments, lameness, increasing blindnessParkman persisted in his task, turning out eight volumes of his history, a book on rose culture, and a novel. He was professor of horticulture at Harvard and a founder of the Archaeological Institute of America. By birth and education Parkman was a Boston Brahmin; his youthful arrogance and detachment kept him from fully expressing the pleasure he took in living among the Sioux. Marked in all of his work, even as early as The Oregon Trail , is a quality of unromantic pessimism. This book illustrates the strength of his objective description of Indian manners, his snobbism, and his attraction to wilderness scenes.
