Code Fragments only Editor's note: In part one in a two-part series of excerpts from Chapter 17 of WebLogic: The Definitive Guide , authors Avinash Chugh and Jon Mountjoy examine WebLogic's various security mechanisms, beginning with a look at the Java Security Manager and how WebLogic filters connection requests. They also cover WebLogic's authentication and authorization framework and how it supports the standard J2EE security services. WebLogic provides a comprehensive suite of security services that can be used to protect all aspects of a domain and its deployments. These security services affect all aspects of your domain: from the lowest level provided by the Java Security Manager, to connection-level security, to application-level security in which you can protect your administered and deployed objects (such as EJBs, web services, and JDBC pools), and finally to domain-level security in which you can establish trust between two domains. These security services target three distinct sets of users: application developers who can use the services to secure their applications; administrators who need to configure security for the system and deployments; and security vendors or customers who can change and extend the facilities provided by WebLogic.

Multiple ResultSets in ADO.NET
by Srinivasa Sivakumar
Introduction
Most Web Forms applications need to load multiple pieces of data, usually to load up comboboxes or listboxes. Many times we end up querying the database again and again for different lookup table data, and this reduces scalability and adds more stress to the backend database. With my current ASP.NET application, I faced this challenge. I had to fill about three comboboxes from a SQL Server 2000 database. Initially, I created SqlConnection and SqlCommand objects and I reused them with different SqlDataReader objects to fill the dropdown boxes. But it was a tedious task, since I had to re-execute different queries against the same data source again and again to get the lookup data. Then I figured out that I could get all the results from multiple queries in a single roundtrip to the database. By using batch queries and multiple ResultSets in ADO.NET, I could increase the scalability of my application and improve my user's experience by simply being faster.

A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW During a recent panel discussion on media bias at Book Expo America 2003, Al Franken called Bill O'Reilly on his lies –- and O'Reilly didn't take to it so kindly. The heated exchange, which was covered by C-SPAN's Book TV , became the subject of media coverage around the nation [ LINK ]. BuzzFlash interviewed Franken about his first round KO against O'Reilly and about the larger issue of the media's right-wing bias, which Franken covers in his new book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right . (It is scheduled for release in the fall. Check back with BuzzFlash later this summer for more details). Franken is one of BuzzFlash's heroes. Author of the must-read
