Medicine: William Osler
Miles Seeley comments:
For many years I shared your near-reverence of doctors. Then I became closely associated with many of them at Menninger and through managed care, and the veils of illusion were peeled away. A great many of the doctors of today do not match up to those, Like Osler, you admire. Too many, in my view, have become narrowly-focused specialists with little concern for the whole patient; and the greed of many of them is quite evident.
My comment: I agree. Likewise, humanists used to be humanists, interested in people and enjoying the exchange of ideas. Now they are hell-bent on becoming the leading specialist in a narrow field and in beating out the competition.
Now the same has happened to medicine. The generalist who is interested in the whole patient, indeed the patient, is not viewed as being on the cutting edge of science. At Stanford the financial mess at the hospital resulted in the firing of hundreds of devoted workers. I was shocked that some medicine faculty showed no sympathy for them. Ronald Hilton - 2/6/00

Biographical Sketch
Edith Newbold Jones Wharton was born on January 24, 1862 into a distinguished New York family. Wharton was privately educated and began at an early age to write, a habit viewed by her family as unsuitable for a woman of her social class and as an eccentricity best ignored and left undiscussed. "Why, Sir William, You Don't Look a Day Over 140!"
There are Osler clubs, Osler societies, at least one Osler Library, and countless tributes to Osler. Medical students still hear the name murmured in class, and doctors may drop the name at professional meetings, but at the sesquicentennial of Sir William Osler's birth, it is his legacy as a teacher that lives on. Born one of nine children in Bond Head, Canada West, Osler's interest in nature, science, and studying things under the microscope led him to study at the Toronto School of Medicine and, later, McGill University, where he earned his medical degree in 1872. Osler traveled to Europe to do postgraduate work, but he returned to Canada to accept a teaching position at McGill. Osler earned his reputation as a doctor, researcher, and teacher. When he came to America, he first taught at the University of Pennsylvania, later becoming the first head of medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine. There, he helped pioneer practical education as part of the medical student curriculum by implementing a clinical clerkship, which revolutionized medical education. Students began learning at the bedside of patients, as well as in the classroom. Osler taught through his writings as well. His 1892 book

Sir William Osler's "A Way of Life" by Margaret O'Leary, MD FAAEM Editors: Shigeaki Hinohara, M.D., and Hisae Niki, M.A.
Duke University Press 2001 (378 pp) What a rare and timely book this is! It provides a glimpse into the inner thought processes of Sir William Osler (1849-1919) during his long and distinguished career as a physician clinician and professor at McGill University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Johns Hopkins University, and finally, as the Regius Chair in Medicine at Oxford University. Osler wrote 1,158 medical publications, and 182 literary papers and essays in his lifetime, including his famous medical text, The Principles and Practice of Medicine . Osler, born in Ontario, Canada, was the youngest son of Reverend Featherstone Lake Osler and Ellen Free's eight children. Osler first determined to be a clergyman, but later abandoned the idea to become a physician. The interweaving in his life of religion and science are exemplified in the titles of the twenty essays presented in the book, e.g., "A Way of Life," "Aequanimitas," "The Leaven of Science," "Chauvinism in Medicine," and "Man's Redemption of Man." Osler's essays vividly describe the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries of medicine, which he helped shape-a world that has powerfully shaped our own world as emergency physicians working the dawn of the 21st century. The addresses provide powerful insights as to how the world of medicine became what it is today. Yesterday's solutions are today's problems. An understanding of our Oslerian past can help us untangle meaning in the present and set direction for the future.

Oxford University Press, 198 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10016, 1999. Phone: 800-445-9714. ISBN: 0-195-12346-8. Given the opportunity (and the excuse) to read a biography of William Osler, I jumped at the chance. Like many doctors, I had often heard Osler quoted reverentially during my training. I knew nothing about his life, vaguely imagining him as a humanist and a founder of modern clinical medicine. Reading William Osler: A Life in Medicine would allow me to find out, finally, who this man really was.
