Gilbert Parker (1862-1932)
Reunited
When you and I have play'd the little hour,
Have seen the tall subaltern Life to Death
Yield up his sword; and, smiling, draw the breath,
The first long breath of freedom; when the flower
Of Recompense hath flutter'd to our feet,
As to an actor's; and, the curtain down,
We turn to face each other all alone
Alone, we two, who never yet did meet,
Alone, and absolute, and free: O then,
O then, most dear, how shall be told the tale?
Clasp'd hands, press'd lips, and so clasp'd hands again;
No words. But as the proud wind fills the sail,
My love to yours shall reach, then one deep moan
Of joy, and then our infinite. Alone.
Art's Use
Art's use! what is it but to touch the springs
Of nature? But to hold a torch up for
Humanity in Life's large corridor,
To guide the feet of peasants and of kings!
What is it but to carry union through
Thoughts alien to thoughts kindred, and to merge
The lines of colour that should not diverge,
And give the sun a window to shine through!
What is it but to make the world have heed
For what its dull eyes else would hardly scan!

Included here are all of the sonnets in English from A Century of Canadian Sonnets as well as links to sonnets in Representative Poetry On-Line and transcriptions of material from the Early Canadiana website. Many thanks to Professors D. M. R. Bentley of Canadian Poetry and Ian Lancashire of Representative Poetry On-Line for their helpful websites and advice. From A New Dimension: Notes on the Ecology of Canadian Poetry by D. M. R. Bentley In an Old Barn thus stand in a continuity which stretches back to the heroic couplets of Mackay's Quebec Hill and Goldsmith's The Rising Village and forward well into the present century, to the vignettes of habitant life cast in sonnet form that comprise F. O. Call's Homespun volume of 1926 and to the rhymed couplets of Leo Cox's depiction of the village of 'St. Pol', Quebec." "...[F]ixed forms such as the sonnet, which Karl Shapiro describes interestingly enough, as an "un-American activity" have appealed to some Canadian poets, including the majority of the 'Confederation' and McGill groups, because their use implied an alignment and continuity with the English and European traditions. " From The Poet-Impressionist: Some Landscapes by Archibald Lampman by Anne Compton "On the space framed by the sonnet form, he [Lampman] deftly and quickly strokes in the sense-data. In longer, more discursive poems such as 'The Frogs,' he is less of an impressionist. The sonnet and the short lyric were well suited to the paradox of impressionism-the arrest of the fleeting moment."

Gilbert Parker was born on the 23rd of November 1862 at Camdem East, Addington Ontario, the son of Captain J. Parker, R.A. He was educated at Ottawo, then later, at Trinity University in Toronto. He went to Australia in 1886, and became associateeditor of the Sydney Morning Herald for a while. He became well travelled, venturing around the Pacific and then on to northern Canada. In the early 1890's he began to make a growing reputation in London as a writer of romantic fiction. Often thought of as the best of his novels are those in which he first took, for his subject, the history and life of the French Canadians; and his permanent literary reputation rests on the fine quality, descriptive and dramatic, of his Canadian stories.
Pierre and his People (1892) was shortly followed by Mrs Falchion The Trail of tile Sword When Valmond came to Pontiac

He soars and sings,
Wake to your work,
The Matin rings!
Praise God for work! Noon-tide is near,
The board is spread;
Thanks be to Him
Who giveth bread!
Praise God for bread! Sinks to his sleep
The pilgrim Sun, Homeward to rest, The day is done!
Chapter I
High Alleluia! All the young Virgins danced, Benedicamus Domino, Alleluia! Alleluia! It is for you and me, Alleluia! We dance like the young Virgins, Benedicamus Domino These were only two of many verses, but the eyes of the Governor lighted, for they were the spirit of the place; at the same time there was the ringing of bells in the towers of the cathedral, and around the Bishop's palace came people eager for the blessing of Laval, the Bishop of Quebec, poor, unhandsome, but a power always. Eh! courage, hurrah! Already at the bell one struts about, Eh! courage, hurrah! sa, sa! As he did so, the door opened and his orderly announced: Frontenac advanced to La Salle with outstretched hands, a warm smile on his distinguished face. La Salle's face lighted. He had come to urge Frontenac to found a fort at the head of Lake Ontario where the Iroquois could be held in check, and trade with the English and Dutch from the Upper Lakes could be stayed. La Salle had discovered the Ohio and the Illinois, and was eager to trade and explore, the latter most to him of all. Hunger for wealth never entered his head, and all his life proved his freedom from lust of gain.
