Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953), America's one great playwright by world acclaim, has not always enjoyed popularity. At the moment, though, he is in the ascendant. ...In the dark American tradition of Melville, Poe, and Faulkner, O'Neill also infused into his work the pathologies that dominated his own life... ...and Days Without End... ...The Modern Library has reissued its 1932 "Giant" edition of nine of his plays... ...Although he was charmed by his daughter Oona's beauty and intelligence during her teen years, he rebuffed her contemptuously when she sought a Hollywood career, and rejected her fiercely and permanently when she married Charlie Chaplin... ...What enabled him to control his own alcoholism and to continue productive work through long periods of debilitating illness and a turbulent domestic life were an iron will and vast ambition... ...His older son, Eugene, Jr., a classical scholar at Yale, committed suicide... ...Lionel Trilling, another critic who praised O'Neill while trying not to bury him, put it this way: We do not read Sophocles or Aeschylus for the right answer...

One of the greatest American playwrights of the twentieth century, a restless and bold experimenter, and the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1936. Among O'Neill's best-known plays are ANNA CHRISTINE (pub. 1922), DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS (pub.1924), MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA (pub. 1931), LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT (pub. 1956), and THE ICEMAN COMETH (prod. 1946). O'Neill's plays range in style from satire to tragedy. They often depict people who have no hope of controlling their destinies. "... We all are more or less the slaves of conventions, or of discipline, or of a rigid formula of some sort." O'Neill was born in New York into a theatrical Irish-Catholic family. O'Neill's early life was restless: his father, who was an actor, spent most of his career touring in the lead role of the popular melodrama The Count of Monte Cristo. In 1895 O'Neill was enrolled in the St. Aloysius Academy for Boys, and transferred in 1900 to the DeLa Salle Institute in Manhattan. During these years his mother's addiction to morphine left profound emotional scars on O'Neill. After renouncing Catholicism, O'Neill entered the Betts Academy in Stamford, a non-sectarian preparatory school, in 1902. Six years later he entered Princeton University, but left after a year. During this period he spent most of the time in New York waterfront bars and brothels.

Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill
was born in a Broadway hotel room in New York City on October 16, 1888. O'Neill won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1936, and Pulitzer Prizes for four of his plays: Beyond the Horizon (1920); Anna Christie (1922); Strange Interlude (1928); and Long Day's Journey Into Night (1957). O'Neill is credited with raising American dramatic theater from its narrow origins to an art form respected around the world. He is regarded as America's premier playwright. O'Neill's father, James O'Neill, was one of 19th Century America's most popular actors. Young Eugene spent much of his early years on national tours with his father. In 1906 he entered Princeton University but was soon expelled. In 1909 he married, had a son, and was divorced within three years. By 1912, O'Neill had worked as a gold prospector in Honduras, as a seaman, and had become a regular at New York City's flophouses and cheap saloons. That year he became ill with tuberculosis, and was inspired to become a playwright while reading during his recovery. O'Neill's career as a playwright consisted of three periods. His early
