Winston Company, [1939.] 187p. In 1812, Dann Ballard trades nine animal pelts for a pair of hobnailed boots, not realizing that they are of the type worn by British infantrymen. Later, when he and his companion, John Sanders, encounter George Rogers Clark on his historic march against the British at Kaskaskia, the boots cast suspicion on the two friends until they prove their patriotism. Mrs. Nolan stresses only the Kaskaskia episode of the Clark campaign, introducing Clark and his followers just prior to their entering the Illinois Territory, describing their brief stay at the ruins of Fort Massac, their troubles in navigating the old Massac Trail northward, and the taking of Fort Gage at Kaskaskia. This novel presents a favorable image of John Sanders and a logical explanation for the sequence of incidents which casts suspicion on his character and causes many historians to question his loyalty. Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Text by Elizabeth Barret Browning (1806-1861)
Music by Edward Elgar How he sleepeth! Vision unto vision calleth,
While the young child dreameth on. Fair, O dreamer, thee befalleth With the glory thou hast won! Darker wert thou in the garden, Yestermorn, by summer sun. We should see the spirits rising Round thee, - were the clouds away. 'Tis the child-heart draws them, singing In the silent-seeming clay - Singing! - Stars that seem the mutest, Go in music, music all the day. Softly! softly! make no noises! Now he lieth still and dumb - Now he hears the angels' voices Folding silence in the room - Now he muses deep the meaning Of the Heav'nwords as they come. He is harmless - we are sinful, We are troubled - he at ease: From his slumber, virtue winful Floweth outward with increase - Dare not bless him! but be blesséd by his peace

Search COMMENT Mahmut Ozan Edward Tashji Sam Weems Others Ruth Rosen of The San Francisco Chronicle wrote the classic case of a "rubber stamp" article of genocide enthusiasts on December 15, 2003, to be found in these archives
Let's take a look at what this champion of objectivity had to say. "The Hidden Holocaust" Already her title gives away her ignorance. There is nothing "hidden" about the so-called Armenian "genocide." Run a search on the Internet, and see if you don't get countless hits. Go to the bookstore or library, and see if there aren't numerous books. Ask most people on the street if they haven't heard of the "Armenian Genocide," and see what they have to say. Yet, zealous apologists as Ruth Rosen continue to insist this episode of history is somehow "hidden" or "forgotten." (Such a notion must play up the sympathy value, I suppose.) The Armenian Diaspora has spread itself too fully throughout the world, and members of its traditionally merchant class have too much money to finance their identity-nourishing obsession. This is why we have countries such as Slovakia (in December 2004) adding their names to the growing list of resolutions recognizing these events as a genocide. There is no reason for Slovakia to care, unless there is a confirmed group of Armenians in their midst, throwing lots of money at their politicians, already brainwashed through centuries of "Terrible Turk" indoctrination. The Slovakian politicians only listen to what the Armenians have to say, and don't know anything about the true history. What's worse, they don't care to do any true research. Not unlike Ruth Rosen.
