The reason for such distinctions is that countless artists, composers, philosophers, politicians, writers, scientists and sports figures are known by their last name (e.g. Mozart Shakespeare Hitler , etc.). It is quite common and regular for last names to be used to identify historic and pop culture figures. It is another thing all together to be known uniquely within the criteria listed above. Dessar (1847-1924) is something of a mystery; I’ve been unable to find any information about him apart from his birth and death dates. Cahina (or, alternatively, “Kahena” or “Kahina”) was a real person, a Queen of the Berbers in the 7th and 8th Century C.E. who fought against the Muslim invasion. Gibbons wrote about her in Volume 2, Chapter 514 of his The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (you can read it online if you like). Dessar was struck by Gibbons’ paragraph: “the meager account of this beautiful Prophetess-Queen of the Berbers was inspiring, yet irritating: it suggested so much, yet told so little.” From this Dessar spun out a very entertaining historical fantasy. A Royal Enchantress I came to A Royal Enchantress after reading Cooper, which as you might imagine meant that I was all a-tingle with delight. (You have no idea how much I loathed Last of the Mohicans . Not even my entry on Hawkeye can aptly describe my hatred for that book). But the appropriate comparison for

    Romantic novel
The Romantic period saw the first flowering of the English novel. The Romantic and the Gothic novel are closely related; both imagined almost-supernatural forces operating in nature or directing human fate. Just as William Wordsworth and other poets were integral to the growth of English Romanticism, so Mary Shelley, and Ann Radcliffe were key to the sudden popularity of the Gothic novel. In this fragment our poet reveals himself as an incurable Anglophobe. Note well the many inferences :
  • Four as a mystic number has had, in the superstitious lore of many countries, a sinister or unlucky quality. I point out two instances in literature to bear out this premis. "The Sign of the Four," Arthur Conan Doyle, 1889. And the interesting fact that Dumas titled his novel about Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan, "The Three Musketeers." Sheer superstition. In this case, however, it is obvious that the reader is warned against the four major divisions of Britain, i.e., England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales. Guttaperchaphobia. A morbid dislike for cleaning fish. (Rich. Holland, Univ. of Chi., 1945.) A barbed comment on British culinary practices. A seaport, 76 miles E.S.E. of London, famed as one of the Cinque-Ports, pop. 39,950 (1938). This, the usual port of entry from France, is also noted for its soft chalk-white cliffs.
