DOUGLAS/ [pict. ornament] / TORONTO/THE MUSSON BOOK CO., LIMITED/1906/ Half-title. Amanda M. Douglas was an American writer chiefly noted for her 'Kathie' series and for her 'Little girl' series published in 10 volumes from 1897 to 1909. (Allibone Supp). A little girl in old Quebec is her only book with a Canadian setting. It is a highly romantic tale of Quebec City in the days of Champlain. The history is combined with the unusual story of a fey child who finally succumbs to love and marriage. There are interesting comments on the lot of women (both native and non-native), and religion. 470 DUNCAN, Norman, 1871-1916. WORLD OF THE CHILD
Stories: After 1850
The second half of the nineteenth century was the golden age of children's literature in England and the United States. Great writers teamed with great illustrators to produce the books we still consider classics. The industrial revolution led to advances in printing which made books colorful, affordable, and plentiful. The growing middle class, with its increased interest in education, expanded the audience for children's books. Pictures and Stories from Uncle Tom's Cabin Uncle Tom's Cabin , one of the most influencial books of nineteenth-century America, was first published in book form in 1852. Within a year, simplified editions for children appeared in both the United States and England. In this retelling, portions of the story are in verse. An introduction states: "this little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe's touching narrative to the understandings of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged Negro race of America." Thomas Hughes, 1822-1896.

THE RIGGS FAMILY This page contains a text version of my family tree. It also contains links to images that have been reduced in quality for the website. If you want any of the files you see here, contact me at ryan@dimmicks.com and I will send them to you. Also, please contact me if you have any info about any of the people in this tree. I'm sure there are typos as well as info that is just incorrect. Please forgive this but don't ignore it, contact me so that I can correct it. The Origin Of The Family From The Riggs Family by John Beverley Riggs: An examination of various British records reveals that that the name Riggs is traceable to the 13th century. Apparently the surname Riggs, originated from a place of residence. The Oldest form of the name was probably RIDGE. Those people dwelling on the ridge or XXXX took their name from their abode "at the ridge". The name while (either common or uncommon) in many of England's counties became very common in northern England. In the border counties and in Westmoreland, Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is a familiar surname even today. In Scotland, there were numerous families bearing the name.

    INTRODUCTION
to top This Bibliography was born out of the belief of the Friends of Casco Bay and the Casco Bay Estuary Project that one of the most effective ways to en courage public stewardship of Casco Bay is by increasing the public's knowledge of all aspects of the Bay. We see it as a tool to help people who are interested in the Bay to learn more about it. It is intended to be a point of entry rather than an exhaustive compilation - many old and technical references have been omitted. Our hope is that the Bibliography for Casco Bay will be used by the in formed general reader who wishes to increase his or her awareness of the chara cteristics of Casco Bay and the issues facing it and is willing to deal with material of some technical difficulty.
