  • [PDF] Binding in Memory, Oxford: Oxford University Press.
    Abstract:
An account of the neurological mechanisms that underlie binding is given which is characterized by the decomposition of the binding problem into three distinct subproblems. Each subproblem is then supported by anatomically specialized brain regions. The posterior cortex employs coarse-coded distributed representations of low-order conjunctions to resolve binding ambiguities, while also supporting systematic generalization to novel stimuli and situations. These representations are slowly acquired over experience. The hippocampus can more rapidly bind higher-order conjunctions of information such as episodes or locations. Finally, the prefrontal cortex supports transient, actively maintained bindings that are used in the service of working memory. We argue that this approach to the binding problem compares favorably with those based on temporal synchrony binding.

E-Mail: michael_oreilly@urmc.rochester.edu DNA Damage Signaling in Oxidative Lung Injury We want to know how pulmonary cells respond to oxidative damage caused by prolonged exposure to high oxygen used to treat patients with respiratory distress. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed during aerobic respiration oxidize and fragment mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Such damage can occur when lungs are exposed to elevated oxygen (hyperoxia) or by the chronic exposure to oxygen over a lifetime. In order to prevent abnormal lung development or remodeling, it is essential that damaged DNA be recognized and repaired or terminally injured cells be efficiently removed and replaced. The observation that type II epithelial cells of the lung are more tolerant to hyperoxia than endothelial cells suggests that individual cells of the lung may respond differently to oxidative damage. Our studies with transgenic mice and cell lines have shown that the tumor suppressor p53 is a critical regulator of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 during hyperoxia. We also found hyperoxia inhibits cell division, in part through production of p21 and that p21 protects cells against oxidant injury. Given the importance of p53 to orchestrate cell survival and death pathways, current studies are addressing how the ataxia telangiectasia mutant (ATM) and its related family members ATR or DNA-PK signal the damage response to p53/21 and how p21 protects cells against oxidative stress. By understanding how different cell types respond to hyperoxia, we hope to develop new therapies to mitigate oxygen-induced lung injury, oxidative damage caused by the aging process, and even oxidative damage caused by chronic inflammation or environmental pollutants.

O'Reilly: Do You Care What Happens To Karl Rove?
There was no coverage of the emerging Karl Rove scandal last night on O'Reilly Factor. Rove was not mentioned until the final moments of the show when O'Reilly announced his audience poll question
"Do you care what happens to Karl Rove?" comment: Bill O'Reilly has said that nobody really cares about the Karl Rove story and he threw out the question last night in a dismissive way as if he couldn't care less. Well, I care very much about what happens to Karl Rove. He needs to be sacked by the President and charged immediately. This is one Bush Administration scandal we can't ignore. How would you answer Bill O'Reilly's question? Reported by deborah at July 22, 2005 11:06 AM

Behind JEMBlazer: Java on the GameBoy Advance
by Howard Wen JEMBlazer is basically Java on a cartridge. Specifically, "JEMBlazer" is a brand name for a family line of cartridges that add Java capabilities to various devices. This family uses the JEM Java processor hardware technology developed by aJile Systems, the company also behind the JEMBlazer. The first released JEMBlazer product is the JFlame, a devkit that allows Java apps to be developed for, or ported to, the GameBoy Advance. The JFlame development kit sells for $199, the cartridge itself for much less. Mike Masters and Kurt Mahan are the principal hardware and software engineers of the JEMBlazer JFlame.

Sunday, September 11, 2005 Comment InfoLinks Networking Forum ... Contributors Billy O'Reilly has finally lost it!!! Posted by Luke I don't mean to harp on Fox News, because most of the time I prefer to sit back and laugh at them, but this time 'the Factor' has crossed the line from being a conservative idiot, to being a crazy conservative idiot. In Friday's addition of his Talking Points segment, O'Reilly went after Harvard University. And though I don't see eye-to-eye with the main thrust of his speech, there was one line in particular that just made me freeze. Here is the passage in question: This revenge of the gay lobby is hurting the country which is in the middle of World War III as we all know. I'm not sure if this was rhetoric or he actually believes it, but if the latter O'Reilly has truly lost it. And yet there are people out there, a lot of people, that takes what he says as gospel.

Susan Clampitt, who had directed the station since June 2000, had come under fire from current and former staff members, donors and volunteers. They questioned her financial management of the station and her managerial style, which had led to widespread staff disgruntlement." WAMU ran through more than $4 million in cash reserves in the process in the past three years as spending jumped 110 percent from 2000 to 2002. Washington Post Thursday, October 30, 2003 A Record Year At The Movie Box Office Movie fans spent $20.4 billion on movie tickets last year - a record amount. "The average ticket in the UK cost $6.45 (£4.29) in 2002, compared with $5.81 in the US. Film fans in Russia have had to stomach a 138% rise over the past two years, rising to $1.72 in 2002. But the cheapest cinema tickets were in Romania (39 cents) and India, where each ticket cost 21 cents." BBC Wednesday, October 29, 2003
