Women in History of Scots Descent
Margaret Oliphant Oliphant, Margaret [nee Wilson] (1828-1897). Novelist. Margaret Wilson was born at Wallyford near Edinburgh, on 4 April 1828. She grew up in Glasgow and Liverpool, and in 1849 published her first novel, Passages in the Life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland. The work, with its sharp delineation of Scottish character and setting, proved extremely popular and went through three successive editions. Margaret Wilson followed this with Caleb Field (1851) and Merkland (1851). In 1853 her novel Katie Stewart was serialized in Blackwood's Magazine, beginning a professional and personal association with the Blackwood firm and family that was to last until her death in 1897. In 1864, her daughter died, and soon after Margaret Oliphant took charge of three of her widowed brother's four children. This, plus a strain of supporting her two remaining children, took its toll on her writing. After1866 her work never achieved the same critical success of her earlier efforts. By the time of her death, Margaret Oliphant had produced over 100 novels, almost 30 works of non-fiction and over articles for Blackwood's Magazine. Return to Women in History of Scots Descent Index

Contributor's Club

Columns from the Atlantic Contributor's Club 1878 - 1879 that may be by Sarah Orne Jewett
A Game of Authorship
Richard Cary in "Some Bibliographic Ghosts of Sarah Orne Jewett" ( Colby Quarterly 8, September 1968, pp. 139-145) says that Jewett appeared rather frequently in "The Contributors' Club." He lists 11 columns from 1878 to 1884 that he is convinced for various reasons are by Jewett. He suggests that several more may have appeared in 1892-3. He does not list Jewett's piece on the funeral of Phillips Brooks, because it was previously listed in Weber and Weber, A Bibliography of the Published Writings of Sarah Orne Jewett (1949). I have looked through these years and have selected a few more that seem at least likely to be by Jewett. However, to my knowledge, we have solid verification of authorship for only a very few pieces. This part of the Jewett Text Project, therefore, offers us a kind of game. What internal and external evidence can be gathered to establish that Jewett was or was not the author of any of these pieces? Cary's opinions and some other possibly relevant facts appear in the notes. Reader comments are welcome. Those I receive will be linked to the appropriate pieces. Send them communications to the site manager.

Novelist
Margaret Oliphant, 1828-1897, an extremely prolific writer, produced several novels and stories that place her in the front rank of Victorian fiction. Born at Wallyford, East Lothian, she grew up mainly in Glasgow and Liverpool. She was an avid reader and began to write at an early age, publishing her first novel, Passages in the life of Margaret Maitland, in 1849. Thereafter, for the best part of half a century, she produced fiction, biography, travel books and articles on a vast range of topics.
Although she lived only for short periods in Scotland, many of her novels have Scottish themes, both historical and contemporaneous. Among her earlier Scottish novels is Katie Stewart, a true story (1853), set in 1745 and drawing on her own family background. A later Scottish novel, Effie Ogilvie (1886), explores the difficulties of a young woman longing to be more than a merely decorative wife.
After the death of her husband in 1859, Oliphant relied on her writing to support her family. She had to take on journalistic work and wrote frequently for Blackwood's magazine. She felt that the pressure to write for money denied her the opportunity to produce first-rate work, but nevertheless she had a "powerful impulse towards excellence", a phrase she uses of one of her own characters, which led to some impressive fiction. After decades of neglect, her achievement is now beginning to be recognised.
