52. Religion
All altars, some people, have crumbled under our eyes ; only one stay, eternal, that on which praise our supreme idol ourselves. Okakura Kakuzo (18621913)
http://mokona.land.free.fr/religion2.htm
RELIGION
There exists two main religions in Japan, Shintô and Buddhism. Most of the Japanese practices both of the two religions because they are not in opposition. There is also a little part of Japanese people that pratice Christianity.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A BUDDHIST TEMPLE AND A SHRINE (shintô sanctuary) Well, to the entry of shrine, you have, in general, the Torii (portico in woods). The legend tells that the cock of the village has to perch there to call Amaterasu, the goddess of the Sun. If you see a plaited straw cord above the door of entry, be sure, it is a Shintô shrine.
SHINTO (voice of gods) It is the most ancient religion, it is based on the cult of Kamis (gods), linked to the nature (centenary trees, mountains, rocks) and also often on ancient hero of the history (as our holy Christians). Before to come into the Temple, you have to purify yourself with water. This custom exists also for the Bouddhist religion. One take water with a big spoon and you wash your hands, your feet and even your mouth if you want. When you arrive to the entry of the sanctuary, you must ring the bell or claps several times in your hands to attract the attention of the

From the relationships I have found in all the tones there must result a living harmony of colors, a harmony analogous to that of a music composition."
from "Notes of a Painter," published in La Grande Revue, 1908 This page contains various links, essays, tidbits, and printable PDFs for your educational purposes. Some of it has to do with various modes of my livelihood and hints of how and why I do what I do. There is a section on Philip Whalen with essays, links, and a poem. ART "There is an entrenched institutional framework we tend to take for granted in our culture, without realizing how subtly and lethally it influences and determines our lives. Within this framework, art has been defined as static objects existing mostly in museums and galleries, segregated from ordinary life and action. The values of the “art world” tend to reflect the values of the culture at large: product orientation, individual competitiveness, winners and losers in the success game, and value-free aesthetics (or “art-for-art’s sake”). "Within this framework, art is not viewed as a potentially supportive tool that can actually help others to improve their lives. By and large, since our culture still operates from the model of the artist as a lone genius with a disembodied eye, issues of social responsibility and concern for the health of the global environment have not been a significant part of the story we have been telling ourselves about how we should function in the world as artists.

Japan, all periods, Bibliography
Be sure and check The Cultural Atlas of Japan as an opener. Much of the current ninja stuff from the likes of Paladin Press is a fantasy cult unto itself, but if you want to write a novel set in their world, then we bet you already have a lot of their books. The Charles E. Tuttle Company of Rutledge, Vermont, publishes a tremendous number of Japanese works in translation and scholarly English-language work: a copy of their catalog is a bibliography in itself. Also recommended are the Japan Travel Bureau Books sponsored by the Japanese government. We could not locate but one good book on costume, and that slim, but perhaps we haven't tried hard enough because we lazily just check in with Kabuki Hawai'i or the Honolulu Academy of the Arts when we have a question. See the monograph in this section. However, there is a new one out that is pretty good. Search for Books at
