THE HUNGER FOR HAPPINESS
IT was a hot summer morning in one of the poorer streets of Boston. At one open door there stopped many women on their way to work, leaving their babies to be cared for during the day; and boys came there to play, and girls who brought their smaller brothers and sisters with them. At the door of this mission playroom there also arrived a little later a lady of gentle manner and smiling face, whose name was Alice Freeman Palmer. Every week she came, and this morning as she stepped into the front room, she found many young girls each holding a baby, and even babies without these young care-takers, awaiting her. She said, "What shall I talk to you about this morning?" It might be expected that on such a summer day they would think of the green fields, or the shaded woods, or the breezy seashore, that they had seen on some country day excursion. Or, perhaps, glimpses of children from favored homes might have reminded them of pretty gowns and gay dolls, and automobile rides with father and mother. But none of these themes was suggested. Up spoke a small, pale-faced, heavy-eyed child, with a great fat baby on her knee. "Tell us how to be happy!" It was hard then for this loving woman to meet the eyes of these over-weighted little creatures, almost in their infancy, bearing the heavy burdens of life. But the quick sympathy and wisdom that made her a trusted and beloved guide as president of a college, did not fail her here. Her mental vision easily reached to their horizon, taking in all the possibilities open to them. She was ready with these three rules for their pursuit of happiness. But first she required of them the promise that they would not skip a single day, for skipping would be fatal.

The large structure in the center is Memorial Hall. To the left is the Domestic Science Cottage, and to the right is Grew Hall (a dormitory), followed by the Industrial Building. B efore the construction of the Alice Freeman Palmer Building, PMI's first brick structure, four wood frame buildings were built on the campus. To accomplish this Charlotte Hawkins Brown, with the help of students, began a letter-writing project in 1902. The initial project netted five hundred dollars. With this money and other donations the first new building was erected in 1905. Memorial Hall was a three-story building with an inviting appearance. The first floor included classrooms, offices, a library, and a dining room. The second floor was the chapel and the third floor was the girls' dormitory. Its wide porch ran across the entire front of the building, which made it seem like home to students and teachers alike. The kitchen was located away from the main building. Memorial Hall brought about a genuine feeling of togetherness on the campus. It was the center of campus activity and it may be that in this accomplishment the true Palmer spirit was born. In 1909, Mary R. Grinnell, an early PMI supporter, sent funds to Brown for a new home economics building. When completed it was dedicated as the

12-12 TABLE of CONTENTS: Excerpt from Listening , by Sey Chessler SUSAN M. OSBORNE ... QUOTE by May Daly. Excerpt from Listening
by Sey Chessler "One morning about 20 years ago, my wife and I were arguing about whether or not I ever listened to her. It was one of those arguments that grow into passion and pain and, often, to me at least, into a kind of hysteria. This one became one of those that do not go away with the years.
"Suddenly, she threw something at me, and said: 'From now on you do the shopping, plan the meals, take care of the house, everything. I'm through!'
"I was standing in the kitchen looking at the shelves of food, at the oven, at the sink, at the refrigerator, at the cleaning utensils. At my wife. My reaction was orgasmic. Somewhere inside of me there was screaming, hurting, a volcanic gush of tears flooded my head and broke down over me. I shook and sobbed. I was terrified. No matter what, I knew I could not handle the burden. I could not do my job and be responsible for the entire household. How could I get through a day dealing with personnel, budgets, manuscripts, art departments, circulation statistics, phone calls, people agents, management, writers, and AT THE SAME TIME plan dinner for tonight and tomorrow night and breakfast and a dinner party Thursday night and shopping for it all and making sure the house is in good shape and the woman who cleans for us is there and on time and the laundry done and the children taken to the doctor, and the children taken care of?

WOMEN'S HISTORY
HISTORICAL MARKERS
The Governor's Commission Honoring the Achievements of Women has expanded the New York State historical marker program, started in 1926, to more accurately reflect women's contributions to history. Each county was asked to participate by nominating three historic local women who contributed to the community and deserved recognition. From these nominations, the Commission sponsored the creation and installation of a historical marker for every participating county. The markers are cast iron painted with the colors of the suffrage movement, purple and gold. The markers were dedicated and installed throughout the state during the fall of 1998. The below text is that of the new historical markers that honor New York State's women. Where possible, the marker text is followed by a brief description of each woman. ALBANY
