Japanese Fairy Tales
Author Yei Theodora Ozaki Categories Fantasy Fiction Reference Language English Published Excerpt r description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West. Then a storm came on, and the wonderful paper crane got damp, crumpled up, and fell into the sea. Sentaro fell with it. Very much frightened at the thought of being drowned, he cried out loudly to Jofuku to save him. He looked round, but there was no ship in sight. He swallowed a quantity of sea-water, which only increased his miserable plight. While he was thus struggling to keep himself afloat, he saw a monstrous shark swimming towards him. As it came nearer it opened its huge mouth ready to devour him. Sentaro was all but paralyzed with fear now that he felt his end so near, and screamed out as loudly as ever he could to Jofuku to come and rescue him. Lo, and behold, Sentaro was awakened by his own screams, to find that during his long prayer he had fallen asleep before the shrine, and that all his extraordinary and frightful adventures had been only a wild dream. He was in a cold perspiration with fright, and utterly bewildered. Suddenly a bright light came towards him, and in the light stood a messenger. The messenger held a book in his hand, and spoke to Sentaro:

Author: Mary C. Legg
Published on: May 16, 2005 Within the collection are two favorite stories, The Tongue-cut Sparrow and The Man Who Made Withered Trees to Flower, reflecting the respect given to nature in eastern cultures. In both these stories, the environment is not merely a backdrop and the animals not merely props, but essential to imparting the message of the stories to differentiate good from evil. In western thought, environment and animals are generally implements of exploitation for man to further his own interests. A sheep is for shearing so that the wool will be combed and spun into tangible reward. Even when animals are used symbolically, they usually represent stereotyped virtues and vices: pig represents greed; snake, lethal evil; sheep, aimless brainlessness and so on. Even within Aesop's Fables, the animals have been given particular character traits and cast as types of human behavior: fox as cunning, dog as loyal, frogs as fatuous vanity, asses as imbecilic drudges. What kind of person kills a neighbor's pet? What kind of person throw a small dog into thye center of a California highway at the height of rush hour in a fit of "road rage"? The helplessness of the dog and its horrific slaughter in front of its owner reveals a gaping pit of inhumanity within the attacker's heart. What kind of society raises its beef on inhumane feedlots, stuffing cattle with corn which is unnatural for their digestive system, and shooting them full of drugs? The waste resulting from contaminated meat in slaughterhouses could proably feed all the hungry in the unfed, malnourished, unwanted impoverished world.
