No. 1 Early Days:- His father, Thomas Keats, managed the stable at an inn known as the "Swan and Hoop" located in the north end of London, in the Hampstead area. Thomas was to marry his employer's daughter, Frances Jennings. Four children were born to the union: the oldest was John, born in 1795, followed along by George, Tom and Frances (Fanny). The parents died early; the father, as a result of a fall from a horse in 1804; the mother of tuberculosis in 1810. After their father's death, the mother having remarried, the Keats children moved in with grandmother Jennings. John Keats attended school at Enfield (in the general neighbourhood of the Jennings household) where he was befriended by the schoolmaster's son, Charles Cowden Clarke.

For those of you who are ambitious there are obscure works like "The Rump" and other plays that are rarely published and yet are worthy of being given a greater life than microfilm I recommend this ambitious project. Secondly, a black studies teacher (I believe at Harvard) just published a novel written by a black slave in the 1850s named Hannna Crafts. For those of you wishing to pursue it, the editor of this newly published book might hand over a photocopy of the manuscript to Project Gutenberg (after all as long as it doesn't have his editorial comments on it, he probably doesn't have any legal rights to keep it exclusively his). Thirdly, I picked up The Golden Treasury which is an anthology edited by Francis Turner Palgrave. He lived from 1824-1897. My edition was updated with a lot newere poetry added to it by C Day Lewis but the smaller collection under Francis Turner's editorial skills would be public domain material.

He wrote several vols. of poetry, including Visions of England (1881), and Amenophis (1892), which, though graceful and exhibiting much poetic feeling, were the work rather of a man of culture than of a poet. His great contribution to literature was his anthology, The Golden Treasury of Songs and Lyrics (1864), selected with marvellous insight and judgment. A second series showed these qualities in a less degree. He also pub. an anthology of sacred poetry.
