Charles A. Eastman
said —
“My effort was to make the Indian feel that Christianity is not at fault for the whiteman’s sins, but rather the lack of it, and I freely admitted that this nation is not Christian, but declared that the Christians in it are trying to make it so. I found the facts and the logic of them often hard to dispute, but was partly consoled by the wonderful opportunity to come into close contact with the racial mind, and to refresh my understanding of the philosophy in which I had been trained, but which had been overlaid and superseded by a college education.
I do not know how much good I accomplished, but I did my best.”
Ohiyesa was born near Redwood Falls, Minnesota in 1858, the son of Face of Many Lightnings and Mary Nancy Eastman, whose father was Seth Eastman, a captain in the military stationed at Fort Snelling and mother was Stands Sacred, daughter of Cloud Man, who was a leader of the Mde Wakanton band of the eastern Sioux (Dakota).

I live on Edgcumbe Road in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul. It's about a 15-minute walk from my house across a bridge over the Mississippi River to land that was part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The land is a bluff. On top of the bluff is Historic Fort Snelling. Fort Snelling sits at the confluence of two great rivers: the Mississippi and the Minnesota. Both are descendants of the ancient River Warren, the furious torrent that drained the vastness of glacial Lake Agassiz. Both rivers have shaped Minnesota's history. But it is the Mississippi that captures the imagination of a nation. Of all the metaphors that serve to give poetic life to that great river, perhaps those from biology are the most common. Writer and humorist Garrison Keillor, in William Harvey-like fashion, calls the Mississippi the "artery of a continent, lifeblood of a country."

Charles Eastman was born in 1858 on the Santee Reservation near Redwood Falls, Minnesota and died in 1939. He earned a M.D. degree at Boston University, 1890, and a month after graduating from medical school treated the injuries of survivors of Wounded Knee. He was a strong advocate for Native American causes and worked to set up YMCA units for Indians across the country. He spent much of his life trying to reconcile the opposing values and beliefs of white society and Sioux culture.

It was our belief that the love of possessions is a weakness to be overcome. Its appeal is to the material part, and if allowed its way, it will in time disturb one's spiritual balance. Therefore, children must early learn the beauty of generosity. They are taught to give what they prize most, that they may taste the happiness of giving. If a child is inclined to be grasping, or to cling to any of his or her little possessions, legends are related about contempt and disgrace falling upon the ungenerous and mean person ... The Indians in theor simplicity literally give away all that they have - to relatives, to guests of other tribes or clans, but above all to the poor and the aged, from whom they can hope for no return. Charles Alexander Eastman (Ohiyesa) Back to Wisdom The Indians were religious from the first moments of life. From the moment of the mother's recognition that she had conceived to the end of the child's second year of life, which was the ordinary duration of lactation, it was supposed by us that the mother's spiritual influence was supremely important.

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. A Santee Sioux, physician, government agent, and spokesperson for Indian rights, Charles Alexander Eastman was also the first well-known, widely read Native American author. A fully acculturated Indian, Eastman worked to create understanding between Native Americans and Euro-Americans and sometimes found himself in the conflicted position of being caught between the two cultures. His writing resonates with his efforts both to make Indian traditions accessible to a white audience and to define his own identity as an Indian and as an American.
Eastman was separated from his parents at an early age when their tribe fled to Canada after the ill-fated Minnesota Dakota conflict. His father, Many Lightnings, was presumed dead so Eastman was given a traditional Sioux upbringing by his uncle and his grandmother. In 1869, however, Eastman found out that his father was not dead but had in fact changed his name to Jacob Eastman, adopted Euro-American customs, and converted to Christianity. Changing his son's name from Ohiyesa to Charles Alexander, Jacob Eastman took the boy from the Sioux community in Canada and raised him on a farm in South Dakota. With his father's encouragement, Eastman received a Euro-American education and eventually earned a degree from Dartmouth and an M.D. from Boston University.

    My Playmates
HATANNA was the brother with whom I passed much of my early childhood. From the time that I was old enough to play with boys, this brother was my close companion. He was a handsome boy, and an affectionate comrade. We played together, slept together and ate together; and as Chatanna was three years the older, I naturally looked up to him as to a superior. Oesedah was a beautiful little character. She was my cousin, and four years younger than myself. Perhaps none of my early playmates are more vividly remembered than is this little maiden. The name given her by a noted medicine-man was Makah-oesetopah-win. It means The-four-corners-of-the-earth. As she was rather small, the abbreviation with a diminutive termination was considered more appropriate, hence Oesedah became her common name. Although she had a very good mother, Uncheedah was her efficient teacher and chaperon Such knowledge as my grandmother deemed suitable to a maiden was duly impressed upon her susceptible mind. When I was not in the woods with Chatanna, Oesedah was my companion at home; and when I returned from my play at evening, she would have a hundred questions ready for me to answer. Some of these were questions concerning our every-day life, and others were more difficult problems which had suddenly dawned upon her active little mind. Whatever had occurred to interest her during the day was immediately repeated for my benefit.

    ~ OHIYESA ~
    ~ Dr. Charles A. Eastman ~
    ~ Santee Sioux ~
Ohiyesa was born near Redwood Falls, Minnesota. His father was a full-blooded Sioux, his mother the daughter of an army officer and the grand-daughter of a famous Sioux chief. As a boy Ohiyesa lived still the free nomadic life of the Sioux. He later took up the ways of the white man and went to college. He graduated from Dartmouth College, N.H., in 1887, and studied medicine at Boston University. Ohiyesa wrote the following biographies from actual interviews with the chieftains themselves, or with those who were eyewitness to the events.
